Title: EPT at the Vic - Day 1a Live Update - Interactive
Post by: Djinn on September 21, 2006, 02:57:30 PM
Hello!

We're at stop 2 on the EPT trail, London's own Victoria Casino.  We've got a decent press area with the wonders of wifi, so should be able to bring you the same 'quality' updates as per usual...

Welcome to Homer, too, who will be bringing you the news with a combination of myself and Snoopy, who is on his way.

Let's start with the Spotteds:

Among many, many others (we hear we have another sell-out crowd):

Isabelle Mercier
Luca Pagano
Victor Ramdin
Joe Hachem
Barry Greenstein
Phil Ivey
Johnny Lodden
Roland de Wolfe
Neil Channing
John Shipley
Dave Colclough

And that's just the ones I saw hanging around the downstairs bar...

It's great to see some preparation has gone into the tourney here this time for the hordes of players and press who've descended on the venue.  No more hallway squatting for us - we're on a Stud Poker table in a back office (this place is very large behind the scenes) only five minutes from the card room area A.  It's even starting on time...

Jen and I have just gone for our first initial foray into the lower cardroom. I'm still waiting for my press-pass so I daren't stray far in case I get carted away and out of the building. Here's a few of the initial photos. We'll be able to give a full list of players today soonish.

1; Stuart Nash's table
2; Jeff Buffenburger in the hat on another downstairs table.
3; Ian Woodley having his head eaten by a hungry waitress.

Apologies folks for Jen's absence (sp?) and my introduction, but she's not feeling too well at all and has been forced into an untimely exit.

The goods news for me tho is that, due to the strict dress code regulations, I'm void of all the pink shoes mockery that I enduring on my last outing.

And American Terrance Chan is our first casualty.

A standard Kings vs Aces jobby really and, as he put it "He either had Queens or Aces"

There was a preflop raise, re-raise and call, before Terrance flat-called a 2,400 Flop be bet on a Jack high flop.

And then, after his opponent bet 4k on the turn, Mr Chan shoved it all-in, only to find that Mateyboy did indeed have those darn Aces.

Could he have got away from it?

Isabelle Mercier has lost a chunk of chips early on, in a 3 way pot, with a healthy stack of the yellow (1k) in the pot she was forced to fold on a  7h 5s 2s Qd board when the river came  5c and matey stuck in a 5k bet.

Title: Re: EPT at the Vic - Day 1a Live Update - Interactive
Post by: snoopy1239 on September 21, 2006, 04:47:40 PM
Phil Ivey has been struggling in these early stages. He's down to 6,500 and was involved in a pot for virtually all their chips.

The board read Td 8h 9h Qh

Alterman checked and Ivey bet into a 5k pot 1k, leaving himself just 500 behind.

Osman Mustanoglu folded and so did Alterman.

Not surprisingly, Ivey appeared pretty composed and unnerved throughout.

Guess I'll have to wait til 'poo watch' before I can truly hear him express himself fully. (eek - that sounded really bad - apologies)

Matt Tyler is finding life similarly tough.

Down to 4,450, he faced a 1.5k bet on a 2c Jc 2d Ac board from early big stacker and Copenhagen EPT runner-up, Edgar Skjervold.

Tyler folded, allowing Edgar to take the pot, showing Ts Th in the process.

Tyler down to 4,450 and looking rather sad.

Roland De wolfe lost a chunk of chips with A-K vs K-K (a similar occurance took place in Barcelona) taking him down to 7k instead of the 16k he deserves to be on if he had triumphed.

Roland was very keen to report his tale of woe and Channing wanted me to make sure that we garnered plenty of sympathy for the beat.

So could we please here some "aaaaaaaahs", followed by some "Go get em, Roland!" for one of our most successful blondeites.

Pascal Perrault is OUT, most likely removed by John Kabbaj who has amassed a healthy stack of chips, most of which were accrued from an early Aces vs Kings confrontation.

Yaaaaaaaar, here be Stu Rutter news now, i was milling around the upper tables when I saw the blondite bet a healthy 3.5k into a 4k pot on a  Ad 7h 6h Kc which would commit his scanideboy opponent. The latter gave it the full 5 minute dwell, I think he sensed he was beat but couldn't fold, eventually moving all-in with  Aspades 7s, but Stuart was holding  7d 7c and the  6s on the river knocking scandieboy into Davy Jones' locker and pushed Master Rutter up to 20k. He says  :hello: to his brother too.

Kenna James is OUT.

Pieces of Eight!

Here's one I saw earlier:

Uberscandie Henning Granstad won a tidy 6k pot in the first 15 minutes...

Caught him raising from 800 to 1,800 on the turn, board:  Td 6s Ks 8h (with the eight just arriving).  One of two opponents called.
River:  Th the magic card, for he bet 2,000 and was called by Aspades Ts.  His 6c 6d took the pot.  He remarked, "What a flop," both for him and the Other Guy...

Title: Re: EPT at the Vic - Day 1a Live Update - Interactive
Post by: snoopy1239 on September 21, 2006, 05:37:21 PM
Just before the break I witnessed a fun hand, mainly due to the fact that a little bickering match occurred after the hand.

Flop = 6d 6s 8d

Barney Boatman (small blind) bets 1k and Matey boy calls.

Turn = 7s

Barney checks, Mateyboy bets 2k, Barney calls.

River = 5h

Barney checks again, and so does Mateyboy.

Barney = 4d 4c

Mateyboy = Jd Jh

Barney announces straight, subsequently causing all of Mateyboy's mouth muscles to head south.

"How could you call me with that crap?" enquires Mateyboy with a rather fierce tone to his voice.

"I was ahead on the Turn," replies Barney.

"No you weren't," says Mateyboy angily.

At this point, Mateyboy shows his Pocket Jacks.

"Nah, I thought I was behind really, I just wanted to see your cards," gleams Barney.

"The stupid thing is that you made a bad call and then didn't even bet your hand on the River," complains Mateyboy.

"But I wanted you to bet"

"I'm not going to bet on that board after your call on the Turn"

At this point I became bored and mumbled off, leaving the distant sound of mumbling behind me. For a few moments, however, I have to confess to being mildy amusing by the exchange.

Who needs 'poo watch' when you get this at the table.  ;snoopy'sguns; ;nana;

Total number of entries today:- 198 and we are now on the third level with 179 players after just finishing a short break, so 19 have been made to walk the plank. Yaar!!!

I talked briefly to both Stuart and Julian at the break, Stuart couldn't believe the guy called with the A7, especially since he raised him on the flop, but he's well chuffed about getting into the main event for only £150 from last night.

Julian meanwhile is still with his starting stack, though his table is certain to get more interesting now that Ali Mallu has been moved on to it... Not to mention that Ross Boatman and Torstein Iversen are on there too. Here's the action table complete with the guy who has THE best hair in the EPT.

After going from 12k to 7k with a 2-4 vs A-9 that was counterfeited on an A-2-4-6-6 board in which he his two pair on each street, Simon Zach is up to 19k after doubling through.

He called a preflop raise with 7-7, only to hit a third 7 on a 7-x-x board.

Although there were two hearts, Simon shoved the chips in, eventually finding a call from Kd Kh.

The set stood up and Zach is now up there with the chip leaders.

JEFF BUFFENBARGER

WANTED, PREFERABLY ALIVE, FOR AN OUTDRAW ON A FELLOW SOLIHULLIAN

Jeff bet an open-ended straight draw, John Shipley minimum re-raised his flopped set, Jeff raises again and Shipley re-raises.

By this time, Jeff considers himself to be in too deep and decides to push, inevitably finding a call from Shipley.

So, all the chips in on the flop and Jeff makes his straight when a six finds the Turn.

Ouch

Harry Demetriou is OUT, he lost 4 hands in a row and then was all-in with  Ac 9c against  Ahrt 6h only for the flop to come  9h 7h 3h and no miracle runner runner.

Neil 'Bad Beat' Channing just moved for all his chips, with a bit of chat too!

Board = Ts 5h 3d Tc

Mateyboy bets 1k, to which Mr Channing comments, "That's a bit cheap, isn't it? There's 3k in there."

After fingering his chips momentarily, Channing makes the call.

River = Ad

Mateyboy (who is utg) bets 1k yet again, only for Channing to continue his chat with a "I don't like these 1k bets" comment, before moving all-in for another 4.1k, in a confident and authoritive manner to.

Mateyboy gives the ol' I'm 'probably going to fold' dwell (I swear I almost called for the clock) before, surprise suprise, folding.

He did show Pocket Queens though, to which Channing said, "That Ace saved you"

Hmm, food for thought.  ;topofclass;

Ok, since we're on a break, here's a couple of mateyboy squared hands.

MB1 limps UTG for 150, MB2 in UTG+3 raises to 600, table folds round to MB1 who calls.

Flop:

 5s Qh 6h

MB1 checks, MB2 bets 1k, call

Turn:

 Jh

MB1 bets 1.5k, MB2 moves all-in for about 4k, MB1 quickly calls

MB1 = Qc Jc

MB2 =  Ahrt Kh

River:

 9s

But sickest hand I've managed to spot so far has to be this one from El Blondie's table.

 Kh 2s 3d

Mateyboy 1 moves in with hmmm, let's say a specualtive  Kd 4d, he's insta-called by mateboy 2's  3h 3s which only needs to avoid runner runner....

Turn:

 5s

River:

 Ad

Ouch!

And as for Snoopy, haven't cola cubes/pips always been red?

I would wish Woody good luck but he's playing tomorrow, as is recent WPT side event winner Vanessa Rousso and also some guy called Joe Hachem. As a side note, I'm not that impressed by the spacing between the tables, the two card room areas are both very cramped and with so many press members, it's a real challenge to reach some of the tables and I bet some of the players aren't overly impressed. However, giving us the press room complete with sandwiches and coffee is great, even if the pokerstars representative continually hammers how you're meant to take photos in the casino to everyone who comes near the room.

Players seem to be shuffling towards their seat, so I sense the recommencement of play is near.

During the break, I managed to get the lowdown on Steve Valdar's progress.

"Down a bit, up a bit, and now about average"

As per usual with Steve Vladar, it was the big hands that caused those minor alterations in his chip stack.

First off, he raised preflop with Kings, bet the Flop and Turn, before calling a bet from a Q-J holding that made 2 pair on the River.

And then, Steve somehow manged to find multiple callers to his preflop raise with Aces.

Flop = T-T-x and, as you'd expect, Steve bet out, only to find a flat-caller.

The flat-caller then checked the Turn, to which Steve checked behind him.

Come the River, Mateyboy bet out and Steve called.

Mateyboy had Jacks and Steve took the pot with his Pocket Rockets.

After these slight fluctuations, Steve is now back up to 12,000

Paul Campbell is OUT.

A-6 vs A-5

With everyone fixate on the flush draw that emerged on the Turn, the players overlooked the straight, which crushed possibilities of a split pot and sent Campbell packing.

Board = 8-9-T-Q-7

El Blondie has doubled up, after a limper and then a raise from Stuart Nash, he moved all in with the snowmen against Nash's AQ after the limper folded, an 8 on the flop and Dave has around 5k now.

Meanwhile Pommo has about 10k now, he just folded on a A-7-T-6-7 board when matey bet 2.5k into him on the river.

And after losing 5k early doors, Phil Ivey is now up with the best of them with a rather menacing 26,000

Is there any stopping this man?

I remember a few years back people saying that one of the problems about poker is that you can't highlight who the best play in the World is, thereby illuminating the huge luck factor that exists. However, I think the emergence of Ivey as the greatest force in poker has somewhat erradicated that view.

Luke Patten has doubled through off Alan Bettson.

Luke was low anyhow and has only jumped to around 8k, but he managed to get his chips in with a pretty strong hand, J-J vs Alan Betsson's 9-9 on a J-7-x board.

Although the Turn gave Bettson a menacing flush draw, Luke's top two pair stood up.

As soon as I spot Julian rising a raised eyebrow, I know that it can only mean one thing.

Either he's doing his Roger Moore impression, or Alli Mallu is on the warpath.

And, as expected, it was the latter, with Mallu all-in against a youngster with A-T vs Mateyboy's Pocket Jacks.

I think it was a case of raise by MB, button re-raise by Mallu, an all-in from MB, called by Mallu (with little hesitation might I add).

And, as Julian and I expected, that Ace hit the flop and it was all over. Even a fourth diamond on the Turn meant that Mallu's opponent was drawing to the case Jack.

Another one down, another one on the Mallued list.

Some of you may have noticed the name 'Ed Hollis' in the last chip-count.

This is the guy who's responsible for the 'entertaining blog' thread on 'general discussion'.

Plays well above his station, knows it, but loves the buzz too much to quit. A truly great read.

Unfortunately, he is only on 1.5k at the moment and I can't imagine it'll be long before he either doubles up or exits stage left. In fact, I give him 3 hands max.

And here's Luke Patten straight after that hand.

I'm a little concerned by the red curtain though and the potential entrance of BOB. Could cause a few headaches for the tournament directors.

Well I'm back from a tour of both floors of the Vic with lots of news. First up, there are still three tables downstairs, unfortunately, the Vic have, instead of keeping them together, seperated them in between a load of cash game tables which is a little annoying. Anyway, whilst down there you can hear the friendly banter between Jeff Buffenbarger and Ian Woodley which culminated in the former giving the latter a free walk on the blinds (100/200). Woodley laughingly slammed down the Cowboys, saying, "You could've at least given me 100 more chips!!!"

Elsewhere, some double mateyboy elimination news, the first was with the old bullets ;snoopy'sguns; against the kings

The second was when matey and matey had a little raising war on a  Jh Jd 5s, unfortunately matey's  Ks Jc was no match for matey's  Js Ad....

Both Isabelle Mercier and Phil Ivey have managed to recover from losing around half their chips in the opening two levels.

Ivey has around 15k last time I checked, whereas Mercier just scooped an 8.2k pot when value betting 2k on a  2h Kh 8d 9d 7s board. Her opponent called and then mucked when he was shown  Ahrt Ks.

Mickey Wernick doubles up news now.

The Worm had been getting short and moved in with  Jc Tc and might have felt it was a  ;shitfanhit; moment when he was called, but his opponent had  Ac Kd and two Jacks fell on the flop, and although a broadway straight draw came on the turn, Lord Wernick's trips held up and he is in a much healthier position. [Edit] In fact, the T did come on the river, of course that filled Micky's boat, so oops...

El Blondie had made some headway after his double up but just lost some chips back to Stuart Nash in a rather unfortunate way, the board read 9-A-6-8-7

El Blondie -  Aspades 9h

Stuart Nash -  Ac 5s

Eeek!

Meet (well, look at) David Plastik and Petr Hedblom, both big characters not just at this table, but in the whole field.

Petr is in fact a rather hyper-active Swedish player who just can't zip it. He means well, but when he left for the loo, David Plastik could help but comment, "I don't know what's more annoying, the piano player or the mofo sitting next to me."

Slightly harsh, but an entertaining table nonetheless.

He was brave enough to call a 10k river bet for all his chips (about 10-15k in the pot), but ran into Alon Huberman's straight (T-J) on a board of 2d-Qh-8d-6h-9h.

Golser didn't look happy.

Stu 'Easy Pickings' Rutter just lost a pot to Ricki Nielsen.

The board read 6c 9c 9d 3s

Stu bet 3k, Nielsen called.

dpommo has eliminated his buddy, Mark Teltscher.

dpommo raised to 950 from utg+1, only for Mark to make it 3k a few seats down.

dpommo then pushed all-in, and Mark called for his final 2k, although he was considering folding.

dpommo = A-Q, Mark = K-T

Not sure why Mark made the move, but it didn't pay off and he is now out.

El Blondie is OUT, he raised to 1200 in the SB with AQ after a limper with around 3k behind, the BB called and the limper folded. The flop came A-K-7, and Dave checked to trap trying to get full value, all the chips went in on the Q turn, unfortunately the BB held JT. Dave also mentioned an earlier hand when Ram (who has had position on him the whole time) raised with K3 and Dave called with A9 for the flop to come A-K-3. Just another one of those days at the office. :(

All 3 members of the Hendon Mob playing today are doing rather well so far.

This is the elusive far table that is nigh on impossible to get anywhere near.

Look closely and you may be able to spot Mr John Kabbaj on the left. I am unable to see his chips well enough to count them precisely, but I can tell from afar that he still has a decent sized stack, probably in the region of 25-30k.

To be honest, I only took this picture because Dina (sp?) was in it, oh, and for the creepy Twin Peaks curtain in the background.

Oh okay then, I confess, just for Dina.

Rikku is OUT, I'm afraid.

John Kabbaj = 28,000c (it's really tough to reach his table but he has two healthy stacks of yellows (1k) and purple (500)

Incidentally, I saw the thread about the Vic's dress code policy during the last break, and I just thought I mention that it doesn't seem to be unusually strict. There's a fair number of people who are just wearing plain t-shirts (no collars) and jeans, with shoes, but still I wouldn't consider them looking incredibly smart.

Roland de Wolfe is still being massaged, for nearly two hours now... "He'll need to come first to pay for that," says Snoops.

Stu Rutter has just eliminated a player with Pocket Aces.

Mateyboy raised to 1,500 preflop with the speculative hand of Q-9, Stu re-raised, and MB pushed for his final 2.5k.

The Aces stood up and Stu is back up to 20k after taking a few hits.

There is a reason for this.

Seeing as though so many turned up with the incorrect attire, the Vic decided to relax the dresscode just for today. The strict rulings will return tomorrow.

A few pearls of wisdom from bondeite, Ash 'realshady' Pervais.

Ash reckons Alan Betson is a dark horse. He says he's played with him in Vegas and has heard that he's pretty handy online too. "A hell of a player," paises Ash.

He then went on to discuss Annand 'Victor' Ramdin, who he's also played with, one time in a WPT.

"I'm not sure where he got all those chips from. I've played with him a few times now and he's a rock. He's static!"

Julian Thew in double up oddity news now.

Just spoke to the Thewster and he told me that he got short and pushed for 3k (blinds are now 200/400 with a 50 ante) UTG with AJ, and then was very worried when the button who was also short with pushed all-in behind him. But in fact the button had not seen Julian move all-in and had pushed with 10,4o. So Julian is still shortish but at least he has some chips now.

Elsewhere I spoke briefly to Liam Flood who was inquirying if Phil Ivey was still in and told me that earlier Ivey had got it all in, (whilst he was around the lower stacks early on) with 99 vs JJ only to spike a 9 on river. Yoiks!

I'm sorry to say Stuart Nash went out about 5 minutes ago, with AQ vs AK.

I think they'll be playing a couple more levels, maybe up to the 400/800 level. There's around 100 players left now and still quite a few short stacks.

Something that tickled me earlier.

After suffering a nasty bad beat resulting in his untimely exit from the comp, Mateyboy was walking away from the table when Martyn Cavanagh picked up a small horseshoe card-protector and shouted, quite innocently, "Hold on, you've forgotten your lucky horseshoe"

I'm not sure why, but it made me giggle, especially considering he'd just been knocked out.

What really made me laugh was the guy turning round and saying, "It isn't mine".

Martyn looked slighty foot in mouthed.

Not very funny to most, but I was tickled salmon.

Luca Pagano is OUT.

He moved all-in, unfortunately at a very bad time indeed as Petr Hedblom had Pocket Kings next door, and Barny Boatman had A-Q off in the Big Blind.

But it was Barney who won the hand after flopping an Ace. Petr allowed him in cheap by flat-calling the pre-flop all-in, and then bet 1.5k on the Ah-Ts-9c flop, to which Barney called.

Inevitably, with Barney being out of position, it was checked down with Barny taking the pot with top pair.

Pagano mucked.

Jeff Lissandro, who finalled in Barcelona last week is also OUT.

OK, my first update of the event.

Simon Zach has had a good little run, winning a few hands in a row. Chris, a Walsall dealer was moved to his table and Simon recited a tale to me from the Midlands Medley final earlier in the year when Chris coming on to deal resulted in bad luck for Simon as he was eliminated that very hand.

Anyway, Simon flat calls for 400 from early position and short stacked Trevor Reardon makes it 1200. Its folded back round to Simon, who calls.

Flop is  Tc Kh 8c

Simon puts a stack of yellows in, more than enough to cover Big TR's remaining 4k.

Trev thinks for a minute or so then calls, showing  Qh Qs

Simon has  Ac 9c

The turn is  Ahrt , the river the  5s

Trev exits and the Bubble (who then went on to win the very next pot as well) now has a good squeak at it, on over 35k.

Mickey Wernick's stack has been yoyoing recently. Since his last recorded chip count of 17k he went down to 10k, then doubled up to over 20k with kings versus A-9. Shortly thereafter he was accused of string betting, but either way he found no callers and showed his pocket deuces. On about 24k now.

We're on another short break til 1am. Where the blinds will be 300/600 with a 75 ante.

'Milkybarkid' Ben Grundy is OUT, he pushed with AQ, got called by K8 and the king came on the river.

The board says there is 90 players left, but we reckon it's a few less than that, so the average stack is about 23k now.

One possible reason for Petr Hedblom's incessant hyperactivity could be that he is an asthma sufferer and smoke from the restaurant kept billowing over on to his table. He told me his pulse is currently 30 beats higher than it should be as a result. Anyway, his table has now been broken and he has been moved to another one.

dpommo has eliminated his buddy, Mark Teltscher.

dpommo raised to 950 from utg+1, only for Mark to make it 3k a few seats down.

dpommo then pushed all-in, and Mark called for his final 2k, although he was considering folding.

dpommo = A-Q, Mark = K-T

Not sure why Mark made the move, but it didn't pay off and he is now out.

 :D

Has Pommo put these chips to good use? Can we get a chipcount please?

thanks for the updates all!

Stu Rutter and Petr Hedblom tangle, Stu raises to 2200 in EP, Petr next to him re-raises to 6000, it's passed back to Stu who re-raises it to 20k leaving about 8k back. Petr eventually mucks and Stu shows AK... What did Petr pass? TT perhaps? Is that how to play AK?

i would guess that stu figures there is enough in the pot to warrant taking it down there, rather than having out of position tangle. if flop misses he is going to struggle to take hand

hmm very interesting one actually. obviously if petr had AQ then bad play from stu,but seems unlikely for a reraise. the bet takes away the position disadvantage, and knowing stu im sure he doesnt want a 50-50 against tens or jacks, which surely cant call here. what do u reckon homer? admittedly not much point in showing tho true

Just witnessed a huge Mateyboy squared moment between the two players either side of the dealer.

A massive pot which increased in size on each street, eventually culminating in an all-in on the River, which was called.

In the end, with the board reading 2h 9h 2d 3s 9c, Mateyboy on the left had Q-Q, just pipping his opponent's Pocket Knaves.

Stu is just managing his image at the table as he sees fit, he won't show many times.

The standard is probably fairly high seein as it is an EPT event, showing someone rags once at this stage probably
isn't going to send them on an UberTilt

Hi guys,
Good updates as usual.
How's Isabelle doing ?

Isa is now on around 30k, she seems to be having a really good time, she limped in from the cut-off and the small blind made up and then all three players decide to check the flop dark.

Flop:

 9h Ks 7s

Turn:

 Kc

The SB checks, the BB bets 1200 and Isabelle calls, the SB folds.

River:

 4h

Check, check.

The BB shows sixes, but Isabelle has A7 (and has obviously read snoopys article about limping with raggy aces ::))

I don't think he should've shown, but it did visibly upset the other guy when he did. So perhaps it was the right move. Anyway I'm going back to the cardroom, you'd be surprised but we have to go down one set of stairs, through a load of doors then up another set of stairs. A quick browse of the chip leaders shows us that your current chip leader is Johnny Lodden with an incredible 146,000. He's quite the player!

Leading the chasing pack is Anon Y Mouse (pictured below) on 75,000, closely followed by Simon 'The Bubble' Zach with 74,650, with England's Sam Hayak (73,300) and Hendon Mobber, Barney Boatman, (67,750) not too far behind them.

If you're wondering how Simon accrued all those chips, it was in a fortunate battle of the blinds clash with Shannon Shorr. All-in preflop, Simon flopped a set of Queens to outdraw Shorr's Pocket Cowboys.

Craziest of the Crazy happenings now.

And it's all about Mickey Wernick.

He got completely crippled following an JJ vs AK confrontation after a King came on the flop, Mickey thought he was out but he had 675 left which went in the next hand with AT but got called in 4 places before Ram raised it with A6. A ten came on the flop and Mickey was up to 3.2k. You'd think he'd stop there right? No. First hand after the colouring up, there's a limp and Mickey moves all-in again, Barney Boatman calls but Ram moves all-in. Barney folds and Ram shows  Ac Kc but Lord Wernick has...... Ahrt Aspades, and now he's back to over 10k....impressive huh?

A quick note on Johnny Lodden.

Considering he plays every single one of these EPT events, he doesn't seem to win all that much, and you rarely witness him make the final table. (In fact, I don't recall one EPT that I've been to where he finalled.)

This is where the big bucks lie, yet he's not getting there. True, he has the ability to amass a huge amount of chips, but he also stuggles to hold onto them, often losing them by the bundle at the latter stages. So whilst his agressive chip-getter go style makes him a fearsome player, does it make him better than the players who keep a lower profile, yet still make the final table of these EPT events?

Title: Re: EPT at the Vic - Day 1a Live Update - Interactive
Post by: NoflopsHomer on September 22, 2006, 02:27:37 AM
I've spoken to Stuart about those two hands, the showing of the AK was actually meant to signify that it was a weak hand and try and tilt his opponent. And as the for the KQ vs TT hand against I think Mick Cook who is now OUT, Stu said Mick had re-raised him 4 times previously when he had raised and he had decided to push, tough call to make with tens, but I think if they'd both seen the J-T-9 flop, all the chips may well have gone in anyway.

Now we are on the final level of the night. 63 players left on 7 tables. Blinds are now 400/800 with a 100 ante. 31,400 is the average stack.

Lodden is showing no sign of putting on the brakes - he just casually re-raised Ramdin under-the-gun pre-flop raise of 3.6k to to 7.6k.

Ramdin folded quicker than the speed of light. (That's very quick, Kev)

You'd think Mickey Wernick would be pretty happy getting from 675 to 10.2k in a couple of hands. Well you'd be wrong. Very wrong.

A button raise to 3.6k followed by a call from the small blind, was met by all-in from The Worm, for 6.4k more, both called and then checked the  Jc 9d 5d 9h 3s down where Mickey's pocket 10's were enough to scoop the pot against the  Ahrt 5h of the raiser with the SB mucking, putting him above 30k now. This was followed by a chant of "There's only one Mickey Wernick," from himself. :D Anyway, it's an example of being patient with the short stack, that and getting a break or two. ;)

I'm not doubting that he's a top class player, but that's online, and probably not tournament play.

As you surely know, live tournaments are a completely different kettle of fish and, as of now, he is yet to prove himself as the world class player that everyone pedestals him as.

Sure, he's won around the 50k mark, but I doubt his live tournament profit (if there is a profit at all) and final table appearances is as impressive as everyone seems to think it is.

However, I do believe Lodden is a great player and will soon become one of the best, but, up to today, I really don't think has reached the calibre of players such as Vaswani, Helppi, Mallu, Thewy, etc

We are talking about a very small sample, i think the $10m+ in his poker account tells us he knows a thing or 2.

But Lodden is just 21...! Helppi must be 35+, Mallu 55, Thewy 45, Ram, I dunno, 32? He's an astonishing talent imo.

I never said he didn't have incredible talent and potential. In fact, in my previous post I commented that "Lodden is a great player and will soon become one of the best". Over the last year however, he has been hailed as having reached that potential already, but his live tournament results say otherwise and I firmly believe that he is yet to prove he is as good as the aforementioned players.

Table Ram
Table Good Lighting
Table Mercier/Rutter

The last photo I managed to steal just as they were shutting down play for the day, so a couple of the players are missing as they'd already left.

A late casualty is Roland De Wolfe, his AK ran into TT with no improvement.

Mickey Wernick also lost a big pot late on with QQ vs KK, leaving him with just 9k for Saturday.

Was out at the Vic earlier tonight. There was a kid on the table behind Ivey in a black shirt wearing earphones with a fairly large stack. Think he was from Norway or somewhere around there! You don't know his name by any chance from that description do you?

And just as we approached the end, James Arkenhead doubled through his tiny 7,300 stack when his Pocket Eights held up against Big Slick, all-in preflop.

Do you need to have results for people to realise you are a class player? I don't think so.

Most people were aware of how good a player JP was before he won a main event. Does he become a better player the day after winning 1?

Lodden is clearly an excellent player, anyone who plays with him comments on this fact. That alone is enough for me, looking at variance prone results is not the way to gage the very best players.

Add to your Lodden-discussion

Here is one of the moments of today;

Pocket AA in early position, raise 700 pre-flop. Get called by Mr Kabbaj on the button.

Flop comes  Qc Ts 9d

Lodden bets 1800, Kabbaj makes it 4000, and Lodden folds, showing aces, while Kabbaj tosses his head and shows up pocket 9's.......

Good fold, Johnny-Boy!
