Joe Root Update.

He is fast running out of partners, (446/9) but he is on 166 not out, & has the WI field spread around the boundary.

Speculative one...

One of the Owners Group horses runs today. It's one of McCain's and has had only one run for the syndicate since two forgettable canters in France. That was in February in a bog. McCain has said in his updates to the syndicate that the horse needs firmer ground and he hopes it'll be better suited.

We waited and waited...

...it runs in the illustrious 8:10 at Chepstow and is called Bleu Et Or. McCain has secured the services of Fred Favourite, Wayno Hutcho, on top.

It's one of those spots where a lot of people who have small interests in a horse will be delighted to watch their horse run. The trainer has held it back for good ground and now had it, with a topjock on board. There's a chance it'll be running honestly today. The only thing better than backing a trying horse is backing one that didn't need to try. Let's be honest, this isn't that kind of race!

The bookies appear to have done something old fashioned and had a look at the card and formed their own view on the prices. This means we have a range and the biggest is Mr Choral at 7/1.

Recommend a £10 on the shnozzle for a bit of interest.

JE Root (Eng)    325
GS Ballance (Eng) 209
IR Bell (Eng) 155

after the 183*, helped substantially by horrible bowling today, and only ended when Anderson made a schoolboy error

one match to go.

The innings ended with Joe Root on 182 not out.

It ended in most peculiar fashion, when Jimmy Anderson declined to even attempt to make his ground, & was run out. Have to assume he did not realise the ball was being returned, he literally ambled down, & never even attempted to ground his bat. Root did not look best pleased.

Fingers crossed he has done enough.

Wm Hill reported a Trading Update today.

In brief, turnover was significantly up, but poor football returns, especially in that weekend in January, are said to be the reasons for the disappointing profits.

“After a weak January, we saw improved wagering trends over the remainder of the quarter. Online
wagering grew 20% in February and March, and 29% for the Cheltenham festival. Gross win margins were
below our expected trading range for what is typically a stronger quarter, impacted by – amongst other
things – our largest ever loss-making week in Week 3.
“In Retail, the underlying revenue trend remained resilient and we are on track to complete the Eclipse
gaming machine roll-out in Q2. Operating profit benefited from the changes we made to the staffing model
in April 2014 as well as from the reduction in costs driven by shop closures.
“As expected, Group operating profit was impacted by a £20m increase in gambling duties following the
introduction of POCT in December 2014 and the increase in the MGD rate in March 2015. However, we
are well positioned to benefit as the UK online market evolves following the introduction of POCT, with our
ongoing technology investments expected to benefit both product and customer experience and with a
substantial marketing commitment.
“Our international strategy continues to progress. In Australia, the migration of Sportingbet customers to
williamhill.com.au has been successfully completed, with over 95% of Sportingbet VIP clients transacting
on the site since launch and with both first time deposits and unique actives showing post-migration
increases against Sportingbet last year. William Hill US continues to perform strongly, with wagering on a
local currency basis 30% ahead of last year.
“Looking forward, as the end of the football season draws closer, we have not as yet made up the shortfall
arising from the £14m loss in Week 3 given the relatively weak first quarter sports betting margin. Outwith
sporting results, we are making good progress on our key projects for the year, including in-house
development of our responsive design front-end through Project Trafalgar, an enhanced bonus engine to
further increase the competitiveness of our proprietary Vegas casino platform and the completion of our
Eclipse machine roll-out in Retail.”

I don't believe McCain has a clue what he's got among his bumper horses. A lot start short, some are good, some are hopeless. Seems a proper guessfest to me.

A source says Wayne has been told to be keen early and see if anything wants to challenge.

I think "keen" might be an understatement. Jockey must be exhausted. Showed a bit at the end.

Yuk.

Gateshead are away at Barnet tomorrow in the last week of Conference Premier games, one in which a win will see Barnet take the only automatic promotion place to the Football League. Second place Bristol Rovers are only a point behind and are at home to lowly Alfreton, a game that Bristol are priced at 1/4 to win. With this setup I think that Barnet are just going to have to go for broke since Bristol are highly likely to bag 3 points.

Gateshead have decent away form this season, 7th in the league away from home and they're likely going to get chances on the break.

The game will be on BT Sport at 5.15 so should be a decent sweat in a high intensity game. It could well play out that Barnet scalp a couple early and their relatively stingy defence gets to park the bus but at 11s I think we've probably got enough wiggle room in the price for my first and probably only rec!

Rec £10 Gateshead to win at Barnet at 11/1 with BMU

He must have known that Fred was on as he managed to get three of his partners run-out.

Welcome in Daniel and gl.  Like the angle.  Silly season starts now on football with teams 'who have to win' going off crazy prices for the next few weeks.
