Title: Pokerstars.com Bahamas EPT: Day 2 - At A Glance
Post by: NoflopsHomer on January 07, 2008, 08:24:58 AM
478 players return today, playing for a first prize of around $2 million dollars, the full prize money listings should be coming later today.

Last night we had the Media tournament featuring top names like Tom (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1138) McEvoy (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1138), Barry (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=478) Greenstein (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=478) and Snoops. I managed to bluff half my stack off early doors, with A-J on a Q-T-8-3-Q board against T-9, before sucking out completely masterfully outplaying Tuan Lam and knocking him out by shoving with Jd Td and getting him to call with his inferior Ahrt 9d knowing that I was going to hit. Sadly I ended up losing with A-K against another player's Sevens, though I won the side pot against Tom (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1138) McEvoy (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1138)'s Queens after the board came K-x-x-x-7. Snoopy managed to make the final table before going all-in blind against A-J and A-8 and turned over 7-2. He lost. So rigged. Ok, the structure wasn't great but these little tournaments are really good fun, especially with the great atmosphere that's always in the media room.

James Akenhead is sadly, but predictably out, he was in the big blind, was live with 6-4 against Qs Ts, the player in seat 1 helpfully chipped in before the board was dealt, "Oh I passed 6-4 too, sorry."

The Qs Ts made a flush and James was OUT, "Should've stayed in bed..."

Thor Hansen was moved to his seat and immediately moved in first hand with Jacks, getting a call from Brandon Becker with Ace Queen. The Jack flopped and the mighty Thor doubled through.

Arnaud Mattern is OUT. "The cut-off raises, I shove from the small blind with Jacks and the big blind wakes up with Kings..."

Aurangzeb Sheikh just lost a chunk to Marc Levy, Marc makes it 3k from the button, Ozzy87 made it 11k and Levy then pushed for 32k total, as one of the his helpful friends described the action, "There's no way Marc doesn't have the best hand here," he whispered to me. And certainly it seemed that way as Ozzy was contemplating calling off another 20k or so for the 40k in the pot, he obviously knew he was behind, but eventually decided to fold. A good job too as Marc showed him the bullets.

British player Trevor Williams just lucked out, and I'm sure he won't mind me saying that. All-in with a set of Nines against a set of Jacks, a fourth Nine on the River resulted in a scream from the unfortunate victim, a flurry of media peeps flooding the table, and a cheeky, mischievous grin plastered across Trevor's face as he raked in the circa 40k pot. Hard not smile after a River like that, although the guy with the Knaves didn't find it funny, not sure why.

Andrew Teng is playing with the zest and gusto of a child on Christmas morning, his latest conquest being a nice pot off previous winner Steve Paul-Ambrose, Teng's 8,600 bet on the River of a Qc Th 7d Jd Ad board with Ac Kh eventually being paid-off by the PokerStars pro.

I think Andrew might be one to watch out for. He was the highest placing Brit at the start of the day, and he seemed totally unfazed by it. Calm and collected and about as cool as a Fonz in a freezer.

Peter Gould is OUT, constant pushing started to irritate his opponents, and when he came over to the top of a raise again, this time one player's patience snapped and he called with Fours only to find that this time Gould had Aces. Four on the river, and Peter is off to try and buy-in for the Battleships event.

Stuart Taylor, "I sucked out again, re-raised a guy all-in with T-2, he called with A-K and I hit a deuce."

Andy Lowe is OUT, 6-6 vs A-J while Dave Colclough looks to have departed his table also.

Magnus Tollefsen, we are told is OUT, though we have no details. Håkon Bentsen is doing very well though, he has over 120k just re-raising a hijack raise of 3.5k to 10.5k from the button.

Andrew Teng has just lost a huge pot, raising to 3,025 preflop with J-2, betting 4.5k on the Q-6-2 flop and being check/called. The Jack on the turn improved his hand healthily as he bet 8.5k and was again check/called. The river, a seemingly blank 4 was checked for a third time by his opponent, and this time Andrew bet 18.5k and was once again called. His opponent rivering a set of 4's.

Passing Michael Martin's stack, he gave me a roll of the eyes, it appears he's taken a couple of huge hits today and is stuck nursing a 20k stack now.

There aren't too many people in the poker world as hip and trendy as me, but Dutch stud Noah (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=677) Boeken (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=677) certainly comes a close second. He looks slightly startled in this particular shot, but it's his opponent who ought to be looking at the felt with a bemused look of befuddlement, Noah's all-in re-raise with Q-T outdrawing Yankieboy's Pocket Sevens on an A-T-9-K-3 board. Looks like the former Magic: The Gathering geek has jumped up to 60-70k.

Although he took a dent with K-3 versus 9-9 on a K-3-9-Q-7 board, French madman Eric Koskas is still on a healthy 103,000.

We haven't used this picture for a while...

;bp;

but this really was a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge pot.

Raising it up pre-flop to 8k, Johan Berquist was swiftly re-raised to 24k by Julio Marines two seats down. I didn't catch the action on the 3c 8d 7s Flop, but on the 3s Turn, Johan bet out 26k and Julio, rather more reluctant than before, made the call. A 6c River, and Johan bet out for the second consecutive street, this time making it 30k to play. Although he almost folded, Julio couldn't seem to release his 8h 7h, which was painfully counterfeited by Johan's 9c 9d.

Johan now up to a spine-tingling 270k., Julio down to 89k.

Michael Martin appears to be OUT.

Nicolas Levi has dropped to 50k after raising to 3k preflop with suited connectors (I think 8-6) and getting one caller from the blinds.

Ad Ts 7d

The blind led out for 5k and Nic didn't give him credit for an ace and decided to flat-call and look to take away the pot later. The turn was a raggy black deuce and now the blind checked and Nic bet 10k and was called. The river was the Td, a scary card but the big blind checked so the 'Hatpimp' set him in but was quickly called by an interestingly played Kd Jd. After this, Levi then had Kings cracked by a rivered flush knocking him down to 30k, but has rebuilt back up to 50k.

Another Nick, Gibson this time has also taken a knock and has 45k. "I had an accident, I put him on a hand and I was waaaaaaaay off."

Steve Jelinek's been railing his better half, Irena Liepina, she had dropped to about 60k earlier but now she's on over 100k and looking comfortable. Also recovering is Andrew Teng, he looks to be back above the 100k mark also.

Andrew Teng bets 11,600 on the river of a Qd Kd 9c 9d 7s board. Because it was the last hand before the break, William Thorson takes an age before eventually passing after a good five minutes.

Some more updates on the poker enigma Håkon Bentsen would also be nice. Perhaps try to get a few words out of him, some interesting hands, how he likes his table, etc.?

Hakon is still in with a more than respectable 115,000. He started he day with circa 70,000 and has built his way up by winning several small pots and avoiding the big showdown. The one showdown he did stumble upon was a Nines versus Aces encounter, Hakon finding some good fortune when a Nine hit the board. He was the bigger stack at the time, so the loss wouldn't have eliminated him from the tournament.

----------

Johan Berquist, who finished 8th in the 2006 Scandinavian EPT, has extended his chip lead to 300,000.

Meanwhile, on Berquist's table, the little guys are still hanging in there, Adrian Gaville finding himself all-in with A-T versus K-Q. A vomit-inducing King hit the 2-K-J Flop, but after the 5 Turn, a Queen arrived on the River to keep Gaville alive. I had to double check the board at one point, because Gaville was about as cool as you can get, his facial expression not budging an inch. No whooping and hollering from this guy. In fact, if you peeled a cucumber of its skin, popped it in the fridge and shipped it off to the North Pole, it still wouldn't be as cool as Gaville was during this hand.

A couple of seats down, Tom McEvoy is keeping his head low with 48,200.

Julian Thew has doubled up with Aces against Ad Qd after the board bricked out. "Only the second time I've seen a flop all day..."

The yo-yo grinder is now up to 80k.

Going even better than this is Stuart Taylor, in the 600/1200 level he raised to 3,500 from the small blind with Q-T. The flop came a not unhelpful Q-Q-T. Ok, now how to get paid off. He started with a flop check/call of 6,500. Then both checked the T turn. On the river he made a weakish 10k bet that managed to elicit a push from his opponent, which he called quicker than a Flushy posting a put-down on the PHA board.

Elky has lost a chunk with Kh Th being in bad shape against Ahrt Jh on a 7h 2h 3d board. Both hit their flushes but Elky loses around 40k of his stack.

Chris (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=504) Moneymaker (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=504) is OUT, in hand where Nick (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=305) Gibson (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=305) said he 'imploded'.

Adam Green raised to 6,000 and Moneymaker made the call, the flop came K-Q-x with two hearts, Green bet 9k and Moneymaker made it 18k. Green called, and then led out again on the turn for 22k when a third heart appeared on the board. Moneymaker moved in for 55k total and was instantly called by Green's Ahrt Th leaving Moneymaker's Qh Jx drawing dead.

Another member of Pokerstars, Daniel (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=515) Negreanu (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=515), isn't his usual chipper self, he's down to only 25k or so and the bloggers are circling awaiting a double-up or exit.

Smashing news for Brit fans as Julian (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=225) Thew (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=225), displaying a surprising level of patience today, has just doubled up off his next door neighbour pictured below. Raising it up pre-flop under-the-gun, Mateyboy received three calls, one of whom was Julian in the big blind. On the 8h-8d-3c Flop, everyone checked, before Mateyboy bet out 25k on the 3s Turn. After the other two players had ducked out of the way, Julian, as nonchalent as ever, calmly announced all-in and picked up his three remaining stacks. Clearly pained by his decision, Mateyboy juggled up the options in his mind before eventually making the call for what looked like circa 30k extra in chips. However, upon seeing Julian's commanding 8c-7h, Mateyboy folded quicker than Super Ted on Concorde, perhaps indicative of a middling pocket pair, or even A-K. Either way, Julian has surpassed the 100k mark and is finally gathering speed.

-----------

The very hand prior to Julian Thew's timely double-up, PokerStars sponsored pro and former champion Steve Paul-Ambrose made what he may have believed to be a faux pas, his departing comment of "oh, I didn't realise you had so much" perhaps explaining why his 80k re-raise of Adam Brager's late position 8k raise was so chunky. But even so, Brager had a tough decision to make for a large pot, and one that he decided to take a stab at with Ahrt Qh. Paul-Ambrose, meanwhile, will have been relieved to see that his 7h 7d was coinflipping, but not so laid-back when the board came Ad Kd Ks 4h 9s. Paul-Ambrose quickly exited stage left leaving Brager to encapsulate his arms around a nice meatalicious pot.

Duy Lee has just stubbed his toe in a major way. On a 7c 7h 9d board, he raised a 30k bet by another 75k. His unfazed opponent moved all-in for a remaining 25k on top, and there was roughly 190k (!) in the pot but Duy folded. Could you fold no hand no draw there? (with roughly 200k back?)

One face that disappeared earlier was that of Bill Edler in a horrible hand against Victor Ramdin. Victor raised, Bill re-raised and Victor felt Bill was re-stealing, so decided to go for the re-re-steal with 5-4. Edler was holding Kings ... It didn't matter when the flop came 6-7-8 though...

Daniel (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=515) Negreanu (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=515) is OUT. He made his swan song with Q-Js, but ran into Aces. A 2-K-6-4-K board was of no use. I think he mumbled something about wishing it had happened a few hours ago instead.

Nick (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=305) Gibson (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=305) is no more (I don't mean his passed away, just that he's been eliminated), his parting words being, "Ace Jack versus Nines, glad to find a spot."

Julian Thew has somehow magicked his way to 270k. He was very blase about it when I made my inquiries, claiming that he hasn't encountered any major pots. He did confess to adding a few chips to his stack with Queens on a dangerous Flop, and also an A-T versus A-4 confrontation on an Ace high board.

Håkon Bentsen must have downed a gallon of Red Bull during the last break because he's now shot up to a nose-bleed inducing 245k. His latest scalp was Ryan Collett, the Norwegian feeing obliged to call a 20,500 bet on a Td 7c 5d Flop with a paltry 3s 3h, but somehow finding himself ahead against Collett's 9d 8d. He may have been ahead, but Håkon would need the dexterity of 11 Phil Hellmuths to dodge these bullets, but like the nimble twinkle-toed panther that he is, dodge them he did as a Qc and 2c bricked out on the Turn and River to send the American packing.

Here he is next to Hakor Bentsen.
I see that I don't have to rush my spanishlessions, since your Norweigian isn't quite there yet Chis :D
His name is Håkon, or if you don't want to copy/paste the å everytime, Haakon.

Thanks Kjetil, I'm still waiting for my Norwegian keyboard...

Eric Lynch plays live, too Snoops. He's a good man.

Americans are also following Chistian Harder (Charder) a young online player.  Heard he's up there in chips.

Eric Lynch has about 305k, but just had the chip lead snatched away from him...

By Jon Friedberg...Josh Arieh raised to 9k from early position and one player flat-called before Friedberg made it 50k. Arieh pushed and the other player folded. Friedberg made the call with his Ahrt Kh dominating Arieh's Aspades Qd with the board bricking out making Friedberg the chip leader with 380k...

But then I'm typing that all up and then Benjo comes in declaring that Elky aka Betrand Grospieller has just knocked out another player with A-K vs Queens making him the new chip leader with 410k...

Will Hill's going to be proud of this guy, because Julian (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=225) Thew (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=225) has eliminated his next door neighbour and is now on a mouth-watering 350,000. Mateyboy raised it up from early position, Julian re-raised, Mateyboy pushed all-in and Julian made the call, obviously hoping that he was up against overcards.

Mateyboy = Aspades Kh

Julian = 8s 8d

Flop = Ad Qd 4d

Turn = 3d

River = 5c

Was it ever in doubt?

-----------

Hugo Spangenberg has just enjoyed a last level double up. He found Aces and survived an 8-2-8-J-6 rainbow board against Nines and Fives, the latter of the pairs belonging to Thierry Van Den Berg.

-----------

I apologise for rattling off the hands with such little elaboration, but they've gone bananas during this last level, the latest victim being Dutchman Marc Naalden.

There was an initial raise, ElkY re-raised and Naalden pushed all-in for circa 80k. ElkY called with A-K, Naalden had Queens. King on the River.

-----------

This isn't just the face of a man who's experienced a WSOP Main Event final table, but also one that's just got his fingers caught firmly in the cookie jar, yet survived to tell the tale.

With the Flop reading 8h Jc 2d, Khan bet, Yankieboy raised and Khan pushed all-in. Yankieboy quickly called with Aspades Js to find that he was in terrific shape against Khan's Ad Qd, but a 3d Turn followed by a 4d River soon put a stop to that, a sneaky backdoor flush giving Khan a perhaps undeserving second lifeline.

"Gross," added an observer as the dealer pushed the chip towards Khan.

It must also be said that Khan didn't jump around as if suffering from an epileptic fit or mimic any kind of primate as a form of victory dance, instead remaining silent in his seat until the chips were pushed his way.

I found Christian Harder, he had about 220k just before the end...

(http://www.blondepoker.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=7400&g2_serialNumber=2)

Eric Lynch regained the chip lead right at the end, calling an all-in on a 5c 2d 3h 9d board with Kings up against the drawing Ad 6d, the river was the 9c and 'Rizen' is the first player over the 500k mark. Elky and Mark Friedberg are close behind, with Julian Thew also in the mix with 370k and William Thorson lurking on 311k.

That is everything guys.

We'll actually be using Jon Raab's number-tagging system from the GUKPT, so fingers crossed, all names and chip counts from tomorrow will be there.

Tomorrow we are playing down to the final 36, (or at least that's the plan). Hopefully whoever you are supporting will be there.

Take care.
