Title: St Asaph? Post by: The Camel on November 28, 2012, 01:01:37 AM A city in the UK I've never heard of, with 3,000 odd population?
Wtf? Very strange. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Asaph Title: Re: St Asaph? Post by: The Camel on November 28, 2012, 01:03:34 AM There's another one!
St Davids. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_David%27s Title: Re: St Asaph? Post by: kinboshi on November 28, 2012, 01:04:52 AM Yes, became a city last year or the year before. Was a question on university challenge a few weeks back and none of the teams got it and I felt smug (for about 20 seconds until the next question about English Literature).
Dafydd (jizzem on here) lives there and runs a pub there. It's under a lot of water at the moment I believe. Title: Re: St Asaph? Ely, Ripon, Truro and Wells are all cities in England with < 20,000 populatoin. But I've heard of all of those! Title: Re: St Asaph? Post by: kinboshi on November 28, 2012, 01:09:18 AM It only got city status very recently, and lots of towns applied for the status and only a few were selected. Northampton obviously passed over again.
Title: Re: St Asaph? Post by: kinboshi on November 28, 2012, 01:09:36 AM Didn't realise Ripon was a city!

I only know because it's local, it's possess the most beautiful racetrack I've ever visited and said racecourse holds a race called "The City of Ripon stakes" :) Title: Re: St Asaph? Yeah, they thought they'd found one - but they looked at her prices and decided she was a comedienne! Title: Re: St Asaph? Title: Re: St Asaph? Post by: Robert HM on November 28, 2012, 01:20:33 AM I thought St Asaph was a City based on the Cathedral. Didn't realise it was a recent grant. I guess that there are a few that lost out in the 19th century breaking of the links between catherdral and status that have been compensated like this, later.
Title: Re: St Asaph? Post by: kinboshi on November 28, 2012, 01:21:23 AM Oh, it was only this year - thought it was last year:

It only took a debate about the smallest city in Britain to winkle Robert out from his rabbithole. WB sir. Title: Re: St Asaph? Title: Re: St Asaph? Title: Re: St Asaph? Post by: jizzemm on November 28, 2012, 10:41:10 PM Trying to post pictures but struggling..
A very surreal day to be honest, I was fortunate enough to not have a problem with the my home, it did not get to me, but the pub was flooded when I got a call for 7am.. Goit down there saved what was possible and then watched the levels rise at a rate I thought not possible.. If someone drops me a message on how to get pics that are too large on Ill see what I can do.. We have been lucky as a business and have managed to get a load of local builders/suppliers down with their cleaning tools and tarmac etc for the carpark and inside has been cleared of water by last night with electricity returned this afternoon and heating / fires all on in the hope of us getting the all clear by the health to open for friday.. Link to our facebook for anyone interested in pics etc.. facebook.com/ploughsa Title: Re: St Asaph?
