Hello, and welcome back to the Walsall GUKPT sponsored by BlueSquare.com. Initially, I wondered if I'd even be writing this message, as when Day 1A drew to a close, I found out that I'd left my lights on all day thus leaving me with a dead battery. Why my lights would be on in the first place is beyond me seeing as I arrived in daylight, so I ultimately decided that someone must have broken into my car just to turn my lights on. Ahem.

Nevertheless, I required assistance which came in a number of forms. First I found some jump leads courtesy of Pete Leper, but for some reason they didn't work with his car. Then I asked Sam (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1429) Trickett (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1429) to help, and he duly drove his car round but couldn't seem to find his battery. Next up was James (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=183) Akenhead (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=183), who drove up next door. "Have you ever jumped a car?" I asked. "Nah," he replied. "Shit, me neither, what do we do?" "Dunno."

Whilst James fiddled around his bonnet looking for the battery (honestly, I bet neither of us could wire a plug either), I searched for someone who had 'the look' (which pretty much cancels out any poker player under the age of 25) and found aid in Darren (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=88) Grosvenor (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=88) (click the link and tell me if you agree he looks like a 'car person'). With James and I inexperienced in getting our hands dirty, Darren showed us where to connect the leads, and so eventually we got it going.

After Darren raced back inside, James and I were still confused. "Do I need to leave the engine on before we remove the leads?" I asked James. "Not sure, I don't want to get electrocuted," he replied. "But won't the engine just stop if we take the leads out before the battery has had a chance to recharge," I continued. "Will it not just cut out at the traffic lights or something?"

In the end, us real men got the job done, and after taking off the leads, the engine restarted no problems and I was able to get back to Solihull, although frustratingly later than expected. I still have Peter's jump leads, but let's just pray the car works in the morning as I don't have another car to jump start it if it doesn't. Either way, if I'm not updating tomorrow, you'll know why - because I'm an idiot who left his lights on all day.

Hello, I'm here. My car started, but it's making loud screeching noises, much like when Dana tells me off for being naughty. They seem to come and go, and mainly sound when I'm dropping down in gears, but still, the noise scares me and I wear a tasting-mustard face every time it screeches. Nevertheless, the car seems to run okay despite the noise, and I have indeed made it to the Grosvenor casino for Day 1B of this week's main event. Let battle commence!

Players are now taking their seats and like Linford Christie in the starting blocks, are braced and ready for action, although facing a marathon rather than a sprint. They're probably less endowed too.

They're just going through the new rules now:

(1) The worst hand wins the pot at all times
(2) Dena must tournament direct in a bikini
(3) Updaters must be tipped by the winner at the end of the tournament

And they're off! Well, they're not going off home, or anything, just off, as in started... oh, you know what I mean.

And within just a few hands, we lose our first man, Keir Ratcliff. With the flop reading 3d 5d Ahrt, all the chips flew in with Mark Wilson's 5s 5h looking to dodge a few bullets against Ratcliff's 4d 2d. The Qd would have had Wilson begrudging his luck and grumbling about how bad he runs, but the 3h saved his bacon and served up a very early double up indeed.

Ken Wong was also spotted exiting the tournament area. Nobody caught the hand, but it did trigger the tired old gag. "I think that's Ken who's gone, could be Wong though." Groan.

We haven't seen him for a while due to personal issues, but he's back, Sir Johnny 'Texas' Hewston back playing the UK circuit and looking to emulate a good score earlier on this week. Now the Charles Dickens of poker, word on the street is that 'Texas' has a book coming out soon, so keep an eye out for that one. Could be an interesting read.

Con Cronin, who was the final alternate, was in for about five or ten minutes before becoming yet another early elimination. He came, he saw, he didn't conquer.

Willie Tann is also out. I seemed to have developed a nasty habit of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, so I didn't witness his demise first hand. However, I did have a crowbar on hand, so could prise the dirty details from the players he's left behind. Apparently, Tann had A-Q versus 9-9 on a 9-Q-x flop, a queen on the turn making it difficult for Tann to get away.

It's been a good start for Francis McCormack. With the board reading 3h Kd Ahrt 4s Jc, he bet 1,500 on the end and was duly called by Stephen Brown. McCormack's Aspades 8s was good enough to take the pot, and Brown mucked his hand.

Also enjoying a prosperous start is Neil Channing. His bet of 2,800 on a Qs Jh 6s 3h Kd was enough to lap up a nice pot. "I am strong, you're not wrong," declared Channing as he showed Ahrt Ks.

Our hero and saviour Graham Wheldon was just faced with a tricky decision. With Ryan Fronda limping under-the-gun, Wheldon raised it up to 500 from the button with pocket queens, only for Mojid Khan (big blind) and Fronda to both call. On the 6d 3h 5h, Khan came out firing for 600, which both players flat-called. After the 9c turn had hit the felt, Khan led for 1,500 and Fronda pushed all in for circa 5,750. With the action halted on Wheldon, he looked to his left, and eventually folded, but may have been disappointed to see Khan quickly fold behind him. In the aftermath, Fronda claimed to have Th 7h for the flush and straight draw.

"It was an interesting hand really. He raised it up to 375 and I called with A-T. He checked the A-Q-T flop, and I thought something was up so I checked behind. On the ten turn, he bet 600, I raised to 1,700 and he called. The river came a nightmare card, the queen, and he led for 2,200. I guess I could have folded really, but I called and he had A-Q. After that, I doubled up with aces versus A-K. I'm now on 12,000."

Haven't heard too much from rooks. It's a bit dark around the tables here at Grosvenor, but it looks like he has around 11 or 12,000.

Raffaele De Martino and the less elaborately named Peter Evans just chopped one up with aces squared, all the chips rocketing in on the queen high flop. De Martino was free-rolling with a backdoor flush draw, but the turn and river were both blanks.

Also on that table is Karl Mahrenholz, who could well be your current chip leader with 28,000.

Damn, I wasn't 100%, hence the 'I think', but he said hello to me outside the casino so I thought it must be him. Do they look similar?

Rupinder Bedi now has what looks to be around the 18,000 region. With a 6c 3c 5h waiting patiently on the felt, David La Ronde took a first stab at the pot, Bedi made it 4,800 and Waseem Shahid pushed all in. I don't think it was much more, as once La Ronde side-stepped out of the way, cards were quickly revealed, Bedi in need of improvement with 5c 4d versus Ks Kh. And, of course, improvement did indeed arrive, in the shape of a 2h turn which was pursued by a 9s river.

No - but ironically if it snaps you will soon have another flat battery!

Spray some WD40 on it to alleviate the squeeking in the short term -  - if it is just loose - tightening is a 5 minute job requiring 2 spanners, if it is worn a new one is less that £15  -maybe 40 to get it replaced my a mechanic

Clearly in a rage, Fronda ranted for a good few minutes and, at one point, even blew steam from his ears like an old fashioned kettle. "That's cheating in my book."

"That's terrible," added Graham Wheldon. "He got right up to the coffee machine," said Paul Gourlay.

Nevertheless, no ruling was called, and Johnson raked in the pot, although he remained silent thereafter whilst the rest of the table grumbled amongst each other and continued to accuse Johnson of severely bad sportsmanship.

Paul Gourlay's still in, with 16,500, although he did recently lose a pot to neighbour and update sponsor Graham Wheldon when his bet of 1,500 on the river of a 4h 6c 7c Jd 3d board was raised to 3,500. Gourlay folded like a cheap suitcase.

As I wandered around the back of the room, I couldn't help but notice that we were missing a veteran of the game in the shape of 'Bandit' Peter Evans. According to my secret source, he had a queen high flush draw, which made it on the turn, but also gave his opponent a straight flush. The final chips went in on the river, and the Bandit was gone.

Paul Zimbler also left us earlier. With Jeff Kimber raising it up preflop and Andy Luca calling on the button, Zimbler felt like this was a good opportunity to squeeze with Ac 9c, and so pushed all in from the big blind. "Jeff's got a wide range there," said Zimbler afterward. "I think there's a good chance he'll fold." But, alas, it wasn't Kimber who Zimbler needed to worry about, as Luca was sitting pretty with Kc Kd, and duly made the call. The 5c 9h 6h 5h 4d board was of no use, and the Marbella Kid was out.

Dwayne Stacey has doubled through with A-J versus A-9 on a subsequent 5-2-6-7-T board. He still only has 5,000 though.

Chip leader Farhad Afshin Kia has dropped slightly to 72,000. On a 9c Qc Th 4h board he check-called 6,000, before folding to a 4,150 all in on the Aspades river. He showed Qh 8h to assure his opponent, and the rest of the table, that he had something worth chasing.

I seem to recall someone requesting a count for Tam MacDonald earlier. Well, if Tam equals Thomas, then the chap seated here next to Vince Calenti should be our man. He's currently on 54,000, most, if not all, of his chips coming from an aggressive player who called bets on every street of a 2-4-5-2 board before raising on the king river. His timing on this occasion, however, was wayward, as MacDonald had A-2 and quickly made the call, which was easily enough to beat 6-4 which had ultimately been turned into a very expensive bluff.

Speaking of Vince, he's not very popular after eliminating the "norkage at the table". He did have aces though, so I think he can be forgiven.

Stuart Rutter is on 10,000. Don't worry though, folks, despite the lack-lustre count, he has been playing hands, in fact doubling up from 5,000 not too long ago with A-Q versus Mad Turk's J-T suited on a rainbow 2-3-9-K-7 board.

There's somewhat of a debate going down on Table 6 as to the odds of Mickey Wernick exiting a GUKPT before the first break (end of level two). Not surprisingly, Neil Channing is involved, and I think it was eventually agreed that 15 to 1 was about right. If you'd have taken a punt on him today, however, you would have lost your money, as The Worm is still plugging away with 12,000.

Paul Gourlay limped for 400 with Ks 8s, Alan Stearn raised to 1,200 and, after two other players had called, Gourlay also joined the party and threw in the extra 800. After the 2s Kc 3h flop had been checked around, Gourlay bet 2,500 on the Ts turn and 4,500 on the Aspades river. Stearn called both times, but soon mucked when he saw his opponent's nutty hand. "Ah," he groaned. "You've hit the flush on the river. How can I put you on the flush?" "He called instantly," Paul whispered to me. "I should have just gone all in." Nevertheless, Rocket Man took down the pot is now back up to 21,000 as a result.

We're currently coming to the end of a ten minute break, but just before they dispersed from the tables, Graham Wheldon found his newly acquired stack across the line against 'Mad Turk' Yucel Eminoglu. Most of the action took place preflop, Wheldon opening for 1,200, Turk making it 5,000, Wheldon 15,000 and Turk calling. On the 2c 7s 6h flop, Wheldon open-shoved for around 30,000, thus leaving Turk with a decision for his tournament life and, potentially, the biggest pot of the night. "You know what," said Turk as he loomed over the table, "I'm going to lay this down, but I swear to God I'm going to get your chips next time. You're a f***ing bluffer." After claiming he had kings, Wheldon replied, "You didn't have kings." "I had f***ing kings," repeated Turk. "Every time you raise I'm going to come over the top. I promise. I'm going to get your chips."

Wheldon now on 75,000.

Asmat Ashgar is out. On a 7c 8h 6d three-way flop, he check-raised David Lloyd's 5,000 bet all in for an additional 8,475. Lacking a big stack himself, Lloyd rose from his seat (a seated position must hinder the decision making process) and mulled over his options. After about a minute in the think tank, he made the call with Jh Jd. Ashgar tabled Ks Qd, and failed to improve on the 8c turn and 2c river.

You know, what you'd expect really: stack not too different from last time (18,000), a face like a smacked bottom, and a tired posture that suggests he has been courting all week.

An amusing hand took place on Table 6. With multiple limpers before him, one of whom was Neil Channing, Simon Wickenden moved all in for what appeared to be around 5,000. The action found its way back to Channing, who clearly had something to chew on, but feared he might be dominated. "Are we racing?" he asked. "Does it feel like we're racing?" "I think I have two over cards." "I'll be very happy if I'm racing." "You seem very relaxed about it all."

Although on the receiving end of the Spanish Inquisition, Wickenden remained clam under questioning and conceded little. Perhaps frustrated not to have garnered more information, Channing folded pocket eights. You could tell that he was eager to see his opponent's hole cards, but Wickenden was having none of it and simply smirked as he mucked his hand. However, as he threw in his hand, the cards hit the arm of the dealer and flipped over to reveal Big Slick, and all that Fonz-like coolness that Wickenden had showcased previously simply vanished in the matter of seconds, much to the amusement of the rest of the table and your blogger who had been watching intently.

Tom Nightingale is out, although he was poker and prodded by the Poker Gods prior to his exit. All in with Q-T versus the A-9 of Paul Gourlay, Nightingale spiked top pair on a Q-5-8, but ultimately lost out to an seven turn and six river for a runner runner straight. Gourlay was similarly short-stacked, however, and so only jumps up to 19,000.

Initially missing, presumed lost, brother Tom confirmed the demise of Stuart Rutter. Just to elaborate on the Gourlay/Turk hand, it was all in preflop, Mad Turk making the final call with Jd Jh. Gourlay had Ad Kh. "Keep it nice and high," requested Gourlay, and although it was nice and high, it wasn't quite high enough as the first card out was the knave. The Jc 4d 8c had Gourlay praying for a flush draw, and he got his wish as the turn came 7d. "Diamond" exclaimed Gourlay, emulating the annoying insurance advert. "No diamond," repsonded Turk, not emulating the annoying insurance advert. In the end, it was the latter who triumphed, the Qh giving him the pot, and Rocket Man the door.

Certainly. He has 30,500 and is currently sharing a table with Neil Blatchley, Alan Vinson, Martino Libertini and Ved Madan.

Yucel Eminoglu limped under-the-gun, another two players limped, but Paul Parker was far from hospitable, pushing all in for 12,500 from the big blind. Eminoglu called and the other two players folded.

As a result, Rupinder has taken a dent or two in his bonnet and is now down to 30,000.

Players are now on a ten minute break.

Sunny Chattha raised to 2,400 from UTG+1 and Jeff Sharpe flat called in the big blind. On a 3d 6d 9h flop, Sharpe checked, Chattha bet, Sharpe pushed and Chattha called.

9c turn and 5d river later and Jeff makes a Sharpe exit.
