Bought a newspaper today
«
on:
June 27, 2017, 03:31:55 PM »
Arrived early for a meeting and thought I'd sit in a café with a paper - used to be a regular thing but haven't bought a paper for perhaps 5 years.
Can't remember what I used to pay but £1.60 today surprised me. Worth every penny though and a very pleasurable experience, might do it again.

Ha, although I'm a champagne socialist -The Telegraph, it has the only cryptic crossword I could ever do from the big papers

I got the Guardian the other day for the first time in ages. Think it was £2 and there was barely anything in it. Maybe my memories are wrong, but it felt like the content was around halved.

Sports and Biz sections of the Telegraph much the same but, now you mention it, I think the main part is probably reduced but not so much you'd feel too hard done by

The sports and business sections were definitely smaller. Maybe the Telegraph isn't so affected as I got that on the plane out.
I haven't compared the two, but it seems there is a lot more on the free Guardian website than in the paper. Not sure that is great business strategy if true.

Now to conflate this thread with the politics thread.
Not always in tune with his fairly extreme libertarian views but like the cut of Jacob Rees Mogg's jib.
A letter in the Telegraph today, from Lord Grantley sings his praises for leadership of the Tory party. Part of the eulogy to his merits reads:
"...admired by the population at large"
Reckon he might get like a 10% recognition factor if the pop at large were shown a mug shot and, of those, shirley at least 50% are gonna dismiss the 'posh twat'
What do these Lords know ? Ban 'em

I still love reading the paper. The best is on holibobs. Cabbage by the pool all day reading cover to cover in the sun with a cooling beverage. Everyone's like 'where you get the paper' 'can I read the paper after you''. English paper is like the holy grail in foreign lands.

Really can't see the appeal of newspapers these days - on Sky News when they do tomorrow's front pages at 10.30 the front page of the Guardian will just be stories that I've already read on the website and it's not even tomorrow yet.

Holidays are pretty much the only time I ever get a paper, just to see what's going on back in Blightly. Not sure I'll bother this year though, I think I'd rather not know.

I wouldn't read papers if they were delivered free.

You are completely correct. But there's just something nice about sitting by the pool, or having a lazy sunday morning with the paper. I mean I ignore 95% of everything in them, but there's usually a story I wouldn't have read if I hadn't have read it in a paper. Online I just read what I go to a site to read. A paper there's lots of other stuff i'll read in general. Mainly because if i've paid £2 I want to get my moneys worth
