Title: Pick me an outsider..FA Cup special
Post by: TightEnd on January 27, 2008, 08:23:05 PM
6 Premiership teams are left

best odds are:

http://www.oddschecker.com/football/english/fa-cup/win-market/best-odds/

Obviously we hope for a couple of the Prem teams to draw each other tomorrow lunchtime for this to have "legs" but...

each way 1/4 odds to hit the final

and remembering Millwall and Southampton have hit FA Cup finals in the last ten years

there must be e/w value outside the top 4

I wonder about West Brom at 50-1

more realistically both portsmouth at 14s and boro at 28s appeal

what do you think, for a sporting punt, before the draw for real fingers crossed appeal?!

borough have signed ALves (is my understanding) This guy is something else and will give them the goals they need...but i hate Southgate so would go with WBA@50-1 instead. The draw would really need to favour you though...the only premierleague side they are guarantueed to beat is Liverpool :)

yes it relies on a favourable draw, but odds are they avoid the big four in the 5th..and if we get say two of arse/chel/man u and liverpool drawn together.....odds will tumble I suspect before the 6th round

as I say, a sporting punt rather than a major sensible bet!

Pompy have just signed Milan Baros - quality signing.   Part of me would like to see Pompy do well should Arsenal faulter

Hmmm this is so much the luck of the draw and your outsider not drawing one of the big 4.

What about Cardiff @ 200/1, a sod of place to go and play. A few home ties and we might be laughing.

yep, the crowd is very hostile down there, with an old fashioned ground . Relies on a home draw or two methinks...

whereas a WBA could go to almost all remaining non Prem sides and be favourite to win

I'd never back my own team but to me the value look to be Wolves,Coventry or Sheff Utd who have all had bad patches but on their day are capable of beating most teams (and all had good results this weekend).

Draw allowing I can easily see 1 of the 3 in the semi's (and at odds of 100 or more they look good to me).

If you are laying the bets off again after the next round..I would say WBA look great value.

Boro have had so much luck in the draws for cup competitions in recent years, if they keep that up then it wouldn't suprise me to see them there or thereabouts.

It'll be interesting to see if they can get the work permit for Alves through in time.

should be through soon enough, no? He really is something else..I have watched him play many a time and Ronaldo and Romario also started off their European careeer in the Dutch league (with PSV)..i am surprised a bigger club than Middlesborough didn't go after him. (then again..the guy is a massive pain in the arse if he doesn't get things his own way)

At one time you used to of had to of played in 75% of the games for your country in the last two years or something. With him having 8 caps I don't think he will have. Having said that there are loads of cases where they have been given without meeting the requirements, so I don't see that being as much of a problem as them only having four days to get it through a government department. I saw a report last week that they were thinking the application would have to be in by last friday for it to get through in time.

not a great basis for a bet though. that's much the same as betting on red because the last few spins have come in red

I'd be looking at WBA as the best value e/w and Cardiff as a long shot. Cardiff are on a real hot streak and over the last 2 seasons have been superb on their day, just lacking consistency

Tantalising value at 250/1 available for the Super Reds!

Mixed feelings about the draw tomorrow.  Normally at this stage I'd think there'd be a great chance of a glamour tie but I think I'd prefer a home draw against Huddersfield or Bristol Rovers and hope to progress one round further.  Apart from the big 4, there's no 'special fixtures' left for us to aim for.

However, odds are we'll end up with the nightmare scenario - strong Championship team away, so no difference to our usual bread and butter fixtures with little chance of progression.  West Brom would be the worst case scenario for me, so its pretty much guaranteed to happen.  If it has to be that, then at least let it be Sheff Utd for a bit of local rivalry.

Of the big 4 I'd love Arsenal away for the 'new ground' factor.  I've done all the others and seen us beat every team left in the draw, with the exception of Arsenal and possibly Chelsea (although I suspect I saw us beat them in the 80s at some point).

From a betting point of view I like Portsmouth as a value bet.  If some of the big 4 get draw together then they could have a very good shot at winning it.

I think I will pass on that cheers Sheriff.

Having seen Barnsley at close hand this month vs Norwich, I would be very surprised if they are capable of causing one shock nevemind two. Of course they may have had an off day and for some reason Barnsley seem to have the perfect weaknesses for us, despite this being one of the worst Norwich teams in living memory.

Out of all the teams left, I would actually like Barnsley to do well. I wish the club no ill will at all but my head says no.

One further sticking point in the Alves deal could come from the fact that he is yet to be granted a work permit.

The initial application was automatically rejected because Alves has not played in 75 per cent of his country's games over the last two years, with the appeal to be heard on Thursday.

Do you think I would get an appeal hearing so quickly if I wanted to get a quick work permit for my Thai massage parlour workers?!!  I don't know why they even have these guides, they never really seem to count for anything. (apart from an Iraqi to man city) Yes I am jealous, yes I am worried!!

So, I have WBA, Pompey and Middlesboro left running each way (1/2 odds to make final) at prices 16/1 28/1 50/1

the draw

Barnsley
Man U
Chelsea
Bristol R
Pompey
WBA
Sheff u/Boro
Cardiff

I have 3 wishes

- that my three avoid each other
- that United get Chelsea
- that my 3 get Barnsley, Rovers and Cardiff at home

that's all! not too much to ask!!

Best odds http://www.oddschecker.com/football/english/fa-cup/win-market/best-odds/

shows Pompey have moved the most of my bets so far

Obviously the market will change once the draw is made ... are you planning to lay anything of tighty ... if so are you tempted to do it pre draw ? ... or are you just gonna let it ride.

Title: Re: Pick me an outsider..FA Cup special
Post by: TightEnd on February 18, 2008, 11:09:09 AM
Let it ride I think

If 2 of my 3 get utd/Chelsea then its hard luck, simple probabilitiy says thats odds against

if they don't I assume they shorten and I can partially lay off assuming a couple reach the semis

What a draw for Barnsley!..Congrats Sherrif.

Hmmm, last time this fixture was played (Premiership 1997) the final score was 6-0 to Chelsea (BFC fans famously started singing we're gonna win 6-5 on the Super Sunday broadcast when 5-0 down).

Home draw is good but would have preferred to avoid the big 2 clubs, given that we're only one game away from a Wembley semi-final.  Still, there's always the chance of lighting striking twice in one season....

I had a tenner on West Brom @69.

I'm undecided whether to lay off some now (say £10/£15) at 24ish,or be greedy and wait till after the next round IF they win.

If i lay some off now i will still have a decent trading position b4 the semi-final draw,so that's probably the sensible option.

Any opinions?

i

I hv wba e/w at 50s

Southampton were without a manager and aren't a team who could mix it on a bad pitch against Bristol R

Not only do I think WBA are a far better team but also they are stronger

Set against that Mowbray keeps going on about how the cup is affecting their league form so he may be tempted to throttle the intensity back a bit in the cup

On balance though this is a pretty good draw for us value seekers, I'm not closing any out

My thinking is along these lines, say the semi-finalists are Man Utd,Chelsea,Middlesbro and WBA,i would expect WBA to be about 10/1.If they then drew Man Utd or Chelsea maybe a touch higher.

I don't think WBA stand any chance of winning the thing,so i may lay some off now and the rest after they beat Bristol Rovers (hopefully)

Yet again M'boro look on to make the last 4 without playing a top flight team. Keeps my flatmate pleased. As long as they get hammered at some point I don't mind, but I could see them making the final. You just know that if they get there Man U will get Chelsea in the Semi's.

so Boro scrape through

I have a tenner e/w on Pompey at 14s, Boro at 28s and WBA at 50s..e/w 1/2the odds for making the final

current best odss

Man Utd   11/8
Chelsea   7/5
Middlesbrough   11
Portsmouth   16
West Brom   18

so I'm hopeful that I have chances with Middlesboro especially, assuming they can beat Cardiff and get away from Utd/Chelsea in the semi

Same for WBA, away at Bristol R

HOLY CRAP!!!

Just got home, still can't quite believe it.  The atmosphere in the ground was electric and the best thing was today's hero, Kayode Odejayi, has been our most maligned player this season.  Hopefully he'll get a confidence boost from today and will start to deliver more regularly.

The guy who sits behind me cried for about 5 minutes after the final whistle.  His wife had been cracking me up all match by constantly shouting 'come on Obi Wan' whenever Odejayi had the ball.

Quite simply a special day.  Anyone who doesn't think the FA Cup is something special should think again.  It may not mean much to the big clubs but for the vast majority of supporters around the country it's the one glimmer of hope we have each year for something memorable.

Wem-ber-lee is going to be a day to remember, regardless of the outcome on the day!

Time to go watch the Sky+ recording!

You lucky, lucky man..sometimes I genuinely wish I supported a smaller club (Thought PSV aren't exactly the giants of Europe lol)..I only get something like this feeling when we play in the Championsleague or UEFA cup and do well.

Pity a few of our moron fans couldn't keep quiet for a minute re Derek Dooley.  I did worry when they announced it as I knew some of our meatheads wouldn't be able to resist due to the Sheffield (both sides) connections.  I was squirming with embarrassment hoping it wasn't being picked up on TV.

I met him a few times several years back.  Great guy and a true ambassador for South Yorkshire sport.  Deserved better than tonight's 'silence'.

Barnsley FTW!!!

There isn't a club out there that doesn't want to win the FA Cup.  The big boys certainly do as well as the clubs from lower down the football league.

Great time to be a Barnsley fan, a trip to Wembley and very close to that FA Cup final.

Tantalising value at 250/1 available for the Super Reds!

I wish the club no ill will at all but my head says no.

my bet is 1/2 the odds for the final

I have Pompey and WBA running at e/w..so part of me hopes they draw each other and I guarantee a return rather than risking both going out in the semis

but a Barnsley v cardiff final??/ surely not!!

There is talk on the Barnsley forum that playing Cardiff in the final would guarantee us a UEFA Cup spot win or lose due to some rule about a Welsh club not being allowed to represent England in Europe.  Treating it with a pinch of salt for now.  If true, I suppose I'd like to avoid them in the semis but there's also the not too trivial matter of actually reaching the final to think about first.

We've beaten and lost to West Brom this season, and drew at home to Cardiff with an away fixture still to come.  West Brom would present us with another issue as our stand-in keeper, Luke Steele, is on loan from them and thus would not be allowed to play against them.

I think I'd prefer either of these to Portsmouth though, although we do seem to up our game considerably for the 'big' fixtures (although how can any FA Cup semi not be a big fixture?).  There's no easy fixture available now so I guess we just have to deal with what we're given.

I've no doubt we'll be underdogs for any tie, as we're the lowest ranked team left in it, which will probably suit us.

Semi-final of the cup draw tomorrow and I still have an interest in it.  Un-f**king-believable!

It'd be criminal if he doesn't play:

Quote from: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/fa_cup/7300927.stm
Goalkeeper Luke Steele could miss out on playing at Wembley for Barnsley as the club have failed to reach a deal on his future with West Brom.

Steele has been on loan with the Tykes and helped them beat Liverpool and Chelsea to set up an FA Cup semi-final against Cardiff at Wembley on 6 April.

But his loan has run out and there is an impasse over extending the deal.

Talks are apparently deadlocked over who pays the player's wages during a proposed extended loan.

West Brom have been subsidising Steele's wages and the stumbling block is believed to be that they now want Barnsley to pay the majority of his wages.

If the guy wants to pay at Wembly that much he should forgo the portion of the wages that WBA have been paying. Simple. True also that if Barnsley see him as a good player for them they could use some of the gate receipts for him. I think its all just business negociation and it'll get sorted one way or another in the next couple of weeks.

I no i would certainly rather give up 40% of my wages for a couple of weeks and play in an fa cup final (whether i was luke steele or cristiano ronaldo) than have an extra couple of grand in the bank by the comments of the west brom chairman would be suprised if this didn't get sorted out.Hope Barnsley get to the final they deserve it after beating 2 of the big 4

Title: Good news for Barnsley in the Cup
Post by: Rod Paradise on March 20, 2008, 04:11:25 PM

Cup hero Steele re-joins Barnsley

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Barnsley have tied up a deal to sign FA Cup goalkeeping hero Luke Steele from West Brom on loan, with a permanent switch taking place in the summer.

Steele, 23, was on loan when Barnsley beat Liverpool and Chelsea to reach the FA Cup semi-finals and he can now play against Cardiff on 6 April at Wembley.

His initial loan ended on Monday, but he has re-joined Barnsley and will sign for them at the end of the season.

But if Barnsley meet West Brom in the Cup final, Steele will not be eligible.

West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace said: "I'm delighted for all parties that we've been able to reach agreement."

606: DEBATE
Tell us your thoughts on Steele's move back to Barnsley

The deal was on hold because West Brom and Barnsley were thought to want different deals.

West Brom were keen for Steele to join on a permanent basis and also wanted Barnsley to pay more of his wages while on loan - the Baggies subsidised his wages by paying 60% during his first month's spell.

Steele will now be able to play in the FA Cup semi-final against Cardiff at Wembley on 6 April, but under FA rules, he would not be able to play if the Tykes meet West Brom - who play Pompey in the other semi - in the final.

Peace added: "We've always been happy for Luke to go back to Barnsley and play in the semi-final, providing the deal was right for us.

"We felt we were a big help to Barnsley by allowing Luke to join them for a month and heavily subsidising his wages.

"Now Barnsley's financial situation has changed due to their lucrative FA Cup run, we've managed to strike a deal which suits everyone."

Steele will go straight back into the Barnsley team for their important Championship match against Sheffield United at Oakwell on Saturday.

GL Sheriff

so of my original bets I now have Portsmouth e/w at 14-1 running

which is a guaranteed profit win or lose in the final/Wanted WBA though for the real fun at 50-1 but hey ho

Pompey likely to be a good odds-on in the final, so I should probably have a small tickle on their opponent to hedge it...but I probably won't as I would expect them to win..and bank me the £175 or so.

Holy crap, looks like I'm ready to do this.  I just hope the lads are too.

Both clubs easily sold out their ticket allocations so should be a cracking atmosphere today.  As expected, most people are expecting Cardiff to win, which should hopefully be to our benefit.

I'm determined to enjoy this day, regardless of the outcome.  It's easier said than done though, as the butterflies are kicking in big style.

I think Nem is thinking along the lines that UEFA and the FA will have to discuss whether Cardiff should be allowed into Europe as a Welsh team playing in the English leagues. At the moment they are not but Im sure Cardiff will appeal it.

If they are successful it is one less block to Rangers and Celtic playing in England as they would be able to qualify for European comps from the English domestic leagues.

With current squads bottom half with the odd relegation scare or relegation. Long term though once they have held their own for a few years, i think they would improve due to the increased revenue and the already established massive fan base. To be at least Newcastle and Spurs level possibly beyond.

I do think that Celtic and Rangers being in the EPL would be a good thing, even though they would most probably hinder the progression of Spurs. Although talk of the Old Firm being automatic title challengers is way, way off the mark. Size and money alone doesn't automatically guarantee success; Newcastle are classic examples of this.

Hmmm this is so much the luck of the draw and your outsider not drawing one of the big 4.

What about Cardiff @ 200/1, a sod of place to go and play. A few home ties and we might be laughing.

Hope you backed it.

PS Gatso the tip nicker.  :D

lol. I obviously nick tips well then, these 2 weren't bad. on Cardiff e/w so quite happy. will be even happier once you pay me my share of your winnings too.

Boro have had so much luck in the draws for cup competitions in recent years, if they keep that up then it wouldn't suprise me to see them there or thereabouts.

not a great basis for a bet though. that's much the same as betting on red because the last few spins have come in red

I'd be looking at WBA as the best value e/w and Cardiff as a long shot. Cardiff are on a real hot streak and over the last 2 seasons have been superb on their day, just lacking consistency
