Title: Newcastle Game 4 Life Charity Event Live Update
Post by: Djinn on August 27, 2005, 11:59:23 AM
Hello and welcome to the Civic Centre, Gosforth, live and direct from the Poker 4 Charity do in the hall.  Just to let you all know that Tikay is here (playing) and I will be telling you how he and the other blondeites and friends are doing this fine August afternoon.

Spotted in the car park: Robert HM
Spotted (and being interviewed) in the hallway: Joe Beevers, Claire, Mel (Londonpokergirl) Lofthouse.
Booked: Carlo Citrone, Ram Vaswani

Looks a little unlikely to be starting at midday, but you'll know what's going on as soon as I do.

A little scene setting for you - 14 tables, everyone gets 500 starting chips with the ability to rebuy immediately.  Should be madness, but experienced Mel and sidekick Eugene can handle it I'm sure...

There is a table to my left spread with lovely glass trophies, each balanced on a Fray Bentos pie.  Go figure.

There's a gaggle of about 35 players hovering by the door but they're not allowed to sit down just yet.
Quote from Eugene: "Anyone speak Yorkshire?"  I think Mel was asking for an interpreter...

Enter Ram, Rhowena, The Camel and Ian Bradley stage left.

David Newth has taken the mic in front of a now quite sizeable crowd.  TV coverage is present in the form of the Poker 425 team; Game 4 life is the reason everyone is here (50% of the prize pool is for disadvantaged children) and there's been quite a lot of support from many sources.

I can see one of those oversized cheques from VCPoker for $1500 sitting around; William Hill have donated a bunch of T-Shirts, hats etc., Hendon Mob have brought along some exclusive card protectors as prizes and there's an intriguing raffle involving prizes of booze and a mountain bike.  People seem to be in the charitable spirit and poker books are changing hands for donations.

Thanks have got to go to David Newth himself, and Angie, for sorting this already busy event out.

Team MMM are here in mysterious force, led by James Dempsey himself.  Word is there was a friendly warm-up tourney last night won by Dave Cain and Nigel Grocer, with final table finishes by James and Mel.  Any excuse for a game...

There is some open bribery going on (£5 gets you a seat on one of the 'superfish' tables) but people seem reluctant to sit with RoyalFlush and co.

Adam M has a little stall here selling his Shuffle-Up shirts (which Tikay has already purchased two of.

Incidentally, congratulations are in order for Mr. Thew who somehow managed to turn a tiny stack into second place in the Nottingham £20 rebuy-fest last night. Tikay and I thought it would be a good idea to play that and then drive to Newcastle.  Didn't look so smart when I went out at 2.45am and we had to drive up... but at least we got a celebratory text from Julian which made us happy. ;D

The players are seating themselves, and it's just about to kick off.  There are two 45-minute levels for rebuys to get everyone going (25 - 25, 25 - 50) so I reckon it's going to go nuts.

Title: Re: Newcastle Game 4 Life Charity Event Live Update
Post by: Djinn on August 27, 2005, 01:11:57 PM
Here's the full structure handed to me by the tournament director herself:
25 - 25
25 - 50
end of rebuys (single or double top-up available)
50 - 100 (45 mins)
100 - 200 (half hour)
200 - 400
300 - 600
400 - 800
600 - 1200
800 - 1600
1000 - 2000 and that's enough to be getting on with.

Hello to anyone watching this!  Let me know if there's anyone you want me to keep an eye on...

At-it Bradley on his fifth double rebuy...

Crazy hand just went down there - Tikay had AA vs Ian's 98off and also QQ and James' K 10 (what a table).  They held up!  Good for him...

Also just told about a three-way all-in coup with As4s, A7 and 99.  The flop came 8 10 J, the turn brought the 9 and a flush and the river...9.  "Just say Rudders won..."

I think that can be arranged..

Chip leader is a man called Robson who has amassed around 30,000 already!  Tikay thinks his 10,000 would be "in good shape for the freezeout bit."  Something tells me people aren't in the mood for sitting on their chips though.

James Dempsey and Ian Bradley clash (again) with AQ vs JQ.  They both end up with full houses, but James' Queens full of Aces take the pot.  I think Ian has yet to win a hand...

It's getting serious on Tikay's table.  You can tell because Jonathan Rabb has put his wolfman mask on.

Tikay's AQ just took down another monster pot (well, they're kind of all monster pots) and he must be third or fourth in chips...

Malc is doing the raffle ticket sales, so his dousing will have to wait til the break (probably).  But it's looking promising.  Davey Newth seems up for it.

David Newth is on the mic encouraging the crowd - "Anybody want to see Tony Kendall raise the next hand blind?" And so he does...

It looks like the bidding is up on Malc's pint of water over head... up to 50 quid in total, any advance?

Early chip leader Howard Robson is getting the "Who wants to see him raise blind next hand?" treatment.  Oh, everyone's such a good sport.  Great MCing by our host; with only 10 minutes left til the break they don't need that much encouraging, though.  I've bought some raffle tickets.  Go orange 1 - 25!!

Paul 'M3Boy' Garnham all-in again, trying to encourage the handful of people who haven't felt the random gambling urge yet.

MC quote concerning the pies prize: "Mmm, it's in the gravy."

Dewi - great idea.  Perhaps get him to dye his cats blonde...

Break commencing - here are a couple of chip counts (although no guarantee of their continued accuracy in this atmosphere)
Tikay 18,000
Ian Bradley 15,000
Jonathan Rabb 950
David Lloyd 1000
James Dempsey 7,000
Steve Meehan 5,000

**********break********

There will be an auction, apparently.  There is also a buffet which Angie seems to have made (!)  Managed to sneak in there early before the ravenous horde descended upon it like locusts.

Joe Beevers has done 63 rebuys
Ian Bland has had 45
Robert HM has had 15  - to give you some idea of the craziness of your average table...

Chip-runner Eugene says he's never seen anything like it.

Auction: Tony Banbury (Mr. Pickwick) picks up Harrington's first book signed by Joe Beevers, Ram and Carlo for £125
Looks like several publications are going to get this treatment...

'Man with a girl's car' picks up Cloutier's book, then 'Diary of a Mad Poker Player' with a Barny Boatman interview inside gets downbidded from £40 to £5 when they find out... Ian Bradley gets it for £60 - no, wait, at the last minute Tikay gets it for a surprise bid of £90!

Barry Greenstein's book "with lots of lovely pictures in, not too much writing" gets £75, more crazy auctioning tomorrow.

Tikay brought out Carlo's baby for bidding, but it looks like the impatience to start is kicking off the freezeout section.

PRIZES

The players are playing for half the money raised by the earlier rebuy frenzy, which amounts to £5,745!

Breakdown:

1 £2000
2 £1000
3  £600
4  £500
5  £450
6  £375
7  £270
8  £225
9  £200
10 £125

Ironside: this was a £10 comp officially, but what with the double rebuys, it's more like, oh, £100 a head.

Jonathan Rabb OUT - pocket 88s which hit a set were nevertheless no match for the mighty 7 4 held by James Dempsey, which straightened delightfully.

Right after, the button raises, and Tikay re-raises in the small blind.  The flop comes A K K, the turn brings an A, but it was all really over on the flop with the button holding a King but Tikay holding AA! How lucky is that?  Although he's right that the second Ace saved the other guy the rest of his stack.

(David Newth says if you can come up with £50 between y'all he'll do it and save me the aggravation ;))

Sorry - computer temporarily commandeered to look up football and cricket scores for the anxious players...

It is unfortunate, Ironside, that the people you want soaked tend to be stood on the stage holding a mic or standing around electrical equipment (including my laptop) so proving a tad problematic.  I have my hands a bit full at the moment, but don't think I've forgotten about you...

Hi Nun - I asked Robert how he was doing - he replied "pretty poor" but he's got 7,000 and with the blinds at 100 - 200 he's not in terrible trouble.

Other counts:
Tikay 20,000
Camel 2,500
fugu 8,000
Steve Meehan 5,900
At-It Bradley 21,000
James Dempsey 14,000

The chip leader looks to be one Scott Clark with 45,000

Robert HM has come in person to tell me of his tournament demise:  He had A10suited in the big blind, Joe Beevers raised twice the bb, call.  Flop brought K Q 10, with one of Robert's suit.  He put a reasonable bet and Joe responded by saying "do you want to gamble?" putting him all in.  All in agreement, Joe turned over K Q!  No spades, and "luckily, his two pair didn't improve; sadly, neither did my A 10."

Robert assures me he will be back tomorrow for another bite at the poker4charity tournament flapjack.

Break at the end of this level, and then the levels are being reduced to 20 minutes.  It has suddenly occurred to everyone that this might take a couple of days to finish, judging by how many chips there are in play (575,000?).

Fugu (Stuart Menzies) just won a huge pot all-in preflop with A7 vs Paul Moss' AK suited.  3 6 7 flop suited him fine, and with no improvement he doubles up to over 30,000.  One of the leaders undoubtedly.

Five minute break for everyone to get a(nother) drink and buy up the yellow 25 chips.

RoyalFlush James lost nearly all of his chips (down to 425 - something to do with re-raising all-in with 2 5) and moved on the button and was called by Tikay's pocket 10s but his J4 hit a Jack to get his first double up.  It was all uphill from there, then with AJ vs 99 he won the race.  Then raising all-in on a Q 10 8(all hearts) flop his KQ somehow stayed out of trouble all-in against Ad Jh. He has accumulated 14,000-odd chips by this break.

Before I hassle Tony for his chip count, the last surviving female player (who wins herself a nice glass trophy and a Fray Bentos) is Karen from Cornwall.  People have come from all over the place, including one guy who was pointed out to me as having come from Barcelona to play in this event.

Title: Re: Newcastle Game 4 Life Charity Event Live Update

Here's the latest:

Karen West OUT - last female player takes her trophy and will probably be back tomorrow
Joe Beevers 33,000
Keith Hawkins 3,100
Steve Meehan 18,000 (looks genuinely surprised to have chips)
Ian Bradley 22,000 (on Tikay's left)
James Dempsey 6,000 (says he's modelling himself on Yo-Yo)
(Man of) Steele 12,000 (on James' left)
Paul Garnham 9,000
Tikay 16,000

Chip leader is Mark Scope with around 70,000.  He came second in last year's comp, according to reliable source Angie.

Sit'n'gos have popped up as players are eliminated, and, I think, an Omaha cash game or two; people seem to be hanging around for the long haul, although the desired finishing time for today's festivities is midnight.

******

Big all-in hand between Tikay and Pete Steele:  Pete re-raised all-in holding 99, and Tikay took a long time to call with JJ.  The board came 10 8 9, then a slow turn and river brought 5 6 which doubled Pete through to 28k and knocked the Elder Blond to around 4k!

How Mr Bradley doing?

Has he managed to be his usually chewy self with what must have been a hell of a hangover?!

Could you inform him I've had a quote for a glass eye to replace my real eye (which was lost to Mr Bradley's sizable hand in an unsightly dance move clash involving the spinning of two young girls!) and it comes to £2150....so first prize would do!!!

James Dempsey OUT - having yoyo-ed like the best of them, he found himself all-in with 10 2 (suited!) under the gun, called by sixes, and, in his own words, "unceremoniously lost. Disgraceful."

Ian 'At-It' is holding his own with about 45,000.  He doesn't seem to remember blinding you all that clearly Rooky.  I'm sure if he doesn't win first he'll buy you a wooden eye or something.

Paul Garnham - OUT
Keith Hawkins - OUT

Mark Scope 60,000
Steve Meehan 21,500
Joe Beevers 32,000

New chip leader in Peter Katz with 105,000 or thereabouts (he's one of those uneven stackers)

In the blink of an eye (and the raise of a blind) they are down to the final two tables - 18 players remaining and just ten get paid...

these include (as announced by Davey Newth):

Steve Bennet
Andy Horn (VC poker manager)
"Somebody spposed to be working for 425"
Mark Scope
A geezer from Doncaster
Jacko
Mr Katz (been to every event).  Not a full rundown by any means, but thought I'd write it in case he said some names I didn't already know.

Andy Horn doubles up with AQ vs Joe Beevers' pair of Nines.  Looks like Davey may be announcing some hands from the floor which means I can be yet lazier and just write the hands as he announces them.  Great.

Joe all in again, but gets no callers.

Blinds are at 2,000 - 4,000 currently.

Eric from Manchester eliminated by Andy Horn with his AhKh which connected with the Ace on the flop to give him another sizeable pot.

All-in between Doig (KJ)  and Pav from Doncaster (77)  Ah As 5c Ks 8d

D. doubles through (having a hard time hearing this gentleman's name, but he's 4d on VC, for those in the know)

Joe Beevers all-in with AJ vs 88

Flop 10d Qh 2s
Turn: 3s
River: 4s

Joe '63-rebuys' Beevers is OUT

Russ is all-in with A6
Pav has A3

The board comes: Q K 3 A A which sends a slightly unlucky Russ home in 15th place.

The blinds have risen to 2,500 - 5,000.  The pace looks to be keeping up (there is apparently a blind-reduction on offer for the final table)

Steve Bennet OUT when his pocket Kings are called by the unlikely 10 3 of Ian Bradley.  What can I say.

Post by: Djinn on August 27, 2005, 08:32:50 PM
Steve Meehan  - OUT - Having raised 10k with JQs he got one caller for a flop of K x 6. The other guy bet (putting Steve all-in) and he, hoping he didn't have a King, called.  No King, but pocket 6s! The Q J fell on the turn and river respectively but that was merely rubbing it in.

Blinds 3,000 - 6,000.

All-in between Steve S. making a move Js7s vs Pav's 77

Board: 8s Kc 3h 8h 5h Steve S. out in 13th place.

Bubble prizes have been generously donated left and right - as follows:
Bubble- large bottle of Martini (me)
$100 in VC account- (Andy Horn)
12th - T-shirt (Adam M)

Isn't that nice?

I think the pre-tourney tourney last night saw a much higher level of blondeite inebriation, actually.  It looks like most came nursing some form of hangover, but if I had to name names it would be Joe Beevers (reasonable excuse for all those rebuys if nothing else).

Ian Bradley doubles up a short stack all in with AsJs by calling with Kd 7d.

Rudders calls an all-in with QJ vs A7off.
The board comes J 8 7 6 6 and another player's out (who will receive a nice free T-shirt courtesy of Adam Mason).  Sorry, with all the commentators, they couldn't between them rustle up this guy's name.  Mr 12th place - if you join the forum, let me know who you were and you'll get the credit you deserve...

The Real Bubble time then.  Who's going to make the final, and who's going to get a bottle of Martini so large it's probably dangerous?

"I'm going to do my winning dance" Pav is all-in but despite a clock being put on a potential caller, there is none and the blinds are up.

Davey Newth "Note to self - no Yorkshiremen at the next event."

All-in AK (Rudders) vs A4     2 3 8 10 4 are the cards Brought By Fate...

...and Mr. Rudders has been announced the official Bubble Boy!  Final table of 10 is getting set up, ready to go in ten minutes.

Bubble man would like to add that it was his brother-in-law who took him out.  "And he's a b*****d - and you can quote that."  Fair enough.

The final table looks like this:

1 Doig Rudling
2 Peter Katz
3 Carl Jackson
4 Paul Reast
5 Ian Bradley
6 Peter Steele
7 Dave Rose
8 Andyj Horne
9 Mark Bramall
10 Mark Scope

No idea of chip counts at present, but this will be remedied.  Only action so far is a double up for Dave Rose with JJ vs 88

Mark Scope all-in with AQ vs Paul Reast's 88     3 5 10 10... 8 and Paul doubles up with full house.

Peter Steele 10th place finisher - receiving £125

Very short stacked he moved all in and ended up seeing all five with two other players.  They were: 3d 7c 9c 5d Jc and one of his opponents had made the King high flush, sending him out first from the final.

Ian Bradley 70k
Dave Rose 55k
Andy Horne 78k
Mark Bramall 90k
Mark Scope 130k

Paul Reast is OUT in 8th with AQ losing a race against 88 (board 4s 6c 10s 4h 5c). He wins £225 and a trophy.  They all get trophies, incidentally.  Glass ones.

Peter Katz is the 7th place finisher, picking up £270.  It looks like his all-in with 66 was called by 10 10 which hit a third 10 on the river for good measure.  Down to the final six then...

I am sorry you are bored - would try to get them to go all-in more but don't think it would make any difference.  Nice nicknames though. Someone suggested 'Deputy Doig' earlier.

Q9s for Ian Q8d for Mark was the all-in hand.

Title: Re: Newcastle Game 4 Life Charity Event Live Update
Post by: AdamM on August 29, 2005, 12:33:31 PM
I gave him all my chips and, effectively £200 so no shirt. As I was counting out my pot raise of 21000 which was just over half my stack I regreted it. I thought you and Eugene in the blinds would credit me for a bit more tha 5,5 raising UTG and Shane was raising a lot but not often Re-raising. I'm afraid as I'd been battering my Dwell up since 1pm I didn't consider the call from him unless he had a very big hand. when he called a s fast as he did I thought he must have AA,KK,QQ or AK. Q,J was the hand he liked so much to cut his dwell time from 3 moinutes to 3 seconds. to be fair he was a nice bloke and he realised he'd been very lucky just to final.

Make sure you add some thoughts to the NECS/NECC thread in the General section.
