Title: Expekt.com Norwegian Championships ME: FINAL TABLE
Post by: Djinn on May 05, 2008, 04:20:02 PM
We're about 45 minutes from starting the end, if that makes sense, of the Norwegian Championships £500 ME.  A sellout affair, with 517 players, they've busted each other with Scandinavian abandon until reaching the final Nine.  And they are:

Sondre Barlien-- 1036000
Stig Rune Kveen -- 777500
Erik Borkvik -- 613000
Marcus Pettersson -- 602500
Ian Frazer -- 526500
Svein Arnesen -- 436000
Oyvind Efraimsen -- 423500
Kjetil Skau -- 422000
Tage Almark -- 308000

Sole UK player Frazer has a decent stack, and we reckon the Norwegian commentators will be biting their nails off lest a Brit win this prestigious Nordic tournament.  Nearly a week of top class play, a veritable smorgasbord of new and interesting names and faces, and a faultlessly hosted event by DT (http://www.dusktilldawnpoker.com/index.php?affiliate=blonde)D (http://www.dusktilldawnpoker.com/index.php?affiliate=blonde) and it's all about to come to its thrilling conclusion.  See you at 5pm.

Near instant double through for Kjetil Skau, courtesy of Erik Borkvik, all in preflop with Jh Js against Ad Kd.  First card out:  Kh  Second card out:  2h (not interesting, just building tension…)  Third card out:  Jc!  Turn and river no help and Kjetil wins a pot which may just have catapulted him into second in chips behind Sondre Barlien.

ELIMINATION!  Oh the drama - Svein Arnesen gets it all in with Ahrt Aspades, ideal, wouldn't you say, against the Qc Qh of Sondre Barlien.  But the Jc 9d Ts on the flop actually got there with the 8h... and cracked Aces send our first player to the rail - Svein Arnesen, finishing 9th, winning £4,330.

Hi Jen- any idea on the policy re deals? I know DTD always do it on chip count but does a Norwiegen championship precedent supercede that rule?

I had a chat with Simon Trumper who suggested to Henrik that should they get down to the point where a deal would be likely, they should still play for 10% (four handed that would be about 25k).  I also found out that the winner gets a bonus WSOP Main Event seat.  Add to this the character of the players that have made the final, and the fact that it's being broadcast live all over Norway, with post production being made to include the hole card cams for a show, and I would say the possibility of them dealing and just kind of giving up the end stages is very very slim.

Long, drawn out pot just played out between Oyvind and Erik.

It all started so simply...

Passed round to Erik in the small blind he completed, only to find Oyvind raising it up...he now RE-RAISED enough to virtually set Oyvind in, meaning Oyvind now had a decision for his tournament life...

He stared at Erik, shuffled his chips, looked pained and tortured. Erik went deep into full bulgy eye mode and most of the time his bulgy eyes were trained in my direction...MOST UNNERVING!

After eons had passed, Oyvind did likewise, shaking his head and passing, leaving Erik's eyes to withdraw back into their sockets where they belong as he picked up the pot...

With the blinds at 10k/20k, Tage Almark raises in early position to 80k.  It passes to big blind Stik Kveen, who thinks for a while and annoucnes all in.  A sip of what looks like beer (again, seriously impressed by the hardcore nature of Norwegians), a long think, a bit of a scowl but an eventual decision to call for his tournament life.  He winces as he sees his opponent fllip first - a hand that has him dominated.
Almark:  Aspades Jh
Kveen:  Ahrt Qd

Flop:  Kd 5d 8d
Turn:  9h  So only a non-diamond Jack will save Almark...
River: 4c  That's not a non-diamond Jack.

Therefore we lose Tage Almark in 8th place, winning £5,412

A nice guy, talked to him in some breaks and at the end of days, when he would appear, beaming, with a bottle of Corona in each hand and chat to his lady railer.  He said he was delighted to have made the final, and although he is bound to feel some disappointment, he's played four days of poker against Norway's finest and done pretty well overall.

Yes, the best venue I've personally played poker in.

Much attention has been paid to the aesthetics of the place and it shows... It's beautiful to look at, sympathetically lit and overall very easy on the eye. Then there's the facilities; terminals where you can play online poker; nice smoking area, masses of space to actually play poker. Food? Excellent, wide variety of choice, puts most casinos (and even some restaurants) to shame. Then we have the staff who are efficient and friendly;  helpful, and often beautiful valets abound, ready to assist however they can. And I haven't even mentioned Simon Trumper who rushes around, making sure everyone is happy, solving problems and organising events with a flair and hunger for the job that is a pleasure to watch.

We've been treated excellently this week, but we are not alone in this. Every Norwegian I have spoken to is blown away by DTD and rightly so. Rob's vision of excellence has come to fruition and he has single handedly raised the bar for all future poker establishments.

Congratulations to everyone involved.

(I was not paid to write this btw!)

Erik Puts the Kjetil On...

Something other than the Qd Qs he actually had, when he minraised him on a Jh Kd Kc flop.  Erik Borkvik raised from 100k to 200k, and it looked like he might have given his opponent second thoughts, but then the pot called the Kjetil back...

After that, they both checked the 9c turn, and Kjetil Skau quickly checked the 2d river, slightly more slowly checked behind.  But Skau's Queens were good and won him a half mil pot.

The next hand Kjetil continues the aggression...

Kjetil riases to 60k and is called by Sondre, the two chip leaders going at it...

Kh 5h 2s ...

CHECK, CHECK...

TURN: 4s

Sondre bets out 115k...CALLED quickly by Kjetil.

RIVER: Th

Sondre bets 215k, Kjetil shoves!!!!

Sondre passes reluctantly in the face of such a big bet - AK face up. and Kjetil takes down his 2nd consecutive 500k pot! Kjetil's steaming now!

Pass to Ian Frazer, who raises to what looks like 60k - it's his.  Then it's Oyvind Efraimsen's turn to pick up the blinds and antes, moving his short stack in on the small blind, with no caller.  After the last break, they have calmed down considerably, although with the blinds now 12k/24k ante 2.5k those without the luxury of million+ stacks like Barlien are going to feel pressure.

And again - Oyvind Efraimsen shoves it in yet again, but it's just over 220k and Stig Kveen finds a call, as you might expect, with Ad Kd
Oyvind shows:  Ac 8s

Flop:  8d 3h 2s
Turn:  Ahrt
River:  8h  Just to put the housey icing on his outdraw double-up cake.  Nearly 500k for Oyvind once again.

Interesting background info on Stig Kveen, courtesy of InsaneTTM - he's the training partner of Norway's top skiier Petter Northug, who just happened to come for the event and was nearly wheedled back on the same plane as his friend on Sunday.  Rather than let his chips be blinded off, however, he rescheduled some stuff and built them into the stack he has now, Seven-handed on the final table!

Title: Re: Expekt.com Norwegian Championships ME: FINAL TABLE
Post by: JungleCat03 on May 05, 2008, 06:50:36 PM
The blinds are 12k 24k 2.5k...(worth nicking)

Pettersson makes it 70k and is rewarded for his aggression as he picks up the blinds and antes...( a whopping 53.5k at the moment)

The next hand Stig raises to 100k as it is passed to him, Sondre calls with c 250k in the pot...

FLOP: 8h Jh 7d

Sondre checks...Stig bets out about 100k and takes it down...

The above are pedestrian hands in some ways, but you can feel the players are only holding their innate scandinavian aggression in temporarily and as the pressure rises, sooner or later, something will snap and all hell will break loose...

Sofa could you make perverse suggestions on another thread.

Sondre raises to 75k and everyone folds, so he picks up the blinds and antes.

Amazingly shortly after this, one of the blonde ladies watching from the rail strips down to her underwear, runs across the table sending chips flying all over the place, shouting "I love the way DT (http://www.dusktilldawnpoker.com/index.php?affiliate=blonde)D (http://www.dusktilldawnpoker.com/index.php?affiliate=blonde) air feels on my skin!" As she is restrained and led off the tables, Jen is overheard saying "about time we saw a big pair..."

Oyvind raises it up and gets a call from  Sondre in the big blind.

The flop falls 6h Aspades 2s.

A quick check from Sondre and Oyvind looks shifty as he twitches under his whiskers but bets out 100k...

Sondre doesn't think for too long before spiralling his cards toward the muck in dramatic fashion...

A nice pot there for Oyvind and he decides to put his chips into use straight away, re-raising Ian Frazer's raise to 75k to 225k. Instant shove from Ian suggesting he has a VERY good hand and more beardy twitching from Oyvind, who looks uncomfortable and despite getting relatively good odds, he throws his hand away showing the Ac.

With that pot, Ian has propelled himself well into contention, with approx 800k, which is a stack vying for 2nd place at this point!

MULTI-WAY ACTION!

Sondre limps in for 24k, causing a limp fest with Erik limping also, Stig completing from the small blind and Kjetil checking the big blind...

(exciting...)

FLOP: 7c 8h Qd

Check, check from the 2 blinds who don't look interested in this hand and a check also from Sondre, who is fidgeting a little bit suspiciously...

Erik (the viking, who incidentally has taken the opportunity during the break to adorn himself with a baseball cap, and shades, as if to prevent further comments from me regarding his suspiciously bulging eyes) bets out 70k.

Folded round to Sondre who now counts out a cheeky check raise to 185k!

Eric looks disappointed and his eyeballs press desperately against the lenses of his sunglasses, but ultimately he loses interest and throws his hand away.

Cheeky grin from Sondre who shares a joke with Ian as he sweeps up his chips greedily...

Marcus Pettersson raises preflop to 70k, called by Sondre Berlian in the blind.
Flop:  3h 5c 9s.  Sondre asks how much his opponent is playing...and then bets 60k.  Unfazed by the query, or, apparently, the bet, Marcus immediately moves in, which takes the pot down.

Limp from Sondres but Erik, feeling the pinch after losing that last hand, decides to lay the smack down on Sondres and shoves allin.

He is rewarded for his valiance as his fellow players, including the limping Barlien Sondres, all fold and he picks up the pot.

GO ERIK!

Ian Frazes to 90k... and after a preflop dwell Oyvind Efraimsends his cards into the muck.

Erik Borkviktorious in a button nick of the blinds.  (This in no way supposes he was button raising with filth, just a turn of Fraze).

Ok, quick lookey-likey at this juncture.

Here we have Swedish band Abba in their pomp.

One thing I never noticed though, was that Barlien Sondre and Oyvind Efraimsen were in the band!!

Sondre is far left(with shorter hair these days), Oyvind far right(same hair), Ian Frazer in the middle.

Sondre raises to 80k preflop, and after a very cagey patch finds Oyvind Efraimsen moving all in.  A count is requested:

Ian thinks about it but passes, while Sondre Berlian dwells for ages and then starts nodding more and more vigorously until actually saying the word:  "Call."

Oyvind:  Ahrt Ac
Sondre: Ks Jc

Flop:  7s 6s 3s  (some breath is held)
Turn:  Tc
River:  Th

Oyvind Efraimsen doubles up to 650k and a previously very quiet table of Norwegians playing the £100 rebuy explode into cheering and applause with the sort of gusto only manageable after nearly two levels without an elimination, and several double vodkas.

Sondre was left as the short stack after that last coup for Oyvind, and was in no mood to mess about, shoving allin over the top of a Marcus Pettersson raise to 75k for 253k total.

Pettersson thinks about it but ultimately Sondre's raise is just big enough to get him off an ace, and he is left as

(http://uktv.co.uk/images/standarditem/L1/513577_L1.jpg) - a mashed swede.

Welcome relief for Sondre as he picks that pot up, cheeky as always, after Marcus shows the ace, he shows him a 6 in return - hehe!!!

Sondre moves all in for the second time since recently becoming a short stack, and Erik moves in over the top...everyone else quickly sidesteps this one, and they're on their backs:

Sondre:  Aspades Js
Erik:  Tc Td

Flop: 3c 2s 7s
Turn:  Ac
River: 9d

A double up.  Again.  It seems that someone is always going to be on that desperate-ish sized stack, though, whoever wins these confrontations.  Sondre Berlian has been remarkably consistent in keeping a big stack all the way through this tournament, so it must have been a shock to drift (briefly) beneath the average mark...

Erik, now the new shortstack with sub 400k ships it in and no one calls him so he takes down the pot uncontested...

Kjetil and Stig have both been quiet for a while now...I'd've thought Kjetil in particular might have pushed the similarly sized medium stacks around a bit more assertively but he is clearly playing a more patient game...

Sondre raises to 105k, and everyone folds quickly. He shows K-K with a grin and seems very happy to be right back in the thick of things after falling short just a few hands ago...

Erik shoves again and this time...almost as if he took my chiding for his conservative play seriously...Kjetil calls!!!!

Erik : 9d Th
Kjetil : 6d 6c (Erik was on a complete move but is delighted to find himself in a coin flip situation!)

FLOP: 2d Ad 8c 3d ..(flush draw for Erik now with his 2 overcards...).....RIVER....Qs!!!

No good for the man with the majestically bulging eyeballs and we lose him from the comp meaning...

Erik Borkvik is OUT, eliminated in 7th spot, winning £7,577

This pot further cements Kjetil's dominant position as chip leader and means we play on 6 handed to see who will triumph...

Play has restarted, with the final Six of the Norwegian Championships ME fighting out their final table at the same time as elsewhere in the club the £100 rebuy and £300 Deepstack are both playing their finals.  Pretty excellent organisation overall...

The first major action after the break is major indeed, with Ian Frazer getting it all in with Ahrt Jc vs. Stig Kveen's Ad Kc... A King arriving merely cemented Kveen's ahead status, and a shock elimination rids the tournament of the sole remaining UK player:

Ian Frazer finishes in 6th position, winning £9,742

Stig Rune Kveen, coolly enjoying his sudden double-elimination-fuelled chip rise (after a little bit of emotion was shown in going over to the commentators for a bit of hi-fiving and what might have been hugging):

There's a raise preflop and Sondre and Stig tangle...

The flop comes Td 6s 7s which causes the chips to simply fly into the middle!

Hands on their back for this monster pot!

Sondre : 8d 8h for a pair and gutshot BUT

STIG has Ac Th for TPTK, meaning he holds the advantage for now...

TURN: 5h (Sondre's outs increase from 6 to 10...)

RIVER....Aspades!

NO GOOD FOR Sondre, Stig takes his 2nd victim in successive hands, meaning...

Sondre Barlien is OUT, eliminated in 5th spot, winning £14,072

Great game sir, but Stig's patient play has been rewarded as he moves up a spot and closer to challenging the humungous stack of Kjetil.

We continue four handed! Amazing start after the short hiatus!!

Marcus Pettersson moves in under the gun... good enough for the blinds and antes.
The very next hand he's the big blind (obv) and small blind Oyvind Efraimsen makes the all-in move.  This time he calls!

Marcus Ahrt 7d
Oyvind:  Ks 4s

Flop: 9h Qc 8s
Turn:  7d
River:  Aspades

And after a tense chip count it's discovered that Efraimsen is still technically in with 140k-ish... but I can't see those chips sitting there for long...

RANDOM NEARLY NAKED LADY ALERT

This is NOT a test.  Really happened.  Anyone watching the live feed will just have seen a pretty blonde lady in a thong and see-through pink dress wiggle round the table and then wander off into the distance.  Or they've laced our dinner with some very weird, very specific hallucinogen.  Sorry Llevan, she was only there for about 15 seconds and Kev had the camera...

And while we're sad that Rury from Siktilt wasn't the first poker streaker (I really thought he might be convinced), the action moves on apace.

Oyvind moves all in preflop for 132k.  Kjetil is the only one thinking about making the call, but no... Oyvind wins some desperately needed blinds.

And he does it again!  By 3am he will have won the tournament at this rate!

Marcus Pettersson has a go at it, all in on the button...no callers for him either.

This is 100% true. Myself and Jen watched mouths agape as a partially naked scandinavian lady ran past the cameras wiggling her bits, then ran off again.

I promise you I would have LOVED to have taken a picture but sadly Kev had the camera at the time, so if he hasn't snapped it, well, you know who to blame.

SHOCKING!

This time Kjetil has had enough and calls Oyvind's shove! We have a showdown!

Oyvind Ahrt 7c, Kjetil : 6c 6d, it's a race folks! Let's see them cards...

FLOP: Jd Tc 7d - A mighty Nordic cheer resounds around DTD as the popular Oyvind moves into the lead...

Marcus raises preflop to 160k... Kjetil is the one re-raising all in now.  Marcus instacalls all in, for a  huge pot.

Marcus: Ac Js
Kjetil: 7s 7d

The board comes 8c Qs Jc 9h 9c and there is some applause, but equal "Boooo"ing from the Norwegians (who were equally vocal in their support of Oyvind, who seems very popular).  This is because he's actually Swedish and probably shouldn't win the Norwegian Championships, from the point of view of national pride and Expekt.com, I would imagine...  But then someone came on the mic speaking Norwegian and presumably told them that this wasn't very gentlemanly or how it was done in Norway, so some applause sounded for Pettersson's double up right at the end.

Kjetil, having once been a monster chip leader, is now suffering in the crucial races, and although still in could be in trouble.

OMG a flop!  This time when Marcus Pettersson raises on the button, small blind Stig Kveen called.

Ts 8d 4h are the first cards I've seen for a while.  Stig checks, Marcus bets 300k.  Very quick call...
Turn:  Jc  Stig requests a countdown on his opponent... and moves all in, after a minute or so.  Back to Marcus, who passes, at this juncture.
Stig shows 9h 9c.  Which, while we were waiting for the inevitable tank to end, Junglecat put him spot on.  If only he could speak Norwegian...he'd be in the commentary box lucking out with his hand guesses live on air!

Back from the break, the battle continues.

Kev has been suitably chastised for failing to snap the bare naked lady parading round the poker floor (king of norkage my ****!)

Marcus raises to 200k, Stig shoves and once again Marcus is forced to lay down. Stig is really pwning him hard at the moment and with his mighty 3 million plus stack it will be very hard for the others to catch him...

Title: Re: Expekt.com Norwegian Championships ME: FINAL TABLE

Chip Counts:

Stig Rune Kveen -- 3,250,000
Marcus Pettersson -- 700,000
Kjetil Skau -- 691,000
Oyvind Efraimsen -- 636,000

Title: Re: Expekt.com Norwegian Championships ME: FINAL TABLE

Kjetil raises to 150k..and picks up the juicy 95k that is in the pot preflop...

Oyvind riases to 150k, Stig once again just uses his enormous stack to shove over the top of his opponent, and Oyvind INSTA-folds.

What is happening here is that the 3 shorter stacks are all unwilling to bust in 4th spot so Stig is just coming over the top all the time, making them fold, buffering his already ENORMOUS stack and beginning to almost lock up this event...

As if he to prove his domination, the next hand he calls a raise from Kjetil then just bets out 150k on the flop. Kjetil passes, Stig shows a total bluff...

...he has 70% of the chips in play now. Can anyone stop him???

Title: Re: Expekt.com Norwegian Championships ME: FINAL TABLE

Shortest stack Oyvind Efraimsen pushes pre - Marcus says call, in that matter-of-fact, instant way one does with ACES...

Marcus: Ad Aspades
Oyvind:  8h 4h

Flop:  Kc 2c Tc
Turn:  Jd
River:  Qc

So it is indeed all over for Oyvind Efraimsen, who finishes in 4th position, winning £17,320 or 173,121.75 NOK

A Jh 5c Jc flop is seen by Stig Kveen and Marcus Pettersson... no action at this point...
Turn: 3s  Now there's 50k bet out from Stig, called by button Marcus.
River:  8h  Now Stig looks at his impassively chip-riffling Swedish opponent, counts out what looks like 200k, bets it, and is rewarded with a pass.

Kjetil shoves preflop, and gets called by Marcus!

Norwegian/ Swede action!!!

Marcus shows a fine Ac Kc...

Kjetil, a less fine, but LIVE, Qd 5s.

So to the flop.

FLOP: 5d 4d 7h ...and the value of live cards is plain to see as Kjetil's hand races into the lead. Can it hold?

TURN: Kd NO! Marcus spikes one of his required 6 outs and Kjetil is nearly gone...

RIVER: 2s...that's IT! No miracle means Kjetil has blown a fuse, and...

Kjetil Skau is OUT, eliminated in 3rd spot, winning £24,897

Small point of clarification here.

As this is the NORWEGIAN poker championships, and there is only ONE norwegian left standing, Stig Rune Kveen, it has been announced that Stig is the Norwegian poker champion! He wins the title, the bonus of a WSOP ME seat and the trophy I believe. A little odd to find ourselves in this situation but that is the way it is and his opponent Marcus Pettersson, being Swedish, is playing on solely for the shot at first prize, a juicy £70,362, a worthy prize in itself...

Title: Re: Expekt.com Norwegian Championships ME: FINAL TABLE

Marcus Pettersson -- 1,155,000
Stig Rune Kveen -- 3,890,000

They just announced Stig as the New Norwegian Poker Champion, to a vigorous round of applause and cheering from his remaining countrymen who, from the sound of it, have just been biding their time mingled in with all the cash games and, surprise surprise, drinking.  The trophy is already officially his - but can he cement his victory by taking the first prize?

Probably.

Stig raises preflop, Marcus announces all in, and quick as you like he's called and the cards are over:

Ad 3d for the all-in Marcus vs Aspades 9s for Stig...

Flop:  6s Ts 8d
Turn:  Ac
River:  3s  There's a little bit of quiet until the Norwegians in the room realise that the river might have paired the Swede, but it also pared him, as the flush finished off the shorter stacked player - Marcus Petterson, OUT in 2nd for £39,836 or 398,467.04 NOK...

But crowned Stig Rune Kveen the Norwegian Champion, 2008, winning him £70,362!

or 703,809.07 NOK

While JC gets the final pictures, and the winner gets mobbed by some very relieved Norwegians, I just want to reiterate how smoothly the whole thing has been run here.  514 runners, innumerable crates of vodka, food at all hours and dealers working long hours to accommodate the phenomenal demand for any and everything poker related, and it went pretty much without a hitch.

As I hear a champagne cork pop somewhere behind me (probably not the last tonight) I am sure that this won't be the last big event held here.

So that's it! We have our winner!

Some final shots to wrap what has been an immensely enjoyable event up.

This is what the 514 entrants were playing for. The shiny trophy and the enticing wads of cash...

But in the words of the highlander, there can be only one. This one, Stig Rune Kveen, posing with his new booty!!!

Yes with that final flourish, Kveen is KING!!!!

And a final mention also to the swede, Marcus Pettersson, whose superb performance netted him £39,836, and even the grudging respect of those naughty Norwegians who were booing him earlier!

Pettersson couldn't have done much better son...

So the tournament finishes in thrilling, climactic fashion, a fitting and worthy end to what has been a superbly run, superbly played, superbly enjoyable 5 days.

We've had a ball, the norwegians have had the time of their lives and quite frankly, I can't wait for the next one!

For now though, our journey is at an end, so thanks for following us but till next time...
