Welcome to latest GUKPT update straight from Walsall, where last year Jerome Bradpiece took home the trophy. Can he repeat the feat this year or will we be crowning a new champion? One person it won't be, is Julian Thew, who is taking a break this week (the poker community breathes a sigh of relief...), however all the usual suspects should be here, so let us know if there's someone you want us to follow.

Ian Woodley bets 1,100 on the turn of a Ahrt Kc Qc 9c board, his opponent mucks, leaving Ian muttering, "Fackinhell..." I'm guessing he felt he bet too much,.

Finally at this juncture, unopened pot on Ariston's table. One player opens for 2,000. Gets no callers. I can't confirm that he showed Jacks and declared, "I only ever seem to lose a big pot with these..."

Matt Tyler: "The first pot on our table was won by 6-high..."

As I arrived in the arena I saw the end of a hand between matey boy and matey girl, both holding baby aces on the A high flop. Matey boy being the victor of a rather meaty looking pot.

Another matey boy moment, this time with 5 of them!  ;ashamed;

An UTG limp was raised to 250 by the Hijack. The button started a string of calls as the SB, BB and original limp all called.

The flop came
 Kd 6c 3c

Quickly checked round to the raiser who slid a lone 500 chip into the pot. The SB was the lone caller and the 2 mateys saw the  Ts on the turn.

A quick check from the SB saw matey boy in the hijack bet out 1000, again a single chip.

After a brief thought the SB calls and the river is black... but the 2s doesn't complete the possible flush draw.

A quick check from the SB sees 2 chips being slid in from the hijack - a 1000 and a 500.

The SB dwells up and passes, a bit of an anti climax but a decent boost to the stack of matey boy in the hijack!

I just caught the exit hand of Alan Vinnicombe, arriving at the table just as they were counting down the stacks!

Speaking of 'aments', Jon Raab has just had a long moan about the use of adding 'aments' to everything these days. He compared this to Watergate and how people are lazy in adding the little suffix to everything.

I just caught a hand between Barry Grime on the button and Craig Burgess in the SB.

I arrived to see the flop action with a bet by BG of 700 into a pot that was slightly bigger.

The board read:
 9s Ts 9h

The turn was  7d and both players checked.

The 5s river was met with a bet of 700 from CB, which was called after a small dwell.

Burgess tabled pocket kings and took down the pot.

Mad Turk raises it up and gets two callers in Surindar Sunar and Jehan Zaib

Flop:

6c 9d 6s

There's 4,500 in the pot already, I think it was re-raised preflop. Checked to Mad Turk who bets 1,500. Surindar calls and so does Jehan...

Gemal checks again, Mad Turk bets 3,500 now. Again Surindar flat-calls, but this time Jehan moves in for about 1,950 behind him. Mad Turk tells the dealer, "After this hand, can you check the deck to see if there are more than four sixes in it?" He promptly moves in behind him, before Surindar stacks up his chips and moves in as well!

I just caught the end of Thomas Naylor at the hands of Robert Rees.

Naylor's last chips going into the pot on the river with the A on the board matching the A in the A9 he held.

Rees however had made 2 pair with his Q5 and the pot was shipped to him.

Micky is playing today. Nick Slade is shortish, whilst Matt Tyler is still near his starting stack.

Paul Jackson was just bluffed out of a pot when Ben Middleton bet 500 on a 4d 9h 8h flop and then 1200 on the Tc turn. Ben showed Kh Qs after Maurice McCarthy convinced him to. Don't like showing this, I'd hate to reveal for free that I'm capable of firing the second bullet...

He's chipleader with 25k at the moment. Meh, I had 120k in the GJP tournament by this time last week...

I just arrived at table 11 just in time to see mad turk slide in a huge stack of 1000s in response to a bet of 1600. In total there must have been at least 15 of them, "I've learnt my lesson, no more free cards!".

The flop read:

Matey boy went into a big dwell, the raise covers his entire stack of 7000 chips, and turk starts talking, listing possible hands including flush draws, straight draws and air at one point he even asked me if I'd call with matey boy's hand (assumed to be KJ).

I said I'd definitely call and we both agreed that is probably why I'm not playing...

Eventually Turk calls for the clock and with mere seconds to spare matey boy calls.

On their backs and Turk has pocket kings v matey boys Ad Jd.

Turn and river are both queens and matey boy is eliminated.

Jon Raab has decided that there's no point in doing full chip counts until the 4th level because of the numbers left and how long it takes. Therefore, early on, if you want specific chip counts, please ask us for them.

I just watched the demise of Ali Mallu.

In a family pot Ali, in late position, bet 750 about the size of the pot. The flop was 3 hearts and ace high. He got one caller in Ali Zihni.

The turn was 7d and it's checked to Mallu on the button, who bets 1900.

Zihni decides enough is enough by shoving a big stack of chips into the pot.

Mallu responds with an emphatic all in and Zihni comes along for the ride.

On their backs and Mallu has 7h 3h for the flush, with Zihni having A7.

The river was an A to house up Zihni and send Mallu to the rail in what can only be described as a reverse malluage.

Anthony Quinn is OUT. Ariston limped with Tens, Rebecca Leach raises to 500, Quinn makes it 1,600. Leach makes it 3,500 and Quinn moved in. Leach called with Queens only to find Quinn had 5-bet all-in with Aces...Queen on the flop though.

News is just reaching us that Dave Smith is out, along with Paul Jackson and Steve Nash.

Jeff Kimber has doubled up with Kings against Adam Wilkinson's Tens. A slightly bitter Nick Slade said he passed Jacks, despite his short stack, and would've spiked.

I arrived at table 7 to see Paul Marvin betting 3.5k from the big blind - a pot sized bet - with the flop reading:

S Safari asked him if he'd do this everytime, and after a short dwell pushed all in. Looked like he had about 15k more to, which easily covered Marvin's stack.

Mad Turk has knocked out the Scrabbliciously-named Zaheer Zeb, the Mad one set him on a Q-T-8 flop, and Zeb dwelt with middle set for a good five minutes before calling only to see Turk with the very nutty J-9 which held o, as more chips are added to his stack.

Alan Vinson has doubled through Ariston on a 8c 5d 6d 8d with Jacks against Kh 5h. The river a blank deuce.

A couple of quick hands I saw.

First I saw the tail end of a coup with Ben Callinan doubling up with AK v Stephen Slavin's 77. A was the first card out.

I can't tell you the size of Callinan's stack now as it seems to has disappeared into his cavernous hands.

Secondly I saw a hand between  P Charalambous and  Ved Madan.

Charalambous had raised to 600 and was met with Madan coming over the top for 1k more. Des Jonas, in the blinds, wondered what Madan was upto as he hadn't seen Charalambous' raise but soon got out of the way leaving Charalambous to think about his next move.

It didn't take him too long to find and a pass and he showed his  Aspades Qc.

'Riverdave' Dave Penley looks flummoxed when Craig Tarmey check/calls his 1,100 bet on a 5h Aspades Kc flop before insta-shoving on the Ad turn. Penley passes.

Consensus on the buffet from the other press is...avoid. "It's like prison food."

Wandering through the tables on the look out for some action I see Dominc Kay and Maurice McCarthy looking at a flop of

Kay says he's got nothing, and as he's honest he's not lying. McCarthy agrees and says he'll have to try to take the pot, even though he has nothing.

He bets 600 and Kay calls because he's "Pot committed"...

Turn is 8s and Kay checks, McCarthy bets another 600 to "charge (Kay) to hit a spade".

"I might not have a spade" quips Kay whilst looking at his cards.

"You do" says McCarthy.

"Well if I do and I hit I'll have to value bet the river"

The river is 4s and Kay checks.

McCarthy thinks a while and checks behind.

"I thought you'd bet" says Kay and flips  Ahrt Ks, plenty enough to beat the red nines of McCarthy.

Sloping out of the press room I saw some action at Mickey Wernick's table.

Firstly on a flop of  Aspades 8c 9c Jon "Skalie" Kalmar bet out 3500, into a pot of around 4500.

Mickey made it 8000 to go and was met with an all in from Skalie.

A short dwell from the legend and he passes to be shown  Ahrt by skalie.


The very next hand Mark Whitley made it 1200 UTG and was met by an all in for 2900 more by Stephen Nash.

Whitley asks for a count, thinks a while and calls.

Afraid he went out just after the break. No details I'm afraid.

Ved Madan is out, I just caught the end of the hand, his QQ no match for  Andrew O'flahertys KQ, due to the matching K on the board.

Another "just missed" incident occured as I arrived at a table to see  Luke Patten raking in a huge pot!

I think the unlucky victim was Mickey Wernick, whose stack wasn't looking as healthy as it had been previously.

Also spied by me was  Ky Hutchinson moving all in when an ace fell on the river of a previously raggy board. Mad Turk surmised that he must have an ace and eventually passed, only to be shown KJ for nothing but king high!

Jim Reid has doubled up his meagre stack courtesy of Jeff Kimber, the nines in his hand holding up versus Jeff's pair of ducks on a K-K-K-A-3 board.

Mark Forrester is OUT. Paul Ruddy's 9-9 beating his 7-7 on a 8-5-5-A-5 board.

Maurice McCarthy, who predicted that he would win this comp at 6.45pm this evening, just bet 3k on the river of a Kh 5c 6h Qd 9d, but got Dominic Kay to fold. McCarthy shows Jd Td.

All is not grand on the good ship John Shipley, he's shipped his last pot and is now a man overboard. ;technolog;

On my wanders I saw DC scooping a small pot, nothing major but every little helps!

Also saw a big pot between  Richard Teatum and  Simon Zacharias.

We join the hand as Zacharias had reraised to 2600 preflop, Teatum called and no one else saw the flop of
 Kc Jc Th

Zacharias bets out 2200 and Teatum made it 8k.

After giving it some theatrics Zacharias moves all in and Teatum instacalls.

Teatum has KT, but Zacharias has AQ for the flopped nuts.

board comes Ad 4d and Zacharias scoops a nice pot!

Teatum looks a little short with around 8000 left.

I walked past DC's table and noticed his stack looking a bit healthier than before, he then proceded to make a raise preflop so I stood by notepad in hand to get all the details.

He made it 1k preflop and got 2 callers, one of which was in the blinds.

The flop came down Qd Td 6h and all 3 players checked.

The turn was 4h and Scott Edwards lead out for 1500, DC call and matey boy passes.

River  came down the 8d and Scott leads out for 3000.

After a long think DC folds and Scott can't resist showing the  Kh, which leads DC to turn over  Kc.

I just saw an odd hand unfold between Ray Wire and Matey Boy (who was lacking the id tag that tells us who is who!).

I arrived to see Ray considering a bet of 1100 on the  6d 4h Jc flop.

Eventually the clock was called and about 30 seconds in Ray decides to make a raise to 4500.

This is where it starts to get a little odd as after a pause for thought matey boy simultaneously moved all in and flipped his cards over.

Wire flips his  8h 8s and there is a bit of confusion as to what happens next as Matey Boy had moved in for 2375 more... most had assumed he was covered and just calling.

I just saw Dave Penly survive an all in with AK v QQ, with the ace arriving on the river.

A bit of talking later and all of Langford's chips are in the pot with K9.

I just watched a few hands on Ariston's table and the following hand came up on Russ' bug blind...

Matey boy says "raise", "not too much" pleads Ariston and he's given a fairly standard 3xBB raise to 3000.

It's passed round to Ariston who calls fairly quickly and checks in the dark as the dealer spreads:
 2c 4d 6d

Matey boy bets out another 3000 and responds with a raise to 12000.


After a lengthy dwell matey boy passes, but both show their cards and Ariston has top set with pocket 6s, matey boy shows QQ - good pass!

Very slow now, Mad Turk passing Sevens and a 3,550 raise to a re-raise to 11,500 from Niall Charlton who reciprocated by showing Queens.

Mick Fletcher, after a quiet day, (a regular day can involve him having 50,000 by level 2 and being out by level 4) has slowly been building up his stack due to some impressive grinding. Matt Tyler and Ariston are also going well. Everyone is playing pretty cagily though.

Alan Vinson is out!

His push with KQo was met with a push behind him from Maurice McCarthy with pocket 9s.

Luke Patten has knocked out Craig Burgess, Ad 6d vs 7c 7s. Crucial bullet hitting the flop, prompting a flurry of good-natured handshakes and good-luck wishes from the exiteer.

Another exit now, there was a raise and a call preflop before Mad Turk pushed all in, he found a willing caller in the Tetris-styled hoody wearer John Heath.

Heath's As Qd was in bad shape against the Turk's rockets.

The first card out however was a Q, raising the spectre of a grizzly out law, but the rest of the board was blanks - ending up as Q 4 7 2 10 - and the Mad Turk gets a healthy boost to his stack while Heath heads to the rail!

Hmmm, bit of a controversial one here.

Jim Morgan has raised from what looks to be the cutoff, and it's passed to Maurice McCarthy who moves all-in. Jim says he doesn't think he can pass. Maurice keeps telling him to pass, "Fold" "You're behind" etc...Jim says, "I'm only behind to two hands", Maurice replies, "Then you should fold" and "I'm going to show you." Jim passes his Queens, Maurice shows Kings but it felt like they were both giving away their hands there.

Someone could have argued for possible collusion here, but then I'm told by someone else Maurice has done this in a cash game only to show 7-3off or some such filth for a £1,000 pot or so...

It's great to see the irrepressible Matt Tyler bang in the thick of things. I imagine he was being his usual quiet, shy, reserved self no doubt!  ::) ::) ::)

Also good to see the Jaffa leading the pack at the moment. It's always evident when you discuss poker with Jeff he has a really profound understanding of the game and it's a real pleasure talking strategy with him.

If he runs half good when he comes back for Day 2, he's going to take some stopping and should he make it through to heads up, well...I know he hates people mentioning it but he is the World Heads Up champ you know.

simon does look a lot like surinder though so an easy mistake to make

no contraversy on the maurice v jimmy hand. I have been present many times when maurice goes into "your beat"mode and he often turns over absolute junk then laughs and points at you. A couple of hands after that he raises my big blind the standard 7 x the bb and I look down to see jacks. This time he hardly says a word and I have to question him, he is still quiet. I eventually fold them as I hadnt played all day to go out with them damn hooks (my only option was push/fold v maurice having position). He had AK so I was happy with that.

Of the blackpool boys who came down we got a good few through but were let down by the salad so we didn't get a full compliment through- that boy will never win anything I swear ;)

a quick question  since when jonathan raab became poker expert to comment on how player will progress? for him to offer 11/10 for me not to make second day while i was chip leader was abit comical  but   ever1 have their opinions i respect
