(6) Lucky In Cash, Unlucky In Multis

Monday 10th July

The problem with these diaries is they can get a little bit depressing to read. Unfortunately with tourney poker there is a lot of running bad though. That’s just the nature of the beast.

A massive 3000 runners managed to squeeze into today’s tourney including 600 or so alternates. Most of the alternates actually lasted a lot longer than me.

I won my first pot and had progressed to 1800 chip when I picked up pocket Queens. A player to my right raised to 125 and I re-raised to 400. The dealer flopped Q-4-6 two spades and I was wondering how I could possibly get paid. I need not have worried though as my opponent just moved all-in. She rolled over two Jacks and it hadn’t occurred to me how I could possibly lose this pot. Two running spades for a flush showed me how.

Down to 700, I got it in with a pair of 10s v AK and surprisingly I didn’t win the coin flip.

I later dabbled in a PLO game which helped the old bankroll a little.

Tuesday 11th July

The $2000 Pot Limit Hold 'Em is the event where I came closest to winning a bracelet 6 years ago. I faired pretty well and went quite deep. I outlasted most of the 600 field but fell around 10pm just short of the money in 70th place.

On my way out of the door I just happened to notice a huge PLO game with a few unfamiliar faces. I couldn’t stop myself sitting down with the $8,000 I had in my pocket.

I almost immediately got lucky hitting a straight flush. The fortunate bit though was that the loosest player on the table just happened to have the nut flush. He was probably the only player on the table who would have paid me off for all $7,500 I had left in front of me.

I’ve been running pretty unlucky in the tourneys but incredibly lucky in the PLO cash games.

Wednesday 12th July

Another day off! I am not sick. The $50,000 HORSE event is a long way out of my bankroll. So the day was spent helping the film crew around the mansion, buying a replacement wedding ring with Rhowena (now that’s a long story) and having a tremendous Italian meal in the evening.

Meanwhile, Marc has flown back to the UK again as his wife has finally had the baby. daughter named Jessica, and mother doing fine.

Thursday 14th July

I’ve complained about the low amount of chips that you get for WSOP events before. The structures are great, nice and long and slow. However, you just don’t get enough chips to start with. If you lose the first hand you are in trouble.

Today we were playing 6 player short handed NLH. I generally play short handed more aggressively, maybe too aggressively today.

The first hand I played was only the second of the tournament. A-7 v A-4, but unfortunately A-5-3-2-6 was not a healthy board. I was down to 1600 and raised two hands later with K-J suited. The button re-raised to 250 and I made the mistake of calling. A Jack high board suited his A-J slightly better than my K-J and I was history just 4 hands into the tourney.

So the TV crew followed me and the muppet Tony Chessa (right) down to the golf course. Just for the record, I thrashed him 4&3 and he was buying the KFC.
