More used to slow journeys on the Stratford Road, I never once thought I'd be stuck in traffic on Las Vegas Avenue or Frank Sinatra Drive. Anyhow, back to business. Today is Day 2 of the $1,500 No Limit Hold 'Em Freezout, but also that start of the $2,500 Pot Limit Hold 'Em Freezout too. As so many Europeans failed to make it the end of yesterday's play, we thought we'd keep an eye on the Pot Limit Event. Rumour has it that the likes of El Blondie, Tony Chessa, Marc Goowin and co are all playing, so it may be of more interest to you if our updates for today focused more on this Event. We're keeping an open mind. So, the main posts will be about this large event, while we keep an eye on the action in the $1,500 in case anything truly fascinating kicks off.
And of course we're most concerned about our new friend Bhupinder Kohli - Bhups made Day Two with about 9 big blinds, and was telling us that he would be making a double-or-bust move early on. Sadly we were crawling down the freeway at said early point, and I'm just about to go and look for him now. But I thought I should let the blondeites know that Bhups is truly hardcore - at 1:45am LV time yesterday, they'd bagged the chips and we were thinking about rushing down for the 2am tourney at Binions. OK, I'd already decided that was a good idea. But when Mr. Kohli overheard said plan, he insisted on coming along. "If there are only a couple of tables it will be over by 4:30. That's at least six hours sleep." "You should go to bed." "No." "OK." Anyway, it was a very entertaining small hours mini-tourney, with much merriment, a little beer and final table appearances by said Day Two-er and MadYank (who'd busted my KK with his Q 10 and given me a nice chance to rest on the rail). In any case, we hope his enthusiasm hasn't made the second day of the $1,500 even more daunting. Just thought I'd bring you a mini photo gallery from the Stud event being played next door (but in the same mammoth hall, of course) to the Hold'em - there's quite a high proportion of big names in this event, as it is one of the smallest fields around this year, being both now a 'niche' game and rather on the expensive side. Here are my first shots - showing the full range of Poker Face, from grumpy Kirill Gerasimov (he's not really, he's rather nice) to grinning Jennifer Harman... Cloutier won 600k plus that day, yet, according to Steve, spent 200k of it on the craps... on the same night! EEEEEK! Anyhow, here he is telling the table an amusing anecdote about a player who managed to strike a deal for a chop (before final cards were dealt) even though he was drawing dead. Now that's pretty impressive deal-making - even Paul Parker would have trouble talking someone into that 1. And Bhups is OUT! 57th spot not bad - several thousand and the satisfaction of playing through 2126 entrants... he did exactly what he was planning while on the last break - just moved in his 17k (having looked at one card - a Jack) and found an insta-call to his left, followed by a button re-raise all-in. Oops. Former called with Ac Ad, latter had busted himself, as it turns out, with Qd Qh. Bhups' actual hand was AJ - a hand he would have moved with if he'd seen the lot at that stage, but the Aces crushed both of the smaller stacks and he can go and have a nap. Or play cash. It's been a day of wind-up and gullability (I must be tired) First Mad Marty convinced me that he used to be a tennis coach in Austalia. And now Padraig had me believing that a deal was offered with 26 left. Chessa laughed at me, but what's so unbelievable about that?? I offer a chop as soon as the first player is out. I got Chessa back though. Pointing the camera in hsi direction I told him that I couldn't get a good shot. "Why not? Is it the light?" "No, it's cos you're in it!" I replied. Well, when I first started playing at Grosvenor Walsall, I recall Stephen having a dispute with a player at the table who didn't believe his 'I named the Devilfish' claim. Stephen tried to ring the Devilfish on his mobile to prove his claim, but Dave wasn't in. Anyhow, a few other players backed up Stephen's claim and the non-believer finally conceded defeat. Judging by this T-Shirt, Stephen's determined to cement the claim and avoid any future disputes. What he needs is an audio tape of Devilfish confirming that Mr Ayeung named him. Padraig Parkinson is in the last 16! I arrived just in time to see Matey 1's 10 5 bust Matey 2's AK... Matey 2 was pretty resigned, just uttering those words which sum up a lifetime of bad beats (your way and others'): "That's poker." Anyway, Padraig has 70,000 odd and looks confident - he's actually got a pretty good stare. When he picked up a pot preflop, there was a cheer of "Go the Irish!" from the substantial rail. There is a flood of poker noise, so you just hear:
"And then I pick up pocket fives..." "This donkey raises in late position.." "I value bet the turn..." "I'm totally short stacked..." "Goddam Ace comes on the river..." "I'm up about 5k..." "I'm down about 5k..." "It was such a sick beat..." You get the idea. But mingled in I heard this odd set of phrases: "Mosquitoes are scary, super scary...and when those monkeys steal the car..." Sometimes it's great to just sit and let it all sweep over you. In fact, out I go. Hewston has 10k, Negreanu just 6k. Across the table from them is the confident figure of Citrone, who appears to be on around the 30k mark.

I was really willing this fella to make the final, it's awesome to see guys of his age competing with the youngsters in these huge fields. On a happier note, that means that Irishman Padraig Parkinson has made the final! Shipley is also OUT. Big hit came with the A-9 v A-T hand, but it was a classic coinflip that finished him off, A-K v Q-Q (no help arrived). As a fellow Solihullian (there aren't too many of us in the World), I was disappointed to see him go. He's a nice chap to boot. Just spoke to him, and he seemed quietly devestated, cursing his lack of patience with just 20-30 minutes to go. "That's what I always do," claimed a somber Shipley. I think he'll win one of these bracelets soon... Title: Re: $2,500 PLH (D1)/$1,500 NLH (D2) - Live Update - Interactive Post by: Trace on July 20, 2006, 10:26:28 AM who r they?? Hinge and Bracket. "I don't know how that John Gale does it, every comp I see him in he's got a anal excrement-load (he used a different word) of chips." "I've been played well this Series, cashing in a few Events, but I keep getting anally probed (he used a different word) at crucial moments" He continued, "If I can win one of these Events, I'll be flying. It just takes one." He then went on to tell me about three bad beats at the Bellagio where he lost a massive stack to the same guy, all three times he held K-K, and all three times he was outdrawn. If he can avoid that sort of bad luck tomorrow, he should be in with a good shout. He agreed with me that it probably isn't a good idea to get too clever with hands. It's okay trapping and getting all-in with big hands, but sooner or later, especially in a field this side, you're gonna get that monster hand busted. No need to play too cute, just taking a few extra chips and adding to your stack gradually is a worthwhile strategy. Title: Re: $2,500 PLH (D1)/$1,500 NLH (D2) - Live Update - Interactive Post by: snoopy1239 on July 20, 2006, 10:55:06 AM They stacked em, counted em and bagged em... and we're done.
I can't get my hands on the chip-counts just yet, so I'll have to stick em up tomorrow. I did lean over the rail and get Richard Redmond's though, which read 31,500 I also noticed a guy called Robert Noopy (which is Brummie rhyming slang for 'snoopy' - sort of). He had 73,000. I like his name, so I think I'm gonna support him if all the Brits bite the dust. Title: Re: $2,500 PLH (D1)/$1,500 NLH (D2) - Live Update - Interactive Post by: snoopy1239 on July 20, 2006, 11:01:42 AM Right, we're cream crackered, so time for bed (separately of course).
I overheard them say '3pm start' (is that 11pm your time?), so that's an extra hour in bed for the Jen/Snoopy team. Also taking place tomorrow is the $1,500 NLH Final with Padraig Parkinson and Day 1 of the $5,000 short-handed, which I believe the likes of Paul 'Actionjack' Jackson, Paul 'badpab' Foltyn and Stuart 'Foxy' Fox are planning on playing. Obviously, we can't do everything at once, so our plan is to turn up at 3 for Day 2 of the Pot Limit, whilst keeping a firm eye on Padraig in the NL and the British contingent in the Short-handed (which I believe starts at 12pm) So, I shall bid you farewell and see you all tomorrow. Give Squelchy a big pat on the back and tell him if there was no luck involved he'd win everything (until I get there on Saturday!).
