He was booked to do an exhibition at the old man's place back in 96/7, and he never turned up
Can't remember exactly what happened, or why he didn't turn up. Will ask the old man later.
I seem to pick all the wrong people to like.
Old man just said that when he just didn't turn up. He rang him to find out where he was, and Joe Johnson said 'You never got back to me'.
It was all booked and confirmed, my old man said. Never any mention of ring me to confirm the week before etc.
Obv just didn't fancy the 600m round trip
Have you heard the story of Alex Higgins's exhibition match at Nottingham's Victoria Club?
Not sure if I have, but always here for a Higgins story!
Would do well to top the one about his exhibition at my old man's place in '93
Well I wasn't actually there for Alex's notorious exhibition but a good old snooker-buddy of mine was.
The Victoria Club in Nottingham was an old fashioned member's casino with gaming on the ground floor, a horse-racing room on the first floor with a small bar on one side and a quality snooker table on the other and a very nice restaurant on the top floor - a proper gentleman's club.
Alex was booked in to do a fairly intimate exhibition as there's just about enough room for 50 or so people to watch and his manager had told them to on no account let him have any hard liquor but beer would be okay.
About half-way through the evening Alex had somehow got hold of a bottle of whiskey and ended up relieving his bladder into one of the potted plants near the snooker table to the horror of the assembled gentry.
Crikey, I'd forgotten all about the Victoria Club on Victoria Street. Proper posh it was, I thought I'd died & gone to Heaven when I first went there. I was running with a wrong 'un at the time & he got us in & signed for everything on his tab. Then it came out he was not a Member & was masquerading as someone else & so we both got thrown out. I had not realised at the time that George Akins held the Gaming Licence there. Not a man to mess with. Jeez, he must be worth a fortune. Still alive the last I heard too. After that we started using David & John Singh's club in Lace Market for our all-night snooker sessions. There was also a cab drivers "hut" with a snooker table that I somehow had a key for so we'd let ourselves in & play all night there on occasion.
I chanced across these after you mentioned Victoria Club, might evoke a few memories for you;

That's pretty tame compared to ours
My old man didn't want him getting the train down to Dorchester, so we drove up to Cirencester to pick him up, and he had stayed at a boozer there the night before after another exhibition.
Long story, but cliffs are.
Almost got a slap from the bloke that managed dad's club for him, who just happened to be a 2nd dan Black Belt & British Karate champion
Snooker side of things was superb, even when he was drunk, and he played me, even though I wasn't due to be playing him, and think he played as couple extra frames, too.
Went off to Weymouth with a known wideboy from town and that was the last we saw of him.
Kings Arms hotel in Dorchester phoned my old man the following afternoon and I believe it was something along the lines of 'Hi Mike, would you be able to come down and get Mr Higgins out of his room?'
Dad said that he wasn't sure what they expected him to do, if he wouldn't open the door to them he was hardly like to open it for him.
Got him out eventually and he'd made an absolute mess of the room.

I know it's not one for the purists, but always enjoy the shootout that started this week. Last 64 today, then Last 32 to conclusion tomorrow.
Cracking quote from Matthew Stevens yesterday (who won in the final seconds of his 1st round match):
'It's not the same this year. Your friends and family come up in the day and you can't see the balls by the night most of the time.
'Perhaps I've got a chance this year because I'm not steaming.'
As a flyer of a tip, I backed a young German chap called
Lichtenberg
before the start at 350/1. He got through but for some reason can still get him at
325/1
this morning with PP/BF. Drawn Martin O'Donnell next who's not exactly a world beater.

My sister just got into snooker this year. She knew nothing about it before. She was texting me during the Masters saying things like, "wow, isn't Ronnie amazing?" She literally had no idea who he was before. It was funny and kind of cool that she was just discovering this troubled genius. But even she doesn't like the speed snooker, thinking it is gimmicky and annoying. I wonder who the target audience for it is? To me it is a kind of odd novelty. Seems crazy it is for actual ranking points and it is tough on the big lads when they have to run around the table

It's the biggest load of bollocks I've ever seen in my life.

The target audience is probably the Darts audience.

Crikey! I thought mine was bad.
I'll say one thing for him, he's got some bottle.
PS- Don't say anything else for an hour, I'm watching on +1
