Morning.
Still feeling wrecked from yesterday, but I'll try & put a few lowlights & highlights up as promised, with a few random "off-table" jottings.
I was unbelievably excited to play this. Like all of us, Lockdown etc has intruded on our lives big time & I never thought I'd get to see Vegas again, let alone play another WSOP.
And yet here we are.
I also have to add that I SO enjoy live poker. I know it sounds daft, but after such a long absence, I await every single hand that is dealt with excitement & hope, squeeze all 4/5 cards one at a time & generally try to sit there like a proper player. And there's that indescribable buzz, that adrenalin surge when we hit a good flop or take down a decent pot. I've never done cocaine, or any drugs for that matter, but I'll be surprised if it can pack a better punch than winning a sizeable pot in a WSOP jobbie.
Of course the WSOP has a new home, & to be fair, once seated, it's very little different from The Rio. The big negative is getting there either on foot or by car, bearing in mind how convenient The Rio was in every way, especially car parking & the like.

My starting table companions.
Hefty fella to my left was a smashing guy, down from Michigan. Standing Up Bloke in Photo 2 was a perfect pain & the best player on the table. Surprisingly, all 6 table companions had departed before close of play.

I got chatting with one guy, who came from Vermont, which was quite a surprise, as almost nobody lives in Vermont, it's a super small State up in New England.
I was reading up on Vermont during a break, & we can use the Starbucks yardstick to see how big or small it is. There are 15,500 Starby's in the USA, with 2,500 of them in California. Vermont has exactly 4 (FOUR). In fact there are more Starby's in my Hotel (The Palazzo) than in the whole of Vermont. And still there's a 100 yard queue when they open at 6am every morning.
And the Vermont Wiki page has this wonderful statement, which it took me a while to grasp.....
The state capital is Montpelier, the least-populous state capital in the United States.
The most-populous city, Burlington,
is the least-populous city to be the most-populous city in a state

Levels 1 to 3
(There's a 15 minute break after every 3 levels).
Struck me as a little surprising that we played 15 x 40 minute levels without a meal break. That's 10 hours, plus 4 x 15 minute loo breaks = 11 hours straight. Guess it's not so bad for the kids, but it felt a long time to me. Must be a nightmare for diabetics though.
I actually won one & chopped another in the very first Orbit, after which the cards went super dead.
Seats 6 & 7 were in every pot, & whenever they got to showdown & we saw their cards they always had the goods. Meanwhile, me & Hefty Bloke from Michigan were totally card dead. Sometimes the game feels very unfair, but that's just our minds playing tricks.
Anyway, the blinds were miniscule, & there was no rush, so I just sat there quietly taking it all in & loving every moment.
And then this hand came along....
I'm dealt.....
Raise it up, two callers.
And we see this flop...
What a beauty, so I check & it goes BET - RAISE.
Hmm.
We are 3 way, & I have all the best draws. Feels better to try & keep them all in, so I just call & so does the other player. Big pot now.
Turn is an offsuit K.
I check, it goes check bet. Can't fold this, so I call & so does the other fella.
River is a club & pairs the Q.
FFS, how did I miss that lot?
So I check & the aggressor pots it & we have to fold.
Now I realise my 25,000 starting has become round 15,000.

Two more pots go south, & so at the first break I'm looking at a 12,000 stack from 25,000 starting.
I felt pretty miserable about it to be honest, fancy waiting 3 years to come back to Vegas & busting early doors. And, of course, at the back of my mind was the decision not to take a spare bullet. I could end up looking pretty silly here.
Eventually I gave myself a good talking to & decided if it's going to go tits up at least make a fight of it.
Fortunately, the Poker Gods decided to give Hefty Bloke & me some decent material.
End of Level 3 12,000.

Levels 4, 5 & 6
The blinds here are very gentle, in fact they barely change.
Limit Levels in 4, 5 & 6 were;
300-500
300-600
300-600
Pot Limit Levels were....
200 - 300 + 300 Ante
200 - 300 + 300 Ante
200 - 300 + 300 Ante
So although we have a whole arsenal of excuses ready, don't think we can ever blame the structure.

Levels 4, 5 & 6
After I gave myself a talking to, the cards became much more amenable, & these were my best 3 levels by far.
Lots of action, & I'm struggling to remember it all & the sequence, but I go from 12,000 up to 60,000 in the space of one level.
First I SCOOP with A-2-6-8 on a 7-9-10 flop which earns me 7,000, then in a near identical spot I get a 2 way chop in a 3 way pot for a bit of profit.
Next I boat up with A-3-5-5 on the 2-7-K-5-7 board, he has Kings full but I get the Low for another chop.
The big one was my....
We see this flop....
I bet, fella re-pots it & suddenly we are all-in. Really surprised to see his hand, he has no low at all & a (dead) Spade draw with...
So he's on the straight draw & a dead spade draw. LIKE.
I'm ahead on the turn but still have to swerve some outs, but a beautiful deuce rivers to give me 2-2-2 & a lovely 46,000 SCOOPIO.
Then a shortie raises & I set him in, & we bust him to breach the 60,000 mark. Boy, after the fiasco of the first 3 levels did that feel good.

My sequence might be a bit out, but around this time I get TWO mentions on the WSOP Live Update.
Kendall Making Progress
Pot Limit Omaha 8 or Better
The hijack bet 800 and was called in the cutoff by British poker legend Tony "Tikay" Kendall.
The hijack bet 1,000 on a flop of
and was called by Kendall.
The
on the turn was checked by both players and the
encouraged Kendall to bet 4,000 on the river. The hijack threw their cards in the muck and the former Sky Poker Grandad adds to his stack.
Tony Kendall 60,300
Former Sky Poker Grandad? Do they know something I don't? I mean, it's all just schmaltz, but ngl, it was clearly affectionate & I much enjoyed it, perhaps more than I should.
Then....
Kendall Chips Up
With 8,000 in the middle on a flop of
the big blind bet 3,000 and was called by Tony Kendall in the cutoff.
The
paired the board on the turn and the big blind bet 3,000 which once again was called by Kendall.
The
completed the board and the big blind opted to check. Kendall mounted the pressure and bet 17,000 which was enough to put the big blind all in. The big blind however elected to fold and Kendall took the pot.
Tony Kendall 57,800 -2,500
That's actually not quite right as the board never paired but it's near enough.
Then, in the end of day round up, I officially became a member of the British Old School.
The British old-school was well represented in the field, with Hendon Mob's Barny Boatman bagging 135,500, Tony Kendall advanced to Day 2 with 31,000, while Stephen Morsechi ended the evening with 89,500.

Levels 7 onwards.
The cards went super cold again & I just drooled & dribbled down & down.
Eventually I've somehow gone down to 19,000 without doing too much either right or wrong.
Desperate now, I get into a 4 way Limit Pot, & by the time the river arrives I've got about 10,000 left & no real hand, & a fella makes it 5,000, with the other two folding. I'm getting a great price but I only have an emergency low & a pair of Fives. Can't really fold though, so I have to call, he announces "nut low & a pair of twos", and miraculously, I get half with my pair of fives. Not exactly a hero call but I did have to clench the old butt cheeks.
That took me to 36,000 & I pretty much shut up shop then as no spots came up.

So I'm in a world of pain today, but you never know.
Limit Blinds will start at 2,000 - 4,000, with the Pot Limit Blinds at 1,000 - 2,000 with a 2,000 BB Ante. No room for limping then, just gotta be brave & try & reraise in a Pot Limit round.
As it happens, my table today is probably just about perfect, as even my puny 31,000 is enough to make their eyes water considering their stack sizes are;
73,000
66,000
56,000
50,000
31,000 (moi)
19,000
51,000
Play resumes at 2pm local, 10pm UK.
I'm a long shot to last the first level, but a quick 2XUp would make a world of difference. What will be will be.
A weird up & down day, but a great experience & I enjoyed every minute.
