Ha, "Devil's anus", never heard it called that before.
I adore bananas & eat 2 every day (2 apples a day too) but I always remove that horrible bit at the end.
I much prefer 'nanas to be slightly under-ripe too. Taste good, & have the strangely satisfying by-product of producing copious amounts of immensely satisfying greenhouse gas emissions.
Mrs Red likes her bananas slightly under-ripe too, I like them slightly over-ripe.
Between us we're the banana equivalent of Mr and Mrs Sprat.
Amazingly cheap too, I get 2 every day for about 30p total.
When you consider they have to be shipped in a refrigerated boat all the way from somewhere frightfully distant, unloaded at the docks, transported to a Supermarket Distribution Warehouse, unloaded, sorted, re-packed, re-loaded & delivered to our local supermarket, it's stunning value. Doubt the grower gets much more than a penny or two per banana.
Fresh pineapples are terrific value too - you can buy a big bugger for about £1. Again, grown in distant lands & shipped here. The grower probably gets about 5p.
We take so much for granted don't we? Tea is a prime example. I never give the availability and relatively low cost of tea a second thought, but if they stopped importing it I would probably have to close this diary.
Pineapple harvesting.....

What a wonderful tribute to nature bananas are, they come perfectly pre-packaged in much the same way, I suppose, as eggs do.
Both are so easy to open too, unlike, say, milk cartons made by humans.
I was spoiled as a kid, we'd a half acre of sugar bananas growing at the bottom of the garden, us kids were allowed to take all we wanted and what started to go overripe Mum made into banana bread. Sugar bananas are smaller, sweeter and generally nicer than the Cavendish bananas sold over here & I kind of went off bananas when we moved to Scotland as they just weren't as good,

My local chippie The Cod's Scollops's sister-shop in Wollaton (there are only two of them) has just been voted the best Fish&Chip Shop in the UK.
We could pay them a visit next time you're in town if you fancy it. It's only 200 yds from my gaff.
I know you like to have the final word on chippies.

Well play best of 5 for a fish supper. That's how I got started in the old billiard hall above Burtons on the corner of Wellgate and Main St in Rotherham.
Back then you could get bus fare, the light, 10 number 6 and two fish suppers out of ten bob.

Strange you mention Rotherham, by chance I happened across these "Now & Then" photos today Tom.
There's 26 pages of them, see the A - Z at the top.
Extraordinary archive.

Fantastic.
This is the section of river behind Boothy's scrapyard that we sailed down in an inner tube.
The story is on my diary somewhere but I've no chance of finding it.

The billiard hall was on the second floor of the white building on the right. (High St, not Main St as my memory tricked me into saying)

You could maybe pre-dig a few holes for them every day. Sort of make them feel welcome.

The other day I watch the film about a man who ran his car off the road, got it stuck and had to wait for two days to be rescued.
I shouted derision at the screen. Surely he could help himself. Deflate the tyres for more traction, put something under the driving wheels, cut out the seat belts and use them to rig up a pulley system etc...
The following day, fate decreed that I would get the camper stuck.

You can't just put the bolded bit in there and not explain it; please. I might do the first two, but up until today I have never considered cutting out the seat belts and rigging a pulley system up. I'd probably fall over at cuttimg out seat belts, but guess they are less strong across the thread?
