I knew I wouldn't need to look far for a laptop thread....

Going to buy a new laptop purely for browsing, the odd game of poker, downloading the occassional film etc. Key is that it can run Football Manager at a fast rate, as my last laptop meant no FM.

FM requires OS Windows XP / Vista / Windows 7; Processor: 1.4GHZ+ for XP or 2.0GHZ+ for Vista / Windows 7; Memory: 512MB Ram for XP or 1GB Ram for Vista / Windows 7

The laptop I was looking at is http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/hp-g61-410sa-04127309-pdt.html which to my uneducated eye looks pretty decent, however it looks like the processor is only 1.9 when it requires 2.0, how much of a problem is that likely to be?

Is the laptop any good basically?

Thanks for any replies as I know these threads can be a bit tiresome at times.

http://www.acerdirect.co.uk/GRADE_A1_-_Acer_Aspire_5735Z-344G32Mn_Laptop_A1-LX.ATL0X.015/version.asp

That's a Grade A1 'refurbished' laptop.  Got a different laptop from Acer Direct that was Grade A1 (for the missus) - basically it the box had been opened previously, the laptop hadn't even been used.

The spec of that one seems to match/beat the HP one is every department.

A lot of people don't like Acers though, although I've had no problems at all with them.  I'm using one, the missus is, and they've been excellent so far.  http://www.acerdirect.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_8735G_Laptop_LX.PHF02.086/version.asp that's the one the missus got (but got it for under £500).

Nothing wrong with Acer

Please dont buy computer related products from PC World, its not really the type of thing they specialise in.

that Acer is miles better than the underpowered HP machines. It has a celeron processor which should be avoided at all costs.

the only thing is the operating system, you really want windows 7, and want it to be 64 bit

Not arguing Laz - I don't know enough about it - but I thought we were still a year or two away from 64 bit being the way to go for most users? I know you get to use oodles more memory but I thought that was countered by the lack of 64-bit software & device drivers etc?

this looks pretty good as well - the processor is basically amd's version of the intel dual core processor for laptops...

you will need to get a decent windows 7 license for it though...

While we are on this subject....i have a latop which is about 18months old....recently it is shutting down by itself....you can hear the processor going mad....gets very noise..well nosie for a processor in my eyes..thne shuts down by its on accord.

Takes about 20-25mins before you can boot it back up again..if you try before it "tries" then stops and turns off again.

I'm guess the fan isn't working correctly?...but it iis a guess.  it is flat on a wooden desk top...would this affect it?

I have cleaned the fan..(wiped it from underneath)

Any ideas, advise.. help?
