Monday 17th July

This was a very strange day. The $1500 PLO was an organisational disaster. Apparently, it was meant to be a rebuy tourney but the printers put it on the schedule as a freezout. The previous night it was changed back to a rebuy tourney and at 10am it was a rebuy. However it was then changed into 2 tourneys: a freezout at 12 and a re-buy at 4.

In what turned out to be a disastrous day where I had budgeted for $1500 but ended up spending $15,000. I completely lost it. In the rebuy I was sat to the left of Carlos Mortensen who was buying in at $3000 a time and playing every single pot. In total he spent $18,000 but unfortunately dragged me along with him. I should have been buying in at $1500 a time but ended up trying to match Carlo.

Eventually I ended up going out in a 30,000 pot where I was all-in on the flop with trips against a flush draw. I guess I would not be whingeing if my hand had stood up and I had gone on to make the final table. However it didn’t and I am angry with myself for spending so much.

Tuesday 18th July

Filing this diary is becoming a real drag. 7 weeks is a hell of a long time in Vegas and you can guarantee that everyone will have a few low points. Hopefully I am now at my lowest ebb. The main problem with reporting on tourney poker at the highest levels is that there are always going to be 10 bad reports for the one good one. How do I make this sound interesting and now just a repetition of bad beat whinges? No answer I’m afraid.

So today was just another day at the office. Only 1500 starting chips, a board of 89J, two hole cards of AJ, an opponent holding 99 and I guess a certain amount of bad play on my part, and I am out within 2 hours.

Wednesday 19th July

Déjà vu. $2500 PLH. I got off to a good start and doubled up to a workable stack of 5500. Unfortunately after about 5 hours it all ended up in the middle with AK v 99 and the flop didn’t give me any help.

As I am now getting very close to the bottom of the bankroll, I decided I needed to work in the Satellite area. Fortunately for me I managed to win a $500 sat and claw a little money back.

Thursday 20th July

Today’s event  $5000 short handed NLH. Again I got off to a good start and doubled up too. I was determined not to make any mistakes. I’d had 8 hours sleep, and given myself a good talking to. Only ate light food and fruit and was in tip top shape.

Over 500 entrants whittled their way down until I was Johnny low stack again. I lost a chunk with a pair of Jacks when a King hit the board. Another chunk when I held AQ on a Queen high board to my opponents AA and finally made a mistake moving in with 99 only to find an opponent with QQ.

They paid 54 and I went out around 70th within sight of the money but it was another wasted day of hard graft.

I am now officially in trouble.

Friday 21st July

Today’s event  $2000 NLH.  Something spooky happened today. During the first level I picked up JQ of hearts in the blinds and called a small raise. The flop showed a A10 of hearts and I called another small bet. (Yes I guess this may sound like loose play).. Anyway, the King of hearts appeared in the turn and I nearly fell of the chair.

My opponent had also made a small flush and I knocked him out. The rest of the table was questioning me and commenting. I replied that I think the last time I hit a Royal Flush was about 3 years ago in The Gutshot Club knocking out Roland De Wolfe… and what should happen 5 minutes later?…Roland De Wolfe gets moved into the empty seat. Spooky Man.

Anyway having got off to a good start, normal service was resumed later on. I crashed out just before dinner. I had also had Aces and Kings in the first level, so inside I suspected that I had held too many big hands too early. As expected I endured a 3 hour dry spell where I hardly picked up an Ace or a pair and didn’t get a sniff of a steal opportunity. Eventually I was back down to 2400 chips and everyone passed around to my SB. I moved in with A7 trying to pick up the 1000 in the middle. The BB called with 44 and I was walking again.
