I have recently moved into my own place and need some internet connection in there real quick as it's killing me without. It's a 6 month lease and I know most are 12-month contracts.
Anyone know what my options are? And who are the best providers?

Check out http://www.broadband.co.uk, you can sort by contract term too. There seems to be a few doing a monthly contract but I guess you may be paying for it

Also, check out Quidco (or another cashback site) before signing as you may well get a few quid for signing up too, all helps.

Dependent on quite how high a usage you are looking at....could it be worth going for a dongle-type solution? Especially given you are only there for a few months - less faff etc. etc. Perhaps one of these as you can then use any wireless enabled devices you may have? http://store.three.co.uk/Mobile_Broadband/MiFi?ID=DGB54£16 a mth with £49 upfront for 5gb/mth = £24/mth overall cost for comparison Depends on timescales/forecasted data usage/required speeds I guess

If I download a torrent, say a 700mb file, does that come off the usage? If so I reckon I'd need a lot.

I'm no techie but almost 100% certain it would. Perhaps not the option for you.

Yeah if you are a heavy downloader then a dongle is a bad option and probably not as quick as you would like either.

Haha, it's definitely password protected but signal is strong. Need to chap their door regarding something else later so will put some feelers out.

If you know someone with a BT account, you could use their login details to access BT FON wi-fi if any of your neighbours are on BT as well.
This would work for light/occasional usage, but not for download films - as the number of minutes you can use per month is restricted.
If you get a 12-month contract, can you not simply move it to your next place when you move (assuming you can go with the same provider there)? I've moved my contracts to my new address when I've moved around.

And by feelers I mean ask them who provides their Internet, although they've been here 3 years and are likely to be contracted up.

Didn't even consider the option of just moving the contract to new place. Clever.
