A Gypsy Wagon?

Did the current Duke invite you?

Yes, a Gypsy wagon. Isn't that great?

We were guests of the head groundsman, he's been there for almost 40 years. He took us for a tour of the house first. We've been many times but because he knows the place and it's history so well he always finds something new to show us. This time learned about William John Robert Cavendish, who was killed in action in September 1944 by a sniper in Belgium while serving during World War II as a major in the Coldstream Guards. His company was trying to capture the town of Heppen, which was being held by troops of the German SS.

Billy as he was known, was Heir apparent, but that sniper's bullet changed history in a big way.

This photograph was taken just 4 months earlier, with his new bride Kathleen 'Kick' Cavendish, nee Kennedy.

Kennedy....from the American Kennedy clan? They knew how to marry well.

Fascinating stuff Tom.

Always wanted a proper mooch in the Chatsworth Library.

More staff than ever before these days Rich. Big overheads but big income thanks to a huge number of visitors.

The visitors were the salvation on Chatsworth though. Unfortunately Edward Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire, died, in strange circumstances on the 26 of November 1950, just a few months too early to avoid 80% death duties.

It's an interesting story, you can read about it here.

Yes, those Kennedy's. Her brother was none other than John F.

Her story is a great, but tragically short one too. She was killed in a plane crash when she was only 28.

It seems the rich and famous are no more immune to heartache and sorrow than you or I.

Full story here.

This is a decent Chatsworth documentary once you get past the first couple of minutes.

What a story that Dr Bodkin Adams is!

Between 1946 and 1956, more than 160 of his patients died in suspicious circumstances. Of these, 132 left him money or items in their wills.

Has there ever been a more accessible educational (in it's widest sense) tool than Wiki? You can open one page, say 10th Duke of Devonshire, & end up going through dozens more, chasing the story.

And all free to view. We are blessed to have such access.

I've just found out that true to life painting is actually a thing. it's called photo-realism.

Isn't it incredible?

I don't do fiction. I don't do repeats, I don't do cheesy American sit coms, so how come, even after seeing each one at least a dozen times over the last 20 years, I still find myself watching and laughing out loud at an episode of Friends most days?

Because it's really well crafted stuff and very funny?

Who's your favourite?

Tough question, they all work so well as a unit.

If I was pushed I would put them in this order.

I'm a Joey fan, and more so since he was in the marvellous 'Episodes' on BBC2, but it feels like choosing your favourite child in a way.

The ensemble just works, the scripts were so tight and the timing nigh on perfect.
