WSOP 2009 Schedule

Regardless of the success of the GUKPT, EPT, LAPT or whatever tour has emerged since the poker boom, the world's oldest poker festival, the World Series of Poker, is still the most celebrated series of events on the poker calendar. As such, it was with great interest that eyes remained peeled on the Harrah's site keenly awaiting that schedule and wondering what changes would be made for the game's biggest poker extravaganza.

With Harrah's releasing their schedule earlier in the week, there were a number of notable changes to last year's line-up. Although I personally believe the biggest change is the return of the casino employees' event to the opening day on Wednesday 7th May, some have disgreed and claim that the inclusion of a $40,000 buy-in event on the following day is the most eye-opening inclusion. Sure to attract many of the game's biggest games, this no limit Hold'em freezeout has become the second largest buy-in event, behind the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E freezeout, which also returns, but the most expensive no limit event, thus surpassing, and perhaps overshadowing, the $10,000 main event.

Again, the $10,000 World Championship events are back, as are the seemingly endless stream of smaller buy-in events, not to mention the obligatory Antes Up for Africa event which will take place at the tail end of the Series on Thursday July 2nd.

However, the biggest 'non mover' is the return of the 'November Nine', in which the finalists of this year's World Series of Poker main event will enjoy a money-making four month hiatus before recommencing battle on the 7th November. Knockers questioned whether this was a profitable move when the idea was initially implemented in 2008, but its inclusion this year perhaps confirms that it was a move that Harrah's found lucrative, and one in which they are keen to stand by.

"Whether you play poker around the kitchen table or consider yourself a professional, you will find a comfortable seat at the 2009 World Series of Poker," said Jeffrey Pollack, commissioner of the World Series of Poker. "This year's schedule offers more variety than ever before and we look forward to welcoming players from around the world to the Rio for our 40th annual extravaganza this summer."
