Thrillingly for them one of their staked players, Ben Jenkins has made the final
Over on www.thefirmpoker.com you can see my updates following Ben's progress over the past two days. Good player, nice guy and one of several I am rooting for today. Also, before I continue, special thanks to Supernova and Dan Morgan who have helped out, entirely voluntary, over the last two days on these updates. Very appreciated. Now then, on with the show.... Title: Re: GUKPT Walsall: The Final Post by: TightEnd on May 01, 2011, 11:03:45 AM So who are our finalists
Our chip leader is Simon Deadman (https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_M7mySuUsa6c/Tbx47_AoRVI/AAAAAAAARaw/087C_Fy00F8/IMG_6928.JPG) Simon broke through when he won the DTD Deepstack a few months ago having threatened to do so for several months previous, having struggled for many years since his work as a Macauley Culkin personal appearance substitute dried up. A prolific chip getter in the early stages of tournaments he ran so well in the last two levels of yesterday (winning every flip and showndown) that he is being co-opted onto the 2012 British Olympic relay team. Over and above that though he was already chip leader before then, and never looked like relinquishing his position. Has to be favourite today with his stack and front-running game Title: Re: GUKPT Walsall: The Final Post by: TightEnd on May 01, 2011, 11:06:51 AM Second in chips is Danny Toffel
(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_M7mySuUsa6c/Tbx42zUGYdI/AAAAAAAARao/XmUVZ0Z4M_c/IMG_6926.JPG) Toffster on blonde, Danny from Surrey is an avuncular presence on tables at events I cover, and has had several deep runs in GUKPTs and DTD major events recently. Moved through to a high chip count yesterday in two key pots, the second of which accounted for day one chip leader Steve Warburton. In a black mark against his name Danny told me that these updates are not as funny as the DTD Monte Carlo Updates. For that reason, and no other, I hope he has at least one bad beat today, but not one so severe as to ruin his chances as he would like to sponsor some updates. Go Danny! Title: Re: GUKPT Walsall: The Final Post by: TightEnd on May 01, 2011, 11:09:42 AM Third in chips is Ryan Spittles
(https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_M7mySuUsa6c/TbwMpz6cp8I/AAAAAAAARWg/auYmtx_Xt8Y/IMG_6883.JPG) Ryan is the newest, and probably plumpest, member of Team Sky Poker. "Scotty77" on blonde and a much respected member of the Sky Poker Community.Ryan has quite a game, modelled on his hero who he does not know, David Johnson. Many moves, much bluffage and a seriously at it image. Only has one gear, he's stuck in sixth. However to my reasonably untutored eye he looks a real one to watch, a natural talent that now has his breakthrough Title: Re: GUKPT Walsall: The Final Post by: TightEnd on May 01, 2011, 11:11:51 AM Fourth in chips is Ben Jenkins
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_M7mySuUsa6c/Tb0urtRjxwI/AAAAAAAARa8/RObFA_pMkmw/IMG_6889-1.JPG) Staked by www.thefirmpoker.com, Ben is from the North East and shares a house with Jack Ellwood. Was the short-stack of 65 returning yesterday and with infitie patience and much skill negotiated his way through to a run good period in the late stages. the Firm have identified another tremendous talent, much respected by his peers. Poor taste in scarves and suits though Title: Re: GUKPT Walsall: The Final Post by: TightEnd on May 01, 2011, 11:15:14 AM Fifth in chips is Martin Holmes
(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_M7mySuUsa6c/TbtC9u08fHI/AAAAAAAARVE/cKC-yqOEMcc/IMG_6864.JPG) Finally I have a lookalike for the teutonic Martin, which i will reveal later. It's ben bothering me for two days and came to me at 4am when I woke up with a start, wrote down the name and then settled back to a deep and far more contented sleep. What of Martin then? Martin is from the South Coast and has a string of final tables i n places as exotic as Brighton, Thanet and Luton in festivals over the past eighteen months. Martin has never been seen without raybans, which are attached to his face by thanks to an unfortunate experience with Evostik in 2003, when slightly worse for wear. Title: Re: GUKPT Walsall: The Final Post by: TightEnd on May 01, 2011, 11:19:06 AM Sixth in chips is Adrian Eley
(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_M7mySuUsa6c/Tbx1a4N2BCI/AAAAAAAARbE/ARZDYnSobvk/s576/IMG_6918.JPG) Adrian is from Shrewsbury. Er, that's it. So a story. Shrewsbury used to play at Gay Meadow a very picturesque ground at the side of a river. As assorted players in the lower divisions had a penchant for hoofing the ball over the side stand they lost a lot of balls, and money, to the water. So, about twenty five years ago they began to employ a little man on match days to sit in a coracle on the middle of the river and every time the ball got hoofed out he would row, collect the ball and save the club a fortune. Sadly Shrewsbury moved grounds in 2009. The coracle is now preserved at the National Football Museum in Preston. It is unknownwhat became of the man Title: Re: GUKPT Walsall: The Final Post by: TightEnd on May 01, 2011, 11:21:22 AM Seventh in chips is Craig Burgess
(https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_M7mySuUsa6c/TbwblHHgAhI/AAAAAAAARX0/3ujbRe5kllo/IMG_6898.JPG) A shortstack around the bubble, Craig negotiated that period and now makes his first ranking event final. Craig is from Worcester, the town in the UK most exposed to flooding. The relevance of that to the GUKPT final will only become clear later. Title: Re: GUKPT Walsall: The Final Post by: craigbetts on May 01, 2011, 11:22:52 AM For the third day running, GL to Simon Deadman. (as if he needs it!)
Excellent bio's tighty!! Title: Re: GUKPT Walsall: The Final Post by: scotty77 on May 01, 2011, 11:23:22 AM cheers everyone for all the updates. surely there is at least one better pic out there ty ty ty!!!!
Title: Re: GUKPT Walsall: The Final Post by: TightEnd on May 01, 2011, 11:24:29 AM Eighth in chips is Nick Hicks
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_M7mySuUsa6c/Tbx1epm88CI/AAAAAAAARac/3pEjPloPHjg/s512/IMG_6919.JPG) In controversial circumstances "Redbull" on blonde recently usurped Julian Thew for the title of "The nicest Man in Poker". Nick is a gent. From Nottingham and a DTD regular and past DTD Deepstack winner. Very very good game too, and will be a right menace where he to accumulate some chips from here. Title: Re: GUKPT Walsall: The Final Post by: TightEnd on May 01, 2011, 11:27:32 AM Shortstack is Alan Mansbridge
(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_M7mySuUsa6c/Tbx1l9ES6iI/AAAAAAAARbA/Yb7yW4NfQHA/IMG_6923.JPG) Alan recently concluded a lucrative career as Peter Cushing's stunt double at which he appeared at Hammer House of Horror fairs worldwide. Alan is another nice chap, polite and patient and will be looking for that double up to get him in the hunt for the big money here. My research tells me that this is Alan's first festival cash since 2007. His crypt was locked for three years, I gather Title: Re: GUKPT Walsall: The Final Post by: TightEnd on May 01, 2011, 11:31:27 AM cheers everyone for all the updates. surely there is at least one better pic out there ty ty ty!!!! An artist can only work with what appears on the cnavas before him. Good luck today. Title: Re: GUKPT Walsall: The Final Post by: mondatoo on May 01, 2011, 11:31:58 AM Is Danny Toffel the love child of Jack Nicholson ?
Also, pffft at Nick taking Julian's nice guy crown, I once saw him spill red wine all over some guy with a white shirt on then laugh in the guys face and walk off, part off that story may or may not be true. PS Someone teach me how to do little writing please. Title: Re: GUKPT Walsall: The Final Post by: Doobs on May 01, 2011, 11:44:39 AM Good luck Craig.

Title: Re: GUKPT Walsall: The Final Post by: cambridgealex on May 01, 2011, 12:54:15 PM Eighth in chips is Nick Hicks (https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_M7mySuUsa6c/Tbx1epm88CI/AAAAAAAARac/3pEjPloPHjg/s512/IMG_6919.JPG) In controversial circumstances "Redbull" on blonde recently usurped Julian Thew for the title of "The nicest Man in Poker". Nick is a gent. From Nottingham and a DTD regular and past DTD Deepstack winner. Very very good game too, and will be a right menace where he to accumulate some chips from here. HE'S ONLY 25!!! Also, pffft at Nick taking Julian's nice guy crown, I once saw him spill red wine all over some guy with a white shirt on then laugh in the guys face and walk off, part off that story may or may not be true. The red wine bit is almost certainly true. He always has a glass whilst playing. How can he be 25?! Struggled today, got smashed up for 5 hours by the eventual champion, who was just golden today. The action was so ridiculously slow it was hard work. A 4th to go with the 2nd in Coventry last year so hopefully a trophy has to come sooner rather than later and I thought I had a great spot today but the cards never came and could do nothing with the cards I was dealt!!! Tournament was a joy to play as usual and see you in Luton. I'll be in touch to sort something out for a future live update probably Luton maybe a plan. Cheers all Title: Re: GUKPT Walsall: The Final Post by: SuuPRlim on May 01, 2011, 11:58:49 PM Well Played to everyone on the final table, and congratulations to Alan Mansbridge for winning what many seasoned pro's would love to have on their mantlepiece, a GUKPT trophy.
Whereas I really wanted simon to win from 3way (and my friends Nick and Ben - one of whom i had a decent financial interest in would have like to see them do well as well) I thought simon prolly played the best poker of the field and is well deserving of a title imo. But I have a huge amount of respect for the "nonprofessional" recreational player, who ponies up the £1,000 or binks a satellite and sits down with players like Ben and Simon and takes them on, very few other activities would see an amateur take on very talented professionals and this is one of the things that makes poker such a great sport IMO Fair to say he prolly hit a few cards along the way but he handled himself very well from what I saw, and as disappointed as I am that Simon couldn't take the title, I am very pleased for him, and we should all be congratulating him as it's a fantastic achievement, one of which I am jealous off. Excellent post. +1 to the congrats for the winner..... awesome achievement and from Tighty's post seems like a really genuine guy. Felt a bit sick for Simon, but at the end of the day reputation and bankroll both well bolstered, so all's good. WP to Nick and Scotty too. Title: Re: GUKPT Walsall: The Final Post by: easypickings on May 02, 2011, 12:29:54 AM Absolutely fantastic updates guys, it's an amazing effort over the three long days.
To be honest, my general observation sometimes on Blonde is that it's easy to belittle someone who people feel hasn't played "techincally" well. Whilst noone would mean it in a negative way at all, it would be understandable for the player in question to feel a bit offended. It’s sometimes difficult to see the thin line between people simply observing that they thought some of the plays were bad, and people acting with disdain towards the actual person. In short, it's easy to see why he might take it personally. To be honest, I felt this far more strongly in the DTD update where the guy was criticised for folding AK face up. However, I think we all on Blonde would hope that anyone at the final table might read the comments, and should probably act assuming that they will. I don't mean it at all as a criticism of Blonde, as I'm absolutely sure this would be the case on any forum, and definitely way more so on something like two plus two. In fact, I’m sure it would happen on a forum built around any shared interest at all, not just poker. I just think this is such a positive and friendly forum, that we can extend it to everyone. I think what makes poker so much fun is that people will come to it from all different angles, and with different levels of experience. Many many congrats to him, it's a great achievement. He must have got lucky to win the torunament, but only because anyone who wins a tournament does, but he must also have played with a fair amount of skill along the way. Poker is made by its stories. To be honest, I think us young 'uns (I'll knock off a few years and include myself!) should realise that we actually have a very boring story. We have not worked many hours in a proper job in our lives; we have got lucky along the way; we have put in hundreds of hours of playing online, so much that it would be tough for us not to be at least decent at the game; we probably don't realise how lucky we are, and the amounts of money involved don’t make much of an interesting difference in our lives. This guy will have played a tiny fraction of the bank of hands that we’ve played; he’s driven the cab he works in during the week to Walsall, had the balls to put down a grand of his money, held his nerve, played well, albeit unconventionally sometimes, and scooped the lot. That’s a great story, hats off to him. Title: Re: GUKPT Walsall: The Final Post by: mouth on May 02, 2011, 12:31:56 AM Like you said Tighty, we don't mean offence by our comments, it's because we're passionate about supporting our friends. But yes, congrats :) Ofc Blonde members and friends/contemporaries of members will always be railed and supported more than relative unknowns. I'm sure he got much more support than Ben did on the London Cabbies Chat Board, swings and roundabouts. Title: Re: GUKPT Walsall: The Final Post by: Djinn on May 02, 2011, 01:19:39 AM Ah Stu, you should have been a politician.
I just want to add my agreement when you all note the sheer hours put in here by Tighty and Supernova - I was sub-ing for Peter Leeper and haven't covered a GUKPT in ages - now that there's a double flight groundhog Day 1 it's pretty intense. Also DMorgan is a gent, probably the only player who's said they're going to help all day, and actually did. PS He's still in the £100 Bounty Tournament at time of posting, with 5 left. Let's just say there's reason to be hopeful. Congrats all finalists I spoke to today, a pleasure meeting you all. +1 Title: Re: GUKPT Walsall: The Final Post by: DMorgan on May 02, 2011, 03:51:18 AM Absolutely fantastic updates guys, it's an amazing effort over the three long days. That’s a great story, hats off to him. Thank you Stuart you saved me a lot of time and effort by posting this and you have been a shade more diplomatic than I would have been. It appalls and saddens me sometimes when I read a bad critique of a persons play by another person when that person is clearly doing it to try and make himself look good. The criticiser is also missing a ton of information, we dont know what he has locked in from 3 days of playing these same guys etc etc he just wades in and slags him because he makes a play he doesn't like but wtf has it to do with them he's paid his money he can play however he likes. I also get sick of this theory that if you have grey hair and dont wear a hoody you cannot play poker (say all the young guns booing from the rail after busting early day 1 when getting looked up 6 bet shoving with J3). Maybe with the poker coaching these sites should add humility and manners on to the syllabus. Having played with the winner and chatted with him at breaks etc I found him to be a fairly decent player, very analytical, quite composed but most of all a very nice guy and when I saw he made the final I obvioulsy put a monkey on him to win with Trigg. He did something we all failed at and won a GUK title so hats off to him and I hope he sticks it in the doubters eye by winning another title soon. London cabbie Andy Mansbridge has beaten a field of 172 players to take the title at GUKPT Walsall, along with top prize of £50,000! Having been the lowest stack in the tournament the night before, he staged the most dramatic comeback ever seen on the tour to climb from the very bottom of the chip counts to end up as the last man standing. “I hadn’t booked a hotel – I wasn’t expecting to make it,” admitted the soft-spoken poker enthusiast, as he was waiting to collect his winnings. Happy to be improving and taking on the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour in the future, he posed for photos in his cab before driving it back to London where he plans to play the very next day. He beat Martin Holmes heads up after nearly six hours on the final table, which also featured Nick Hicks, Simon Deadman and Ryan Spittles. FULL REPORT: Mansbridge the Cabbie Comeback King Beats 127-Strong Field (and Two Suited Jokers) The £1,000 GUKPT Walsall Main Event started twice on Friday 29th April. The first flight took their seats to the incongruous strains of the Royal Wedding music. There were 97 runners in all playing at midday, including Dave Colclough, Mike Hill, Paul Jackson, Sunny Chattha, Allan Mclean and GUKPT sponsored pro Stuart Rutter. Rutter’s friend Ben Jenkins was also playing Day 1a, and they were noticeably more sharply dressed than normal. It turns out that side action is underway on the circuit revolving around which of the two will make the top three in a £100+ buy-in tournament first (and only when one has done it can they retire the suits and ties). While Rutter narrowly failed to cash, Jenkins made it all the way to the final table, winning £6,450 for his 7th place finish, and nearly winning his bet too. The second flight starting at 6pm on the same day attracted 75 players, including many previous GUKPT champions. Among them were Jerome Bradpiece, Mike Ellis and Praz Bansi who all made deep runs into Day 2. The latter especially was responsible for some of the most spectacular pots (and outdraws) and came close to making back-to-back final tables, finishing 15th winning £2,150. Eight levels were played by each starting group, and when the dust had settled a total of 65 players remained. The biggest stacks emerging from the two flights belonged to Daniel Stanway and Steven Warburton, both just shy of 100,000. Day 2 combined the field and quickly dispersed it – the eliminations came thick and fast until the three-table stage; with the prize money in sight play slowed for a level or so. The leaders at the end of the first day did not make the final table - however four of the eventual finalists started the day in the top ten and never looked back. Once he’d reached the giddy heights of the chip lead, Simon Deadman proved difficult to knock back down. He was responsible for many an elimination late on Day 2, wielding his stack like a sledgehammer, taking on short stacks without fear of a real dent. Picking up a good number of hands didn’t hurt – in his own words, “I’m just a card rack.” Card rack or not, the accomplished Deadman was firmly in control after the bubble burst (Sen Man Ung finishing in unpaid 18th spot) and ended up leading the final table when Day 3 started with a 666,900 stack. Just prior to this, Greg Hunt had busted out in 19th place, disappointed to have just missed out on a cash, but having won the GUKPT Online Shoal Survivor contest by being the last online qualifier standing in the tournament. He won a £1,500 GUKPT tournament prize package to spend playing at other stops on the Tour. The final table began at a sprint, with Nick Hicks enjoying the first of what were to be multiple double-ups while Craig Burgess ran nines into Martin Holmes’ queens preflop to finish 9th. Thereafter, however, it ran like London buses: quickly, efficiently and with regular progression. Just kidding – three whole levels passed before Adrian Eley, Ben Jenkins and Ryan Spittles exited in quick succession. Eley and Jenkins were shorter stacks, losing preflop confrontations (Jenkins actually to Spittles), but Spittles himself ran one of the boldest bluffs of the final table – called by an equally fearless Alan Mansbridge. Mansbridge called all three streets with Kc-8c (top pair on the flop) and although the turn brought an ace and the river paired threes, he found the call for over 200,000 when Spittles gave it his last shot all-in with 9c-7c – no pair, nine-high. This postflop tenacity characterised Mansbridge’s rise from the short stack at the start of the day to the chip lead five-handed. Fighting through several all-ins and hairy moments as the aggressive short-stack, Nick Hicks finally exited in 5th place (£10,320) when he lost a race with AQ vs. the JJ of Martin Holmes. Danny Toffel, who’d once built ramparts of chips, finally exited, forced to move all in by his shortness of stack. He won £13,330 for his efforts and 4th place finish. Three handed, the final table reverted to doubling the all in short stack each time he was at risk. While Alan Mansbridge sat on his million chips, Simon Deadman and Martin Holmes passed a half-million chunk of chips back and forth no fewer than three times. In each instance Deadman had the best hand when the money went in preflop (two dominating aces and on 88 vs. A3) but only won when he was all in. In his final hand, Deadman threebet all in over the top of Alan Mansbridge who took a long, hard thought time to make the call with A9. Deadman’s KQ suited failed to get there after an intriguing 7-J-T flop, and he finished 3rd, taking home £21,930. Heads up, Mansbridge had the chip advantage, and one hand turned it into an insurmountable one for his opponent Martin Holmes. The bare minimum of chips had gone in until the turn of a Kh-Th-Jd-Kc board, when Holmes’ check-raise prompted a threebet, shove and call, Holmes’ Ks-4d failing to improve beyond the flopped straight (Qs-9d) of Mansbridge. Now with a 4:1 lead, Mansbridge picked off Holmes with K-7 vs. A-J, spiking a seven which ended the tournament, awarding the £34,830 runner-up prize to Holmes and £50,000 to the London cabbie who came back the day before without bothering to extend his hotel booking, so low was his stack. Making the final, he still felt no pressure. “I wasn’t nervous – I hadn’t got enough chips to be nervous!” By the time he’d gone from ten big blind short stack to second place, momentum carried him calmly onwards to the win. Expect to see a newly-confident Alan Mansbridge gracing the London clubs in which he cut his teeth, and perhaps at the next GUKPT event – the Brighton and Dundee Summer Series running from the 11th-15th of May. I obv looked my own comments, 1 of which was particularly negative against the guy, but then another which was balanced too. I also tried to see it from this guys point of view to see how I would feel, and I have to admit it would probably have got to me a little. But, this is an update thread for a community, and there is always going to be people taking sides for people within or close to that community, and cheer along their friends, of which at this time, the GUKPT Wasall champion isnt (but hopefully will be). That is a simple fact of life. I hate John Terry, cant stand the guy when he pulls on that Chelsea shirt, and I often sing songs against him and his team, but you will never see me boo him in an England shirt! Thats the way life is at times. OK this is poker, not football, and there is no need for the "football comparison", or is there..................... The updater is there to do a job, to set the scene, build up a picture with his words for us the followers to join in. There is inevitably going to be a "hero" and a "villain", and even when the hero 6 bet jams J3o into the villains AA, and gets there, he will never be called a donkey, it will always be "brave", and the bravado about "calling all in with 1 pair" will also go on against the "villain". So is Tighty to blame for setting a platform for us to rail with interest? I mean, you could argue he creates the villains and hero's, to a degree, maybe they self select but then get reported that way. The answer of course id ABSOLUTELY NOT! This is what makes it for entertainment. We need the glossy sheen to the HH's otherwise we might as well all just follow our buddies chip counts on twitter. I agree with Stu, but I also think people need to take a slightly wider view about the updates, how they are set up, how people are likely to react to their Hero's getting beat, and also the virtual world which it sits upon! When the railer said "DIAGF" to the villain that knocked out his mate, I dont think he jumped straight in his car to drive to the nearest chipshop wholesalers! OK, so the actual literal translation of those words is pretty horrific taken out of context, but so are many things in life, so put those words back into context, understand what that means to a 22 year old and move on. Finally, if I was our champ today, reflecting on this, Id be thinking who should I be more annoyed with, a forum full of people I dont know nor care about anti-railing me and my game, or my mates, distracting me with negativity when I am playing the biggest game of my life for a years salary? And if I was in that spot, I know who id be more frustrated with, and I would have turned off my phone and got on with winning. And I am also sure that on reflection, as he wakes up this morning to his fry up and mug of tea (or coffee and croissant - who knows his preference), as he sits there rubbing his money on his titties, calling his drug dealer and perusing the local hookers on the internet, he wont give a f+@k what blonde poker thinks, but will be planning how big his celebration will be (the last sentence is only for people under 25!) Hopefully, our champ will open a blonde account, like many have before, and become a part of this community, but you know what, if he doesnt, im not sure it'll ruin his day, and if he does, we as a community will welcome him too! (as it turns out he just happened to be the "villain" of the pantomime) 2) shaun handled himself with about as much class as a drunk beetle, was berating/belittling people himself showed no humility and was just generally a bit of a cock imo. whereas from what i saw in walsall and the impression conveyed by the updates Alan Mansbridge handled himself with perfect class and was a gentleman. I dont care about poker ability i'd like to see the latter person win at anything in life Title: Re: GUKPT Walsall: The Final Post by: SuuPRlim on May 02, 2011, 11:47:50 AM Makes me wonder if Cody didn't win the 10-4 hand will ppl berate his play then? lol he has had PLENTY of stick for that hand. PLENTY, even he knows it was a hella spew but luckily 5 of a row beat a one pair kings :) luckily for him what happened after was an epic final table performance, and because he handles himself so well (and played sick) people are focusing on that rather than one "marginal" hand he played previous to it. Had jake come on the forums and been saying "well I was miles better than this guy and outpayed this guy with this hand, and stfu you never even played a 5k" he would have come into a lot more stick imo. Not a single one of you. A little later once the dust has settled that tends to be the feeling that surfaces. C'est la vie, you accept that you were unlucky and you wish the guy good luck because showing a bit of humility costs nothing. I think that people would do well to remember that these updates are done by one guy and an assortment of volunteers. We don't have time or the man power to do all of the background checks on people. He came into the final as the short stack by a fair way so he didn't get much coverage and thats how it'll always be. As far as we knew he was just a middle of the road guy that probably won a satellite to get there and had the run of his life to win and deny our friends their shot at winning a UK major. Thats the way it was reported because in most cases that'll be what happened. We only got a chance to talk to him afterwards and it turns out that against the odds he's an extraordinarily humble guy with a very unusual story which naturally endeers people to him and then the reporters get the flack. As Guy posted, there are heroes and there are villains. It just so happened that for Alan Mansbridge he landed on a table full of heroes that had a lot of support on blonde (Deadman, Hicks, Jenkins, Toffel, Spittles) so he was always destined to be the villain. As Guy also pointed out, this is not the BBC. We're not hired by Grosvenor to be impartial. There is no attempt to sugar coat the fact that the updates will be skewed in favour of the players that the most vocal/active Blonde members are supporting. This is not a £10FO at your local, this is a UK major and you have to accept that when you enter these tournaments and make deep runs there will be media scrutiny. I'm sure Alan Mansbridge is old enough and wise enough (in before omg why are you bashing the old guys) to see once Richard explained to him that the comments that might cause offence are not born out of any hatred for him, maybe just a little over-enthusiastic support for the other players. If he's a london cabbie then he cetainly doesn't need wrapping up in cotton wool (or £50 notes as would be the case now). Title: Re: GUKPT Walsall: The Final Post by: smashedagain on May 02, 2011, 01:13:58 PM calling his drug dealer and perusing the local hookers on the internet, he wont give a f+@k what blonde poker thinks, but will be planning how big his celebration will be (the last sentence is only for people under 25!) happy to help out here alan if needs be. the whole point is this is now the 2nd time in a couple of months that i know of (shaun king was the last one) where people have been upset by the members of this forum having a go at them. it always happens deep in the tourney and no matter if they are the hero or villan you have either played well or run well to get there. its a massive achievement and someones does not deserve to have there big day ruined by peolpe who dont even now him giving him abuse. this is even more disrespectfull than the idiots from this forum going on the mums net site and abusing young mums. Jase this is quite ironic when you're one of the biggest trolls on updates/threads etc. Those who know you know you're joking but a casual passer by like Mr Mansbridge would not. you know when people on here start saying "wait a minute. the nits are winning everything" you know i'm gonna jump ship and start fighting for titaniumbeans cause. sorry for thinking its all a big joke but this site keeps me off facebook. ;) i hope guys like Mr. Mansbridge keep taking down tourneys so i can keep poking it in peoples eye. simons day will come again and again and again because he plays so well. anyone who said ul the big one is just round the corner or a title will be yours soon needs to look at simons hendonmob. dtd deepstack was an awesome performance by him but he has been doing it month in month out for some time. wish i knew what the opposite of varience was because all i can think to use for it at the moment is "plays well" Title: Re: GUKPT Walsall: The Final Post by: DMorgan on May 02, 2011, 01:26:48 PM Jason, you've been less than complimentary in the past about people running good against you at crucial points in big tournaments, especially the irish open sole survivor
You've not done anything to upset me, always been a gent when I've met you at live events just a bit of a keyboard warrior. But it really doesn't suit you to be pretending to fight the good fight all the time because if we're honest if all of these "great stories" were repeated over and over again all of us that play professionally would be pretty broke pretty quick Title: Re: GUKPT Walsall: The Final Post by: smashedagain on May 02, 2011, 01:43:45 PM Jason, you've been less than complimentary in the past about people running good against you at crucial points in big tournaments, especially the irish open sole survivor dan i've never once slagged rob sherwood off for the QQ v AQ hand as i get on with rob and am privey to the way paddy power messed him about over the deal. not really sure i've ever posted about beats either coz my attitude is always if i was a head when the dough goes in i cant have done much wrong. if you can post a couple of instances were i've slagged people off i will gladly pay for tightys next blog again. 1 condition is you cant use the miss nutt example coz she never beat me in a hand and i only had a pop coz she left the table using the c and f word when some guy got lucky. she is now a close friend and often tells me she loves my posts on blonde. and it had nothing to do with me putting her in the following deepstack to say sorry. You've not done anything to upset me, always been a gent when I've met you at live events just a bit of a keyboard warrior. I completely agree that for the longevity of the game we could probably do with more Alan Mansbridges winning majors but depending on who is saying it, this can mean completely different things When inexperienced/recreational players say that its 'good for the game' they mean that it creates good stories and sees his family well and shines a positive light on the game in the eyes of those outside poker. When professional players say that its 'good for the game' that Alan wins and not Simon the statment tends to be out of self interest because the game becomes ever so slightly more lucrative because (a) More inexperienced players are likekly to play these tournaments because they think they have a shot (b) The pros are more likely to see at least some of that £50k again if Alan wins than if Simon does (unless some wedding cake gets donated to Blonde of course ;)) I dunno, maybe you and lildave are different creatures but I can safely say that for the vast majority of pros they are more happy to see Alan win for reasons of self interest than because its a feel-good story and I don't deny that I'm one of them. Minus the 2-3% of the field that are playing purely for fun and are well aware they have very little shot at going deep in the tournament, everyone thinks that they are better than average against the field and that they have a good shot to make some money in live tournaments otherwise they wouldn't play. Even when you're just on a tournament break and you tell people about hands (not you specifically i'm talking poker players in general) its perfectly natural to accuse people of making bad plays and it doesn't make me or anyone else a bad person for doing it, but saying that you never do is just looking at yourself through rose tinted glasses imo well done last night and luke too. ;) Cheers :) I eagerly await the addition on my hendon mob page so you'll acknowledge my existence next time I see you :P Title: Re: GUKPT Walsall: The Final Post by: DMorgan on May 02, 2011, 02:25:01 PM If Gukpt Walsall is a "major", how many majors are in poker? 20+ in UK? 50+ in europe? 100+ in world? I guess not Its obviously a shame that his day was tainted a bit by this thread but personally I'm a believer that freedom of speech is far greater than censorship for the sake of one party that might be upset. These are the blond poker updates whose target audience is blonde forum members, otherwise they wouldn't be done! I think its also worth remembering that if Alan comes fifth, nobody cares about this thread and the potential upset because nobody interviews him and nobody finds out what a nice guy he is and how he was misrepresented in this thread. That is purely a symptom of man power and resources. Richard does an excellent job of providing these updates completely free of charge to the viewing public. If you want interviews with all of the players, background stories etc so that nobody is misrepresented in these updates ever again then pull out your cheque books folks Title: Re: GUKPT Walsall: The Final Post by: iRaise on May 02, 2011, 02:38:58 PM Not sure if its been said or not, but all the poker pro's are criticised and it makes them better for it, (if they adapt or take note of it) he himself said he is trying to improve, and what better way than being told by people much better than him he is playing bad? agreed nobody likes to be told their an idiot, and especially without the ability to defend themselves like im assuming he has, but if he wants to improve or wants to take poker more seriously, he is going to have to deal with a lot of people telling him he is an idiot when he has outdrawn them or made a hero call with third pair cos he had a feeling. im not saying that he should be criticised, and its probably wrong in doing so, but if he wants to enter the poker world, he needs thicker skin! i hope this comes out the way im thinking it as i dont want to offend anyone!

Being bias is normal in such a situation. But we need to appreciate no one player "deserves" it more than any other. A lot of people say that a player deserves to win and so when the "villain" gets lucky or whatever there seems to be some injustice taking place. The randomness of a tournament and the variance in poker don't recognise who deserves to win most because nobody deserves to win most. If you pay your 1k and sit down to play you deserve it as much as the next guy. So rankles me when some random is demonised for the crime of hitting flops. On this occasion some old cabbie has driven up to the event and paid his dollar to sit down and play some cards on his day off. He hot-stepped through the whole field and used his puncher's chance to take it down against much better players. I think he deserves it.
Thought the updates were of a good standard as usual. Title: Re: GUKPT Walsall: The Final Post by: DMorgan on May 02, 2011, 04:19:39 PM hehe with so many break ups and make ups on the last few pages I think all this needs now is a link to the Blondenders thread and we're done

I was contemplating in volunteering, if needed, for future ones but after seeing the aftermath of this one, might have to reconsider. Shame really. Once again, CHEERS ALL for the up dates. why not? Why not indeed, these event's are also about teamwork IMO. The updater's important roles are to get the info on the hands, the pictures, the blind levels, the chip counts etc onto the forum, to do this this some people like for example me at this event just run around to get as much of this as they can and don't have time to sit down and post much anyway especially on day 1 which is quite frantic when the day1b players begin and day 1a are still playing. Hand analysis/discussion can be done by those reading the threads, the above can't so please reconsider, likewise anyone else who is thinking of volunteering, all help would be welcome I'm sure to make Tighty's job easier, even down to grabbing the rest of the team the occasional tea, coffee, water, headache tablets etc and of course the news that there is some of the buffet left if anyone wants seconds. ;) Every little helps, so please reconsider! Title: Re: GUKPT Walsall: The Final Post by: Skgv on May 02, 2011, 07:53:00 PM Absolutely fantastic updates guys, it's an amazing effort over the three long days. Havnt posted on here for a while but now an then you will get someone posting something worthy of a comment an in this case stu you are a legend....To be honest, my general observation sometimes on Blonde is that it's easy to belittle someone who people feel hasn't played "techincally" well. Title: Re: GUKPT Walsall: The Final Post by: action man on May 02, 2011, 08:44:58 PM the update threads should be locked after the result. Title: Re: GUKPT Walsall: The Final Post by: MC on May 03, 2011, 09:28:39 AM Meh, I think it's natural to think the person/people who play the best deserve to win.
Title: Re: GUKPT Walsall: The Final Post by: MANTIS01 on May 03, 2011, 11:34:12 AM People who play well increase their equity slightly in a tournament. But the equity figure doesn't have any compassion towards the most deserving players in the field. It is what it is. Anybody who wins a tournament will win flips etc so I don't think any 53%-47% coup has a rightful and just winner. You can certainly have a personal opinion about who you would like to win but the nature of the game is clinical and mathematical not romantic. At the weekend I had a big bet on a horse. It lead all the way round. It really deserved to win. It didn't.

Please don't get me wrong here folks. I have said on this thread and elsewhere how well and hard the up daters work and I was actually at Walsall at the w-end to witness this! (railing, not playing). My point was that it was a shame to see ANY critiscm of their work, whether it was 'tongue in cheek' or not. Then the aftermath on this thread regarding the winner's merits were IMO uncalled for on THIS thread. Perhaps another debate thread could of been started for this. Perhaps I am not tuned into how this forum operates yet. Anyway, I will consider helping out at future events if need be......even if it is just the drinks carrier! lol. It's not the most romantic way of looking at it, but actually there will never have been a tournament that anyone has ever deserved to win. Simon Deadman may well have played the best poker of anyone over the weekend- he's obviously a incredibly talented player, and really impressed me in the short space of time I played with him before I donated my chips to him. However, he did not get less than he deserved, but far more. Why? Because however well he played, no one could play so well in a poker tournament to deserve a 2600% ROI. Whenever people have an opinion as to whether the person lifting the trophy deserves it or not, it really makes no sense. If Phil Ivey had flown into Birmingham airport for the weekend, made the short journey up the M6, played at the top of his game, and ultimately lifted the trophy, even he would not have deserved it. A far more boring way of looking at it I know, but a true story. Title: Re: GUKPT Walsall: The Final Post by: Marky147 on May 03, 2011, 02:45:31 PM Cliffs:
