Reading the coffee stuff reminded me of when I was at Ascot races at the start of the year.
A guy went up to the bar and asked for a bloody mary.
"Sorry sir, we don't have any" was the reply from the barman.
"Oh, can I have a vodka & tomato juice then? And a splash of worcester sauce too?" the guy asked.
"Certainly sir"
Much rolling of eyes & suppressed giggles from the rest of us standing at the bar.

I don't give a single card or pressie at Xmas to anyone, no exceptions, & when I receive them, instead of happiness, I feel huge embarrassment.
Christmas decs at home? Lol. I used to be too scared of "public opinion" not to, but that's long passed, sod that, there'll be no decorations in my house, ever ever ever.
Does that make me selfish, or unkind? Not one bit. I slleep fine at night, tyvm. It just means I'm not a practising Christian, & I don't buy the commercial exploitation of a religious Event.
Erm, I think you'll find that the event held at this time of year, now generally called 'xmas' was around well before the story of Jesus and his pals was created.
It's NOT a Christian/religious event, it's a public holiday that has been massively commercialised. But it's not a religious event than has been commercially exploited.

I went to the Deep in Hull, one of the largest aquariums in the world (I think, it was quite good actually) and ordered a latte, they gave me a black coffee, I said I wanted milk in my latte and they said, 'oh you have to ask for milk'.
Quite right. It's ridic that if you think that getting coffee and milk is acceptable when ordering a latte. Latte is supposed to be espresso with milk. For some reason quite a few places indeed make it coffee with milk and call it a latte...IT'S NOT, IT'S A FECKING COFFEE WITH MILK! Ask for coffee with milk please!
Well, technically a latte is just milk - I think Latte Machiatto (not sure of spelling) is milk with a touch of coffee
It would have been more accurate, and funnier, if they'd just given you a mug of milk
I also think that coffee shop employees must have a radar for all the grumpy old men, because I've used whatever description I've most felt like in any and every coffee shop I've been in and I've never had any queries as to whether I mean venti or Americano rather than large or black coffee for example.

There are a lot of events at all times of the year and some coincide. The mid winter solistice doesn't get celebrated much these days. The event that we celebrate is the birth of the son of god, hence the name Christmas, and as a nation purporting to be Christian we celebrate it as a public holiday.
and yes, it has got quite commercial.

You might be celebrating someone's birth, but but not everyone is. Yes, it might be called xmas, but it's far removed from a religious festival for the majority. Halloween is meant to be a religious festival as well, I don't think many consider it as one.

Its only removed for those that wish it to be.
Halloween isn't really celebrated much as a Christian festival really. Its more of a dressing up game for children and Americans

Tikay - with there being such a VAST difference in our ages I don't always agree with everything you say/like/dislike BUT on the whole theme of christmas and decorations, I am with you 100% of the way!
I could easily write a novel on my feelings of disdain for the whole festive period, its present meaning, relevance and general wrongness of people spending to the max on absolute shite when come new year they will barely afford to pay their mortgages or even make a dent on credit cards for many moons to come.......
The reason for my rare post though is to get something off my chest that I have been struggling with now for the last 2 weeks. I haven't put a single decoration up in my house for 5 years now and was very happy with that fact. Your home is your castle an all that seeing as I can't change what is going on in the outside world short of setting fire to Grantham High Street! (not the worst idea I have ever had).
So this year, sadly due to the fact that I am the only family member with a huge double oven and space enough for 15 people to stuff their faces on Christmas Day, I will be the host. Now this congregation is purely my immediate family and the whole of Glenn's family. So from 15 people only 2 of these are children, my 2 mental nephews who are 6 and 10. So purely for their benefit I have put up a tree, found some crappy tinsel from my pre-soap box days, gone to the cheapest "we'll sell any old duff and we know you will buy it because it's Christmas" shop and through gritted teeth handed over cash for 4 more decorations.
Help me out here, ever since I have done this I have felt "dirty." I sleep at night purely for the fact that I don't want to push my so called "extreme" views on 2 kids but trust me the moment they reach 16 they are getting full barrells from their Auntie on my beliefs and views on this world. If they don't agree with me then absolutely fine they can trundle through life living as much of a sheep life as they desire, I will still love them.
I am so anti-christmas, anti-relegion, anti-tradition, anti establishment bla bla the list could go on and on but I really am trying to keep this short lol. I guess I am having a rant at someone because I hate to conform and even for the sake of keeping things "normal" for 2 innocent kids, I feel violated, a hypocrit and above all guilty for straying off course in my beliefs.
You may just think WTF its just a few decorations but it is so so much more than that.
(steps of box and breathes)
You have complete disdain for the current trashy Xmas theme, and because you have passionate anti-establishment views you enjoy being independent of all that stuff. But how independant are you? If you want to be properly independant you can't allow it to affect your emotions. Because getting very pissed off about something means it is in some way in control of you, and that is not being very successful at defeating the thing you disdain. The trashy Xmas is forcing you to be very anti trashy Xmas, so it is actually controlling your attitude around this time of year. You are free to have whatever attitude you want to Dec 25th. So I think a good way to defeat the spending on shite you can't afford irritant is to be generous with your time, because that is something that's free. Giving your time to your whole family by hosting a dinner on one day is something you prob want to embrace. Giving people you love an enjoyable day is a good anti-trashy Xmas present imo. Putting up some decs was a good thing to do. You wouldn't want to force your views about Xmas onto others, like the trashy Xmas tries to force it's views onto you.

Not a bad post Mantis. Yes the thought of doing something for my family for a change gives me a nice feeling inside and i'm not really an emotional wreck around this time of year
.
In fact I'm mostly quite jovial, especially when I get asked that monotonous question "You ready for Christmas yet?" I just reply that I don't celebrate Christmas and watch there little confused faces look uncomfortable whilst searching for an appropriate retort

lol, fair point..though I obviously never ordered a Latte. Coffee with milk is for girls, commoners and peasants. (Americans obv fall into the commoners category) Tea is the drink of choice for a man. And never from a dodgy 'merkin outlet like starbucks as what they sell can not possibly qualify as Tea.

Same here, my mates bought me seasons 1-5 on boxset three years ago and its took me that long for her to be able to watch it in the same room as me. The frustrating thing is that the entire way through she is smiling, laughing and going 'oh noooo, whats he going to do now?' - yet whenever I get the DVD out ready to watch she still says 'dont put that on, i hate it, its cringy'
