Title: PokerStars Dublin EPT: Final Day - Interactive
Post by: NoflopsHomer on October 29, 2006, 01:46:36 PM
 :hello:

Snoopy and I turned up again early so we could interview Chris Moneymaker but he errrr... didn't show again. So instead, I'll tell you a true story. Snoopy and I went to the Tescos across the road to stock up with supplies for today and we're waiting at the checkout when Snoopy turns to me and says something along the lines of, "Do you reckon that you could tell that all the men in here are Irish if you didn't know?"
"Errr...no," I said.
"Well...I reckon I could, because they all seem to have an air of the Ohbejesus about them."

Hi all,

I always remember a debate I had with Fushy about whether or not you could tell the nationality of a dog by its bark. I still stand by my statement that dogs can have accents!

anyone on the Internet can see your email Turk, but you can hide it by going to your profile and clicking 'Account and Related Settings' on the left hand side. This should give you a box to tick which will hide it for you.

It says this:

Hide email address from public?

with a small tickable box on the left.

Sat in the 1/2 game at the Regency and stacked someone with  7s 2h. He was not happy. Moneymaker was still in the 5/10 game when i left at 7am, maybe why he never showed for interview.

We were joined in the pressroom by a cool, calm and collected Roland de Wolfe, who appears to be taking the small case of half a mil in his stride, as I'm sure we all would.

I think he's only concerned, if you can say that, with William Thorson. "If I can get rid of William in the first hand, I should win," he suggested confidently.

To be honest, I think he might be right...

Chris Moneymaker did show up for the Interview in the end and he was thankfully very talkative. He looked very tired, so I don't think he went to bed after supper, but he still provided some fascinating answers. One thing that was clearly obvious is that whatever criticism comes his way, he is very strong willed and remains confident in his game and ability as a player.

Three players see a 5s 9d 3d flop, David Tavenier bets outs 30k, William raises another 100k and Roland passes. David re-raises all-in and William quickly mucks.

Roland raises to 30k from the button. Tavernier calls instantly from the small blind and Rob Yong folds.

Roland takes the pot with a 45k bet on the Qc Tc Qd Flop.

Flop = 3d 6s Qh

Roland bets 60k, William calls.

Turn = Jc

Both check

River = 4c

Both check again and William wins with bottom pair.

MASSIVE!

4-way raised pot, 150k in the pot between Roland, David Tavenier, Rob and William. The board comes Qd 5c 3s, it's checked round to David in the cut-off who bets 95k and the other three fold. David shows a Queen.

Ever heard the gag about the guy who bet that he could make a donkey laugh one minute and then cry the next?

Well, he succeeded and won his bet, and when his mates asked how he did it, he replied that the first encounter he told him he was better endowed and then the second time he proved it.  :D

Okay, no more willy talk now. Apologies to everyone, back to the poker.  ;tk;

I believe a few people were after a bit more info about Blackpoolian, Nick Slade, so how about this:

Nick Slade, 43, an acquisitions broker from Preston, has only been playing poker for ten months but is already enjoying enormous success, making four final tables in four different countries in the last three months - he came 3rd in the Bellagio Cup II in July for a $41,000 payout.

 A former semi-pro golfer, he had to give up because of family commitments but believes the concentration skills he learned on the fairway are helping in him four-day poker tourneys.

More importantly, he is the only inverted chair sitter on today's final, although I understand Roland is also partial to the odd chair invertion.

think he chopped for 50 at the bellagio together with winning the 1k daily a time or 2 (and an incredible run on the roulette as well)

Rob appears to be getting a little frustrated, especially after his last 56k raise was re-raised all-in by Thorsson, thereby forcing Yongsta to fold. I hope he keeps his cool. The blinds are relatively small and Rob still has a playable stack.

"I think that's the last time I can pass," commented Rob.

George takes down a pot, Rolf just told me a stort about George coming to the Amersterdam Masters and having a long in-depth discussion with him, the TD and a few of the other players in a break of the final table, and when Rolf walked passed George a little later and said hello, George didn't have a clue who he was and couldn't remember him at all :D

Patrick Bueno pushes all-in for 69k and William calls.

Kh 6h for Patrick, Ahrt Jd for William.

Board:

7d 9c Qc 5h Jc

which means Patrick Bueno is our 8th place finisher winning €51,740

I've had a hard time of it recently. Last night I accidentally went to sleep in my clothes, including my only trousers which are now very sweaty, and then this morning, I realised that I hadn't brought as many boxers as I thought and am being forced to wear my emergency pair. I guess they do the job, but the material tends to settle in uncomfortable places.

I guess they do the job, but the material tends to settle in uncomfortable places.
emergency pair is that code for same pair turned inside out :D

Rob Yong grabs some of those chips back after re-raising Roland all-in.

Clearly folding, Roland asks, "How much exactly please"

To which Rob responds, "Shut up"

Roland briskly fold.

"I just wanted to say all-in," adds Rob.

Don't get this kind of banter on too many EPT tables.  :D

It seems ROB is feeling the burdon of all the support he has.Everyone so wants him to do well, it's painful to watch.
I hope he doesn't crack and blow away his chips.
After all it's not the money that counts,in his case.
But the prestige would be invaluable.

True, very good point.

However, I would suggest that with all the dosh he's pumping into DTD, 500 spondoolies would be pretty handy, even for someone as affluent as Rob.

More importantly, he is the only inverted chair sitter on today's final, although I understand Roland is also partial to the odd chair invertion.

wrong! i played him last year !

Nick's words, not mine Turk.

Are u sure it was him? Are you mixing him up with me? I played you last year too.  8)

funny u   lol

It's not that they're too small, it's just that they don't quite fit the shape of my body. I'm very unique in that sense. 5.11 but with the waist of a small child.

Just previous to this crazy hand...

Roland raises preflop, David, who has been steadily accumulating chips calls,

They check the Ahrt Jd Ac 7s 5c to the river where David bet 40k on the river and Roland called with his Tens saying, "You got a Jack?"

David shows Ad Jc.

Rob, William and Nick limp, Roland raises, Rob and William passed, Nick Slade re-raises all-in and Roland calls.

Roland:

Ad Qc

Nick:

Js 9c

Board:

Aspades 9s Qd 4h 3c

Nick was adamant Roland had nothing and was pulling a move and thought he could make Roland pass for another 220k, incidentally Rob had been contemplating making a move with a pair of Fours and would've setted up on the turn.

So...

Nick Slade is our 7th place finisher winning €70,210

Roland raises pre-flop from the cut-off and David Tavernier calls from the button.

Flop = 7h Jd Qd

Roland checks, David bets 30k and Roland calls.

Both check the 7d Turn

River = Kh

Roland bets out 90k and David passes.

I think he said he released a small pocket pair.

A few words on one of the quieter players on this final table, Gavin Simms...

Londoner Gavin, 36, learned his poker skills at the PokerStars’s fun Century Club monthly tournaments and, according to tournament director Conrad Brunner, he is by far the most successful graduate of the event. His biggest win to date was $44,000 after coming 59th in the $25,000 WPT Classic in April – a spectacular feat from the London stockbroker who outlasted some of the best players in the world. He said: “I’m either suicidally reckless or overcautious but this week I’ve not managed to self-destruct”. He may be a dark horse for this event; Noah Boeken says “No one ever knows what he has.”

Another scoop for Roland...

Flop = 2s Aspades 3c

Roland bets 70k, William Thorsson calls.

Turn = Qc

Thorsson checks, Roland bets  140k, Thorsson calls.

River = 8s

Thorsson checks and Roland asks his opponent how many chips he had.

"670k," replies Thorsson confidentally.

Roland bets 350k, his glare focuses on Thorsson, eyes shuddering from side to side.

Thorrson folds.

Georgre McKeever sure has aligator blood (is that the term from Rounders?), just can't seem to get rid of him.

In fact, I'm not even sure I've seen George reveal a hand, which sure is a huge weapon when he moves all-in as everyone runs for the hills. After all, you can't get knocked out if no one calls you.

Take a butchers at this:

Friends say Irishman George McKeever looks like Father Christmas - and plays like Scrooge. That may be a bit harsh judging by his results over the years. His highlight was a superb 7th in the World Series of Poker main event in 1999 for $125,775, but it was no fluke as he has a long list of tournament successes behind him. The 72-year-old cashed last month in the London EPT, where he also final tabled in 2004, and is currently 6th in the All Ireland All Time Money List, with $674,334. He has a fearsome reputation in cash games too.

So, as tikay is the Doyle Brunson of England, I guess George could be seen as the Doyle Brunson of Ireland.

Speak of the devil, he's just doubled up, unfortunately so for Yongsta fans as it was the Dusk Till Dawn man who lost the coinflip when his Pocket Ladies failed to stand up to the Big Slick of George. King on the flop.

This guy is a fearsome opponent.

William Thorson, 23, from Gothenburg, started playing at home with his parents. His father Olof, a horse-trainer, is also a highly successful player and has cashed at the WSOP. William is already a well-known and formidable player and one of the most successful online players in the world, playing the highest no limit games available. He came 13th in this year’s World Series of Poker for a $907,128 payout. His main concern today is Roland who he describes as “sickly aggressive”.

Something tells me that William isn't a man who worries too much about his opponents.

Hope he doesnt think he can rattle roland by calling him a fish- hes been called that for years lol

also I wonder how long it will be before he asks how many wpts hes won? Wish I was there to see the banter flying around, makes a change from the usual robot ept finals

Unfortunately William hasn't beening running too bad himself, winning almost a million in this year's WSOP Main Event.

Now, if he sent the same line my way, I might struggle with my comeback. Don't think the £5 rebuy at Walsall is quite the same.

William limps, George and Roland also limp, David makes it 100k, William re-raises to 300k with a veritable castle of 1k chips, George and Roland get out of the way. David dwells for a bit, Roland tells him to throw his little balls which is he uses as a card protectors into William's castle, which gets a lot of laughs in the press room. David passes.

Rob -- 450k
William -- 550k
George -- 450k
Gavin -- 500k
Roland 1.2mil
David -- 650k

Rob passes...

Re : William

Its also very well known amongst Swedish and other Scandi  players that prior  to his wsop cash, he was completely skint and deep in debt due to the heinous combination of lifestyle , poker form/ability and  apparently narcotics, there was even a very funny flash comic about him. Do not assume his presence implies legendary ability, Rober Varkonyi did win the WSOP if you remember

JOHN MAGILL :hello:

Thanks John. A delight to meet you too, top man!  :)up

From what I've witnessed, his mere table image is admirable if anything else. He looks fearsome at the felt and his confidence seems to strike fear in his opponents. I mean this is a non-hostile way, but there appears to be a slight arrogance is his manner at the table, but in terms of winning poker, I think I serve him well.

I still laugh when I think back to his hand with Andy Black when the Irishman made a somewhat dodgy move with Nines, only then to four flush Thorsson's Kings.

Thorsson's reply? A rather sarcastic, "Nice hand, sir." He really doesn't care who he's up against, if he thinks you've played like a fish, he'll tell you.

I believe these are known as spondoolies.

Reyaaz Mulla and my good self were debating whether or not it was real money or monopoly money. Then Ash Hussain chipped in with, "If it was real money, somebody would have had it by now".

Maybe, but then again, perhaps management thought that everyone's going to think that, so let's double bluff them by putting out real dosh.

Probably not though.

I may well be a lone voice, but hasn't Roland won enough in the last 18 months already?

And William is clearly gonna win loads in the future.

So I'm cheering for one of the old timers. George and David were already well established as great players when I started playing all those years ago.

Both are complete gentlemen on and off the table and I would be chuffed if one of them won.

Simms (sb), de Wolfe (bb) and Thorsson (button) see a three way flop of Ahrt 7d 7s

I distinctly noticed Simms shrugging his shoulders as he checked, perhaps acting like he'd completely missed. He seems very keen on the amateur dramatics, I remember him betting out a flopped two pair and then huffing when Thorsson called.

Anyhow, Roland checked and then Thorsson bet out.

Not surprisingly to me, Simms gave it a dwell before smooth calling.

With Roland folding behind, Simms checked the Kh Turn, and so did Thorsson, a very suspicious look on his face as he carefully studied his opponent.

Again, not surprisingly, Simms bet out 110k on the Jd River.

Thorsson, who I reckon had an Ace (maybe a pocket pair of some kind), thought and throught, counted out the 110k, and then eventually folded.

The question on my mind is was Simms intentionally overacting, hoping that his opponents would notice and suspect trips, thereby allowing him to represent and take away the pot with nothing, or was he just doing some straight out bad acting (as he did earlier with the A-7) with the Seven?

I'm still not sure, although I would suggest the former. He knows Thorsson is observant, so I think he was double bluffing his opponent with his clearly intentional mannerisms.

I hope to catch up with him later on to find out. Whether he'll tell me the truth or not is another matter...

I disagree with Snoopy I was adamant Sims had a 7 there, what else can he check/call with on an A-7-7 board? He's the tightest player left who seems to play good solid poker.

Gavin Simms is OUT and becomes the 4th place finisher winning €138,580

He made a move with J-7 suited by was caught by Roland who decided to play back at him with Pocket Sixes.

6 on the Flop and Roland appears invincible.

Is it true that the more confident players win more coinflips?

NO DEAL

I'm not sure how they can strike a deal here. With the chip lead, Roland won't want to take much less than 1st prize whilst the other two know how easy it is to get back into the game and won't be interested in taking home lowly sums.

Something like 450k for Roland is the only sort of figure I can see them accepting.

If Roland doubles up either of his opponents, he'll be even in chips. Just one coinflip away, it can change so easily in poker as we know, so I'd say that if Roland can get something in the Four hundreds then he's doing well.

Having said that, I'm just a simpleton...

PokerStars qualifier David 'Davethebest' Tavernier nearly didn't even make it to Dublin. He missed his first flight by 5 minutes and his second flight was cancelled. He finally sat down at the Regency 90 minutes late. However, the late start doesn’t seem to have harmed his play and the same thing happened to Patrick Antonius who won in Baden last year. Anaesthetist David, 50, has been playing poker for over 30 years - online, in home games and the occasional tournament. Married with four children, he lives in Paris and is a regular on PokerStars.

Flop = 7d-6s-Ad, Turn = As, River = 9d, checked to River where Roland bet and David called. Roland mucked straight away, David took the pot with a 9.

Londoner Roland de Wolfe, 27, had enjoyed several modest cashes before bursting on to the big poker stage by winning the WPT Paris last year, collecting $599,600. More success followed and in April this year he came 3rd in the WPT Five-Star World Poker Classic in Las Vegas for another bumper payout of $1,025,205. Roland, a fanatical Arsenal fan, is also no stranger to the EPT, finishing 20th in Barcelona last month. Before turning pro, he used to work for gambling magazine Inside Edge.

Hi, this is Gavin Simms here. Snoopy says I should say hello (after we shared a few PM's). Not quite sure what a Blondeite is (guessing it's something to do with Dave Colclough, who was on my right for a bit on day 1b...??)

The A77 flop was unfortunate, because William had didn't hit any of it (he had KQ or KJ). I had A7c ... so dream flop...

I couldn't raise because I hoped Roland would have a hand and would raise behind me ...

Once he folded and William checked gthe turn that was it I thought. No more money to be had.

Was a lot of fun, but definitely much more luck than skill in tourneys than cash, which is probably how a fish like me gets to do well once in a while.

David had Qh Jc for a bluff but Roland held 5s 4c for trip fives meaning that...

David Tavernier is our 2nd place finisher officially winning €314,120 which means...

Congratulations to Roland who picked up chips all the way through the tournament and rarely looked in trouble. Also well played to David who played a very good final table moving up the places quietly, indeed, Roland said to him he would have had to pass an Ace on the river to his bluff. Well done also to Gavin, Nick and Rob, the other blondes on the table and the rest of the finalists. Snoopy is just about to upload a few pictures.

Abosulutely cream-crackered so apologies for keeping this short.

Cracking city, cracking tournament, cracking result.

Nick, Rob, Gavin and Roland - true stars, did blonde proud and full deserved the spondoolies for their excellent performances.

Many thx to the staff at the Regency who worked like trojans and Mad her PokerStars who made updating so much easier, not to mention highly enjoyable!

As, Delboy would say, bonjour all!

What a dude.  Typical that I'm not there on that one.  Enjoy it Snoops and Homer, you've done a great job.

Roland, WPT, EPT, are there any other PTs out there for you?  Congratulations!
