We're running a bit late today due to a hold-up on the freeway. No idea what was going on, but we did see a few cop cars hanging around.

More used to slow journeys on the Stratford Road, I never once thought I'd be stuck in traffic on Las Vegas Avenue or Frank Sinatra Drive.

Anyhow, back to business.

Today is Day 2 of the $1,500 No Limit Hold 'Em Freezout, but also that start of the $2,500 Pot Limit Hold 'Em Freezout too. As so many Europeans failed to make it the end of yesterday's play, we thought we'd keep an eye on the Pot Limit Event. Rumour has it that the likes of El Blondie, Tony Chessa, Marc Goowin and co are all playing, so it may be of more interest to you if our updates for today focused more on this Event.

We're keeping an open mind.

OK - here's the deal - after a scan like Snoopy's only much much quicker ;) I make an executive decision to concentrate mainly on the $2,500 today.  So, the main posts will be about this large event, while we keep an eye on the action in the $1,500 in case anything truly fascinating kicks off.

And of course we're most concerned about our new friend  Bhupinder Kohli - Bhups made Day Two with about 9 big blinds, and was telling us that he would be making a double-or-bust move early on.  Sadly we were crawling down the freeway at said early point, and I'm just about to go and look for him now.  But I thought I should let the blondeites know that Bhups is truly hardcore - at 1:45am LV time yesterday, they'd bagged the chips and we were thinking about rushing down for the 2am tourney at Binions.  OK, I'd already decided that was a good idea.  But when Mr. Kohli overheard said plan, he insisted on coming along.
"If there are only a couple of tables it will be over by 4:30.  That's at least six hours sleep."
"You should go to bed."
"No."
"OK."

Anyway, it was a very entertaining small hours mini-tourney, with much merriment, a little beer and final table appearances by said Day Two-er and MadYank (who'd busted my KK with his Q 10 and given me a nice chance to rest on the rail).  In any case, we hope his enthusiasm hasn't made the second day of the $1,500 even more daunting.

ooh ooh, we haven't had any quizzes today.

Okay, tell us how many chip John Gayle's got.

Pink = 500
Black = 100
Green = 25

Starting chips were 2,500 and play started at 2pm (2 hours ago), so that should give you an idea to how Mr Gayle is fairing.

And here's our British hero himself - after letting me in on his secret game plan ("Within two rounds, just move in blind if there's an opening") he did exactly that.  The rocklike image many have of him may well be lying in rubble after he pushed blind with what turned out to be A9 and got called by Tens.  He spiked the Ace though, and is still in on the last nine tables...  And all this after only three hours sleep!

The players are on a short break at the moment, but I managed to catch Mr Hewston on his way to the loo.

He says he's doubled his starting stack due to a variety of small hands rather than 1 big one.

After winning 60k+ the other day, Roland De Wolf is in good spirits overall, but not too chuffed about the beat that knocked him back down to his starting stack.

K-K v A-Q

Stud $5,000 Event

Just thought I'd bring you a mini photo gallery from the Stud event being played next door (but in the same mammoth hall, of course) to the Hold'em - there's quite a high proportion of big names in this event, as it is one of the smallest fields around this year, being both now a 'niche' game and rather on the expensive side.  Here are my first shots - showing the full range of Poker Face, from grumpy Kirill Gerasimov (he's not really, he's rather nice) to grinning Jennifer Harman...

Among them is A Mr John Shipley, who final tabled earlier on in the week.

He's currently on 4,400

This is the charasmatic Steve Zoine, who came second to Cloutier in one of last year's bracelet Events.

Cloutier won 600k plus that day, yet, according to Steve, spent 200k of it on the craps... on the same night! EEEEEK!

Anyhow, here he is telling the table an amusing anecdote about a player who managed to strike a deal for a chop (before final cards were dealt) even though he was drawing dead. Now that's pretty impressive deal-making - even Paul Parker would have trouble talking someone into that 1.

He's sitting on (not literally of course) a pretty healthy 12,925

$1,500 Day Two

And Bhups is OUT!  57th spot not bad - several thousand and the satisfaction of playing through 2126 entrants... he did exactly what he was planning while on the last break - just moved in his 17k (having looked at one card - a Jack) and found an insta-call to his left, followed by a button re-raise all-in.  Oops.  Former called with Ac Ad, latter had busted himself, as it turns out, with Qd Qh.  Bhups' actual hand was AJ - a hand he would have moved with if he'd seen the lot at that stage, but the Aces crushed both of the smaller stacks and he can go and have a nap.  Or play cash.

Mickey lost a very large pot early on (to Chris Bigler, I think) when he got to see a flop with his big blind Qc 3d.  The flop:  Qs 3h 4c.
He bet the pot, and was called.  Turn: 7d  and again.
River: 6c.  Mickey just bet out 500 into the 2000+ pot, and received a call by the rivered set of Sixes!

And here's successful Stud competitor Andy Black (I like his jacket - intriguing to those who don't know who he is, perhaps intimidating to those who do?).  I've seen people come for his autograph on two separate occasions - in fact the only times I've seen Mr. Black, a guy has been handing him some kind of signing device...

Phil Hellmuth is OUT.

He made a short trip to the Table of Doom, shaking the hands of those he considered 'rookie's, before exiting within 10 minutes.

He limped on the button with K-9, Sexton raised the big blind with A-Q, Hellmuth moved all-in (?!) and Sexton called.

King on flop, but River brought Sexton a flush.

The Table of Doom gets even Doomier as I find out that one of the guys I assumed was a 'rookie', was in fact renowned online player John 'Decision' Hansmeyer from Canada.

This is his first WSOP comp, but what a table! They were all discussing who was going to replace Hellmuth, and within moments, TJ CLoutier sat down!

John's currently on 5,500

Daniel Negreanu eliminates an American Mateyboy.

All-in preflop.

MB = 5h 5c

Negreanu = Kd Kh

(second time he has found pocket kings - first one brought him a flopped set)

Board = Jh Td Qs 8h 3c

Negreanu's up to 19,250

Tony Chessa raises preflop, MB next door calls.

Flop = 8s Kc Jc

Chessa moves all-in for 825, last hand before the break.

MB takes an age to call, even though he only has about 500 left. (I am unsure as to why he didn't reraise preflop if was going to play the hand)

Eventually, he folds, leaving Chessa to flip over pocket Kings.

No idea what MB had, thought tens at first, but surely he'd reraise preflop with such a small stack.

Howard Lederer got in all-in with Tens, Cloutier had Queens (which held up), and Chessa folded Jacks.

Just 26 left in the $1,500 No Limit Hold 'Em Freezout.

Padraig Parkinson is comfortable on 150k, Rob Hollink less so with 75k. Average is around 100.

It's been a day of wind-up and gullability (I must be tired)

First Mad Marty convinced me that he used to be a tennis coach in Austalia.

And now Padraig had me believing that a deal was offered with 26 left. Chessa laughed at me, but what's so unbelievable about that?? I offer a chop as soon as the first player is out.

I got Chessa back though. Pointing the camera in hsi direction I told him that I couldn't get a good shot.

"Why not? Is it the light?"

"No, it's cos you're in it!" I replied.

His response can't be repeated here...

He didn't seem too keen to tell me how he managed to get attached to his K-4.

Mr. Texas has the large tower thing going again (picture coming if I can sneak one) - perhaps I was ungenerous in my 28k estimate - the megatower is the most tricky form to count... Anyway, he just benefitted from Kc Kd against Qh Qd.  I'm not sure what he was getting at when he told me, "the King came on the flop, but then...a Queen came!" but he seems happy.

Some of our Brummie viewers out there may recognise the name Stephen Ayeung (sp?), an Asian player who frequents the Walsall and Broadway Casinos.

Well, when I first started playing at Grosvenor Walsall, I recall Stephen having a dispute with a player at the table who didn't believe his 'I named the Devilfish' claim.

Stephen tried to ring the Devilfish on his mobile to prove his claim, but Dave wasn't in. Anyhow, a few other players backed up Stephen's claim and the non-believer finally conceded defeat.

Judging by this T-Shirt, Stephen's determined to cement the claim and avoid any future disputes. What he needs is an audio tape of Devilfish confirming that Mr Ayeung named him.

$1,500 News

Padraig Parkinson is in the last 16!  I arrived just in time to see Matey 1's 10 5 bust Matey 2's AK... Matey 2 was pretty resigned, just uttering those words which sum up a lifetime of bad beats (your way and others'): "That's poker."

Anyway, Padraig has 70,000 odd and looks confident - he's actually got a pretty good stare.  When he picked up a pot preflop, there was a cheer of "Go the Irish!" from the substantial rail.

Both the $1,500 NL and the $1,500 PL are munching on a Kit Kat.

Still just two tables left in the former, with Padraig Parkinson running pretty well with 130k.

Meanwhile, in the PL, there are 8 tables of 68 players remaining with the Average Stack being 20,661. This may be the last level coming up.

$5,000 Stud

While everyone else is on a break, the Stud has seen a flurry of eliminations; I think they're down to just three tables, and I last saw both Andy Black and Garry Bush heading for the exit.  The latter made that international across-the-throat sign of the bust, and said "I was 25th or something.  And unlucky."

MB raised with K-Q, Julian reraised with A-7, MB put him all in, and Julian called.

Iwan Jones -- 30.5k

And by the sounds of it, the Aussie fanbase are here in full force, loud and proud.

They're here, they love beer, get used to it!

OK, before I go and stand behind the spectators (who are thinning somewhat) I would like to share with you what it's like to stand outside by the smoking area/food tent during a break in one of these comps.  There is a flood of poker noise, so you just hear:
"And then I pick up pocket fives..."
"This donkey raises in late position.."
"I value bet the turn..."
"I'm totally short stacked..."
"Goddam Ace comes on the river..."
"I'm up about 5k..."
"I'm down about 5k..."
"It was such a sick beat..."

You get the idea.  But mingled in I heard this odd set of phrases: "Mosquitoes are scary, super scary...and when those monkeys steal the car..."  Sometimes it's great to just sit and let it all sweep over you.  In fact, out I go.

Hewston is sat next to Negreanu. Both are struggling. Hewston has 10k, Negreanu just 6k. Across the table from them is the confident figure of Citrone, who appears to be on around the 30k mark.

Meanwhile, we've hit bubble time in the $1,500. Padraig Parkinson and Paul McKinney are seated at that final table.

And poor Paul McKinney takes the dreaded bubble position in the $1,500 NLH F/O

I was really willing this fella to make the final, it's awesome to see guys of his age competing with the youngsters in these huge fields.

On a happier note, that means that Irishman Padraig Parkinson has made the final!

Last level (I think) of the $1,500 Pot Limit, everyone's made the money and have Cheshire Cat grins, especially John 'Decision' Hansmeyer, who's playing in his first ever WSOP Event.

54 left I think I heard the announcer say.

John Gale -- 80k

Richard 'Squelch' Redmond loses a is down to 30k after losing a pot that would have shot him into a potential chip lead.

Redmond raises preflop with Q-Q, MB calls.

Flop = 2-3-6

Redmond check raises the guy all-in, he calls with 5-5 and spikes a third 5 on the river.

Just witnessed John Shipley's stack being sliced in half.

MB raises from the button, John reraised from the big blind, and MB moves all-in for his last 19k.

About 20k in the pot, John thinks and thinks and thinks, then thinks a little bit more before moving into a final thinkathon... and then calls with Ac 9c

MB flips Ahrt Th

Board = 4s 2s 8d 8c Ad

The Brits are suddenly dropping like flies.

Shipley is also OUT.

Big hit came with the A-9 v A-T hand, but it was a classic coinflip that finished him off, A-K v Q-Q (no help arrived).

As a fellow Solihullian (there aren't too many of us in the World), I was disappointed to see him go. He's a nice chap to boot.

Just spoke to him, and he seemed quietly devestated, cursing his lack of patience with just 20-30 minutes to go.

"That's what I always do," claimed a somber Shipley.

I think he'll win one of these bracelets soon...

Brits:

Richard 'Squelch' Redmond
Carlo Citrone
Iwan Jones
John Gayle

Others:

Daniel Negreanu
John 'Decision' Hansmeyer
Joe Hachem

Not to mention Padraig Parkinson who made it thorugh to tomorrow's $1,500 PLH Final

Just spoke to a rather fatigued Carlo Citrone (calm it, ladies!), who's finished the day with 20k.

"I don't know how that John Gale does it, every comp I see him in he's got a anal excrement-load (he used a different word) of chips."

"I've been played well this Series, cashing in a few Events, but I keep getting anally probed (he used a different word) at crucial moments"

He continued, "If I can win one of these Events, I'll be flying. It just takes one."

He then went on to tell me about three bad beats at the Bellagio where he lost a massive stack to the same guy, all three times he held K-K, and all three times he was outdrawn. If he can avoid that sort of bad luck tomorrow, he should be in with a good shout.

He agreed with me that it probably isn't a good idea to get too clever with hands. It's okay trapping and getting all-in with big hands, but sooner or later, especially in a field this side, you're gonna get that monster hand busted. No need to play too cute, just taking a few extra chips and adding to your stack gradually is a worthwhile strategy.

They stacked em, counted em and bagged em... and we're done.

I can't get my hands on the chip-counts just yet, so I'll have to stick em up tomorrow.

I did lean over the rail and get Richard Redmond's though, which read 31,500

I also noticed a guy called Robert Noopy (which is Brummie rhyming slang for 'snoopy' - sort of). He had 73,000. I like his name, so I think I'm gonna support him if all the Brits bite the dust.

Right, we're cream crackered, so time for bed (separately of course).

I overheard them say '3pm start' (is that 11pm your time?), so that's an extra hour in bed for the Jen/Snoopy team.

Also taking place tomorrow is the $1,500 NLH Final with Padraig Parkinson and Day 1 of the $5,000 short-handed, which I believe the likes of Paul 'Actionjack' Jackson, Paul 'badpab' Foltyn and Stuart 'Foxy' Fox are planning on playing.

Obviously, we can't do everything at once, so our plan is to turn up at 3 for Day 2 of the Pot Limit, whilst keeping a firm eye on Padraig in the NL and the British contingent in the Short-handed (which I believe starts at 12pm)

So, I shall bid you farewell and see you all tomorrow.

Toodle pip  ;sleep;

$1,500

And here are the final two tables, from the best vantage point I could find.  Contrast and compare the photos the (much more talented, I am sure) guy with the proper camera must be getting.  Never mind, you can use your imagination - anybody know any of the other players?

Two of the players at the final table are very successful online players - Jordan 'imsolucky0' Morgan and Chris 'MarvinGarden' Birchby.
