Title: New Years Resolutions
Post by: cambridgealex on December 29, 2012, 03:30:38 PM
I thought it would be good to have a thread for everyones resolutions, and then in 12 months time we can revisit and see how epically we've all failed...

Poker and non-poker stuff...

This time last year I said I was going to invest time, money and effort into qualifying for one of the big UK poker tours. Sadly I never got any further than looking at Satellite schedules and the idea was soon forgotten. So for next year, the plan is to do exactly what I didn't manage/really attempt and qualify.

I put my 2012 hopes in an envelope sealed it and will be opening it on NYD. If I remember kids did ones aswell and I think we chose 3 or 5 items.

I remember 2  of mine (both happened) no idea what else I put or what kids put!

Can't wait!

Read "The Mental Games of Poker"
Less sessions online where I play "for another half hour" just to get back to quits and end up doing a couple of buyins due to bad play (happened to much this year)
Play a DTD Deepstack

Lose 2 stone, (Currently at 14st 5oz)

Quit eating 6 packs of biscuits a week

Stick to low limit sports trading and not blowing my cash on shitty Blackjack full stop! (lost count how many times I went busto wanting a quick go)

Poker-wise

1 - Stop lurking on here and post more. Read the PHA threads, contribute and learn from responses.
2 - Play at least 1 MTT a week live locally.
3 - Use strict BR management to play Omaha cash online. Making sure I am not playing tired/tilted/bored to ensure i cut out mistakes as much as possible
4 - Improve my 'mental' side of the game
5 - Make another APAT final table
6 - Attend DTD for a deepstack.

Life -

1 - Try and be as goo a brother/son/friend as I can for all those that need me
2 - Progress in management structure at work while..
3 - Gain qualifications in something that i actually like doing (Multimedia journalism)
4 - Attend at least 5 Middlesbrough away games (starting 1st Jan away at Derby UTB)

Read more poker hand analysis
Read more book pokers
Play live at least twice a month
Have 4 figures in at least 2 sites
Book Vegas for 2014 (40th.)
Play DTD deepstack
Win live tournament
Make day 2 of APAT

Life-

Win £1m+ work contract
Finish work around house
Read 12 books
Get a iPad for me and kids
Eat breakfast everyday
Save 10% of bonus every month

Poker

Have my first calender year as a pro end in £40k+ profit
Play as many live tourns, through selling packages or satelliting in, as possible, winning a 5 figure sum in £
Have my BRM online set to no less than 600 buy ins, and try to clear 50 tournaments a night for 260 days a year (5 days a week)
Structure my play online professionally and always be very comfortable in every grind.

Life

Lose about 8 stone and get myself very fit to play some outfield football for a Sunday team. This is for September, so the start of next season. If not 8 stone, enough so that I can play without huffing and puffing too much.
Train 4 times a week at the gym or the park.
Eat more healthy foods.
Do some groundwork into a possible back up career to poker for the long term. No idea what really.

And most importantly across both spectrums I want to be a complete machine in money management and in avoiding the evil spew.

Poker:

Do a lot more coaching this year/review of hand histories
Discuss hands with team eureka during and after onlone sessions
Play my best more often. Too many times on session I feel like I lose focus/concentration
Win a ukipt
Play an ept/WPT (national will do)
Make another deep run in a bracelet event
Make the antes in the main

Non poker
Find more of a balance with poker/work and life
Lose weight and eat healthier. Better meals. Less snacking. No late night eating
Play 5 a side Footie to regain fitness
Join 11 a side local team for September
Have more social nights out, not just poker. Pool, karaoke and meals out

Play more, still undecided on which type to concentrate on, I get fed up with them all after a bad run but think I need to concentrate on either cash, sng's or mtt's for a while
Play live at least once a week
Try and qualify for a DTD event

Non Poker

Lose some weight
Join my local camera club
Crack on with some tv series I have lined up

2012

Joined blonde
Created a diary of all my exploits, poker and life - http://blondepoker.com/forum/index.php?topic=56559.0
Started the online grind - binkmepls
Got a new grind PC and sick chair
Pleno offered staking, still going, currently in mu, but not a lot
Been between 25 and 10nl all year, now beating 10nl really well and should be moving up shortly
Not been very diligent with records however I 'think':
        Won decent in live comps
        Lost little online mtt's
        Lost little online cash
        Won a little live cash
Improved un-measurably through online 6max cash grind
Studied a lot, analyzed a little

Won at my job
Lost at relationship - might be a longterm win, sample size is too small
BE at family life, need to put more effort in next year
Lost with Car
Won at nights out
Lost at keeping fit

2013

Get through 25nl, 50nl, and have a 100k graph of winning at over 1bb/100 at 100nl in 6max cash games online.
Play 1 million hands of poker in 2013 alone.
Played over 100 online tournaments, improve my theory in mtt's.
Take annual leave and go to at least two live events for the duration - UKIPT/ Genting/ EMOP etc... preferably one in Ireland.
Make 5figs in live cash, have a dedicated £1/2 roll and be moving up/ taking shots at 2/5, even bumhunting live 5/10 (heard of a soft game somewhere).
Keep up with the diary and crush the opposition.. most importantly keep the honesty and the openness of it.  It's a strength imo.

Keep crushing work, potentially go for promotion - more stress means less poker... Sad
Be under 90kg in weight (ideally 85kg) and regularly playing both tennis and the lets go to the gym games.
Have cooked real meals for myself more times than I can count on my appendages.
Vegas trip (have enough miles) and come back in the +ve $$.
Beat Alex 'irunsobad' Goulder in the 3some challenge - rules and referees to be decided.
Help my friends to survive 2013, potentially pull some of them away from degen-ing away....

Im usually pretty poor at this sort of thing, so start it simple, most phones have a notepad on them; at end of day or session record as much or as little detail as you want, (start small) then update at end of month onto a spreadsheet. So a night out might mean -£56 torn, up £170 cash. or just + £114 for day. For on line easier just to show any purchases (deposits) and any withdrawals when you do them to start. I started simple but now have an all singing all dancing dbase.

Nicole - my (at the time) 7 year old daughter...

To get a gold certificate at school (she got gold and platinum)
To get a bigger bedroom ( achieved when we moved house in July)
To get a bigger TV in her room (daddy failed on this score!)

Owen (att) 11yr old

To get minecraft (got a new laptop that could run it so achieved)
To get good test results (massively so achieved)
For us all to have a great 2012 (when i asked him just now, said it was best ever)
(New house, disneyworld for 2 weeks helped I'm sure!)

Myself - 37yrs (att)

To build extension or move house (moved house in July)
To get promoted at work (to be fair I had interview for this in November and was awaiting the result, that said I was told it was going to be very hard to get it- was told I got it end of Jan, starting in March!)
To win a live event or have a $1000 in a poker site ( I won DTD £25 tournament in Feb/Mar)

Writing new ones for everyone tomorrow!

This time last year I said I was going to invest time, money and effort into qualifying for one of the big UK poker tours. Sadly I never got any further than looking at Satellite schedules and the idea was soon forgotten. So for next year, the plan is to do exactly what I didn't manage/really attempt and qualify.
Well, I did slightly better than last year and attempted some sats for the UKIPT. Gonna look see if there's anything left to try for when i break up for Xmas on the 20th Dec for 2 weeks. Might just sneak in before the new year.
Anyone else achieve their goals set nearly 12 months ago???

p.s. I'm sure there willll be a thread along soon for everyone to lie about their intentions for 2014!!!

Kind of a fail

- post less on blonde
 - read things that won't benefit me less
 - play and beat every single poker stake up to whatever starting at nl2 for minimum 20,000 hands each at a very good win rate
 - be the best teacher of poker in the world
 - make PokerStrategy.com the best place for anybody to improve as a poker player
 - make more of an effort with family/friends
- eat more different food
 - make a big effort with staking and make money with it
 - big live tournament, try to not run like aids

Top quality.

Poker

Fully intend to post more in here instead of just browsing around like a recluse, I could probably learn a lot and might even find I have something to give back too.
I'm also aiming to travel further for poker and play a wider audience- targeting at least one full festival and at least a session in the Vic - never played there always fancied it.
Lastly on my poker list is to play a live PLO comp.

The life list

To do my VAT returns on time, getting fed up of the surcharges but they're so draining!!
Get a car that does more than 30mpg! I've had an allergic reaction to these but I suppose I have to grow up at somepoint, fast and/or 4x4 ain't always best.
I will also pledge to spend more time with the family, even if it means teaching the eldest (he is 8 now) the basics of holdem!

That's it for me, see how I go.

2013: Been a pretty decent year in poker and life  but could be better . Only a few issue in poker but I know who to trust and who not to . Still got 2 more decents tourneys to play before year end .

2014: Hope it will be a better year in poker and life . Hopefully also life will change when I turn 50 in March . Not much poker left after that ! Too old to be sitting down and playing cards !!

Anyway all the best to mates of poker in life and anything they do .

Health - Fail - Still fat, actually put on weight over the year, liver still broke.
Sportsbetting - Fail - Still a degen and not tracking my bets
Poker - Pass - Got my 5 figure bink and was profitable in other areas
Family - Pass - Went away with missus and was the best dad I could be

50% strike rate

2014 = more of the same + rectify health and be less of an icecream

Build a roll for $5-$25 MTT - staked a roll for $1-$11
Dont use said roll for big Sunday sessions - cant I am not allowed!
Play a GPS, UKIPT, Deepstack and GUKPT - played a GPS/Deepstack
Win one of the above - didnt win
Get to Vegas - didnt leave country
Get it in Vegas - see above

Life
Lose 2 stone by July - achieved! put back on by December unfortunately
Do a proper pre season and get back playing football - decided against it, had offers though
Make more time for friends and family - think I achieved this
Do not drink for a month to prove I can - errmmm a day maybe

2013 - I gave up all betting, gambling and stupid casino games. For me gambling become nothing more then unhealthy obsession that took time away from my family which i was surprised it actually took a little self control to kick.

Poker very little, only play micro stakes for fun, just no time for it these days.

2014 - Try and embrace being a Dad to my two little girls more and more, finding time to relax and just play with them :) I am so lucky, appreciating it more in the coming years is something i want to work on.

I would like to create, or develop my blog more. It opened some interesting stuff for me regarding WW1/2, if only I could make the time!
