Tournament Deals: What advice would you give to a novice or intermediate standard player about deal making?

Making deals in the local £20 comp is really bad news. This is a chance to get experience of heads up play in a real pressure situation. Don't waste it. One day you may end up playing heads up for 20 grand.

In a WSOP PLH event 5 years ago I accepted a deal where I took $138,000. The other players took $102,000 and $50,000. I was a chip leader and had been dominating the table, and was a clear winner in the tournament, but when we had chopped all the money, the pressure was off. My opponents played differently throwing their chips around and I eventually finished 2nd. The record books now show Jimmy Athanas as the bracelet winner. This is probably the biggest regret in my poker life.
