Does 'American fridge freezer' just mean 'Big fridge freezer' or is there some nuance I'm missing.

It's the general use term for a side-by-side fridge freezer, as opposed to top/bottom. Big kitchens, more space, wider appliances. I doubt they call them American Fridge Freezers over there though.

Plus they've generally got a dispenser thingming on the freezer door wot gives you water and ice cubes and that.

In general not the capicity of the newer variants like in OP, but are quality bits of kit.
I have the stainless double and its a bitch to keep clean but aside from that no complaints at all.

Go for an American make as opposed to standard UK make wannabe.  The bits and bobs inside on the UK wannabes tend to be same as their standard fridges and can struggle.  US makes have been churned this size out for years. 

Can highly recommend Maytag/Admiral.. follow up service is excellent also.
