Title: Dropbox
Post by: RED-DOG on November 28, 2014, 08:59:59 AM
I've  been trying to find out how much Dropbox costs, but I can't find a price list or anything.

Online storage advice appreciated.

free - about the same as dropbox - very

other people might have more specific details, but I think that just about covers it :)

Dropbox has varying capacity packages based on unspecified cost.

Do I have to use the Chrome browser to access Drive?

I've downloaded Google Drive to my laptop. Three folders have appeared, Google Sheets, Google slides, Google Docs.

Now what do I do?

Aren't they your drive folders?  I assume you put files in them and they are the ones that you can access from anywhere.

Isn't there also a folder called just "Google Drive"?

That's what I have - anything put in there gets synched to the drive, although to be honest I normally just go online and upload whatever I want on there rather than doing it this way

It doesn't seem so. The Google Docs folder seems to be a program for creating documents, not storing them. At least I can't see an intuitive way of getting say, a picture into it.

I would have thought that perhaps I could left-click on an item and send it to Google Drive.

Can you log into Google drive online? https://drive.google.com

Like I said - this is the option I use, and I think it's pretty intuitive once you're logged in.

No. I don't have a Google Drive folder, but I have found the program in my program files and created a shortcut. When I open that it looks like a folder.

Do I create new folders within Drive to organize things?

Making (slow) progress.

It looks like files have to be uploaded individually rather than in folders.

I use dropbox free and get 5Gb of storage. Used this for about 5 years or so with no hassle and you can upload multiple files in one go.

You can upload folders in Google Drive

There's a slight complication in that I think they're rolling out an upgrade - but in the version I have I see a dropdown arrow called "My Drive" and one of the options on that is "Upload folder"

Can I ask which browser you use Jon?

Have you tried turning it...

Yes, you've been able to upload folders for a good year or so now with Google Drive.

You get 15gb of storage, but that includes other storage such as emails, etc. within the same google account.

When you use drive, you have two ways of accessing and using it. One is via your web browser, and that's the best way to set sharing preferences, etc. The other way is to find the Google Drive folder on your computer that opens in the same way as a regular folder in windows explorer. Then you can drag and drop, open, delete and whatever with the files that are in there.

One thing has lead to another and I now seem to have

Google Drive.
Google +
Google Pictures.
Google Web Albums.
Google Picasa.

I'm so confused, FML.

That's just what I hate about Google. They are a brilliant company but they just infiltrate every part of your life.

Can't upload or auto backup to a usb stick from my phone in the middle of a field, or anywhere else except in front of my laptop.

You are talking to the man who lost a phone and his glasses in a car park in daylight.
He would need a BS stick the size of a house to be secure ;)

I use Drive and totally recommend sticking with it.

For ease of use, Amazon Cloud is 5gb free and very simple to use.

Right!

I've deleted everything from Google Web Images and Google Pictures, (which just seem to do the same thing as Google Drive imo)

Before I delete the account, do I need Google + for anything?

You don't need google plus

I now have online storage sorted. I have also managed to get my other apps like S planner, Color Note, Contacts etc syncing to Google, and it I managed it all in one 18 hour session.

I couldn't have done it without you lot. Thanks for your patience.

No worries Tom, happy to have been of some assistance.

Any more questions, just ask.

I even managed to re-locate your telephone number too. I got it from my old text messages, which were somehow preserved.

I sat here for two days waiting for you to send it to me, just in case I needed you for something.

You TV celebs are all the same. Shallow as a worm's grave....

I have Dropbox loaded on my 2 work computers and 2 home. The free version (less than 5gb I think) is ideal for my word/excell files. So easy to use and backs up across all computers when booted up.

Ugh, now I feel so bad.

I just thought, you know, that as I rung you immediately AFTER you got your new 'phone, that you would have made a note of my number if you had really wanted it..........

Shallow as a puddle, imo.
