Title: ipod in your car
Post by: cdw1111 on August 26, 2008, 12:23:58 AM
I recently joined the 21st century and bought an ipod and after a massive struggle i now have some music on it.My bmw has a superb in built stereo system in it but unfortunately has no point to plug the ipod into it(it's getting on).Has anyone ever used one of those FM transmitter gadgets that you can get on ebay?I had a look on the AVforum site, which is great by btw,but there really geeky and pretty much dismiss them.
Has anyone in the real world used one, tell me all knowing forum.
     cheers col.

There's a handy gadget which looks just like a cassette which costs about £15 and it plugs into your ipod-bingo.

It's this one from halfords (http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_243867_langId_-1_categoryId_107167), just set the frequency on the device, tune your radio to the same, plug the iPod into the transmitter and away you go.

they are the nuts and couldn't be much simpler to use. virtually no loss of sound quality in the transmission

The one from Argos is fanrillo, it charges your ipod as it goes.

they are not perfect to be honest, you have to avoid conflict with local stations if on a drive. plug in tape or mp3 direct input much better but for £7/10 they are alright for a temp fix. don't buy massively overpriced belkin type stuff, just the same as chinese unbranded kit.

The ipod transmitter things aren't very good in my experience. You have to keep fiddling with them on a long drive if a radio station interferes and such.

You can get a car stereo with ipod input for like £60-70 these days. Much better option. Although sadly I just bought an ipod touch and it's not compatible with my ipod stereo :(

they are fine, set the frequency to one which is not surrounded by lots of others obv.   I have used it going from Portsmouth to Notts several times and Portsmouth to Colchester dozens of times ... never had any interference,

I used to have one of the transmitter ones and never had a problem with it. Once you've found a free wavelength to tune it in to you're away.

If you do any long journeys then make sure you get one that charges your iPod as you go. If you don't they drain your battery faster than normal because obviously they're transmitting which requires power.

A friend of mine had a cassette one and said it was brilliant. My transmitter one was good enough that I didn't swap. Down to personal preference really.

Also needing a car stereo old enough to have a cassette drive!

Keeping on the road though, that's a different matter.

We bought one from ebay - the other half has used it on long drives and never really had a problem, very occassionally some interference but nothing to speak of.

FM Transmitters aren't always the best...a bit of interference.  I'd recommend something like this:

"Drive + Play 2
Drive + Play™ 2 Mobile Media Manager

The Harman Kardon® Drive + Play™ 2 is the premier product for in-car connectivity of portable music players and digital devices, including the Apple iPod, USB flash memory drives and many other music players. It comes equipped with a sleek dash-mounted 3.5" color display and a wireless control knob to give you the most sophisticated and elegant music experience on the road today. There are optional accessories available (for example, for Bluetooth® phone access). Other features: a digital audio/expansion hub; intelligent iPod and portable-device charging circuit; built-in FM transmitter; and built-in direct-audio output. Change the appearance of the display with built-in themes or download additional themes from the Web. Shortcuts let you quickly transition to an artist or album without browsing through menus. Automatic Music Mix makes "channels" of music that may be grouped according to your taste and habits."

Why would you buy an iPod touch when you can buy an iPhone?

Agree the FM transmitters aren't that good, get a proper input.

Erm......

In case you have an extra unit maybe? It's just got 2 aux inputs that's all. Big waste of time really. There's 2 cigarette lighter charger thingys as well. Strange.

It's a shame they're behind the centre arm rest rather than in it like your 3 series. Much better where your's are so you can leave your iPod in there all the time.
