I've been told never to show my cards after a hand if can be helped, but sometimes I like to rub it in players faces!

Never show your cards. Information is gold, don't give it away.
If you show a bluff, you must have a good hand the next time you bet in the same scenario, as you are probably going to get called. All of a sudden you have lost an important weapon from your armoury.
If you show your cards when you had the nuts and your opponent passed, then you are saying 'well played'. You are boosting your opponent's confidence. Keep him wondering and eventually his curiosity may get the better off him.
