It's the same as a burn not necassarily having anything to do with heat - a burn is caused by a violent change in temperature which can be hot or cold.

Yesterday, on my way home from Newark, I called in to see an old horseman friend of mine. I turned off the A46 on to a B road and I followed that for a couple of miles before turning on to a single track road. Eventually, I left the single track road and followed a muddy lane to a clearing in a spinney and parked my car outside of a tiny cabin/bungalow that was almost completely hidden by the flora.

You would never be allowed to build or live in one like it these days, but 50 or 60 years ago, in a place as remote as this, it was a different story.

Although he's now the wrong side of 80, he still manages to tend half a dozen head of "easy uns" that he keeps on a few acres of rough land. He pays a pittance in rent for his grazing, but then he has been friends with the landowner for longer than almost everyone else in the world has been alive.

His given name is Arthur, but everyone calls him Captain on account of an injury he sustained when a horse kicked him, shattering his elbow and...

NOOOOO GODDAMMIT!
I'm doing it again. Turning a simple post into a long rambling blather.

Right! Here's the stripped down version.

Went to see a horseman friend. He's old, illiterate and a bit cut off from the world but he has a sharp mind and he doesn't lie.

He told me about something he had just heard on the radio. (He doesn't do TV)

"Yu knows what I just heard on d wylus?"

"No Cap, what did you hear?"

"Dey said years and years ago  dey wus dees osses.."

Apparently, according to Captain's interpretation, there was once a herd of wild horses living somewhere so remote that it took several months to trek to where they were.

Specimens from this herd were highly prized, but they were so wild that it was virtually impossible to catch them and bring them home without them dying en route.

"So, dey takes a load of mares what's in foal and goes to where all d wild osses is, then dey waits till d foals is born and dey kills dem and skins dem. Now dey kills some wild mares, takes der foals and puts d dead foals skins on dem so dat d tame mares will feed em, and dey drives them all back home".

I've been around horses and horsemen all my life. I've read reams of stuff on the subject, watched documentaries etc and I've never heard about this.

I tried to find something on Google but had no luck.

Captain says the horses were named after something to do with tar and there were also some camels...

Wow! That looks good. I'll have a listen now.

(Perhaps I should have searched for the radio programme rather than the horse)

Lovely story, beautifully written, Tom.

More rambling blather please.

I have to stop the blather Tone.

The crux of my stories is usually far to mundane to support a waffling preamble.

'Get in, do it, get out'. That's going to be my motto from now on. (I hope the SAS don't try to pinch it)

PS- Does anyone know the plural of crux, and should it be 'crux is' as above or 'crux are' as not above?

Mr Tal, Science Wife, Tighty, anyone?

TIA.

Yours in brevity and anticipation,
Tom.

Disagree, Tom, it's the little details that give the story real colour. I drive down that muddy lane with you, I really did.

PS plural of crux is, rather oddly, cruces.

An accurate answer and a lesson in brevity all in one short post.

I went off to google cruces but accidentally typed crucis, now that's a whole nother can of wiki worms.

Swirly thing alert!

The weather has gone batshit crazy here. It's blowing a gale, the wind is filled with polystyrene snow and it changes direction every 3 seconds.
