That's the whole bark - if you leave the inner bit then it won't kill it; because that would leave the xylem and phloem unaffected. If the outer bark had some kind of disease it could be removed to keep it safe. She approves of the picture except that's not a correct science lab coat #shame

I was thinking today about cavemen and what a great invention the wheel was, but then I thought, hang on, the wheel kind of invented itself.
There has always been round things that other things could roll on, bits of log, round stones etc. Put something heavy on something round, even if it's only by accident, (like putting your foot on some pebbles) and they will roll with the weight.
So the wheel... Meh!
But the axle. Now that was an invention. With an axle your wheels moved with the load rather than being left behind every time you moved it. Brilliant!
The next time someone mentions inventing the wheel I'm going to tell him to fuck off.
