Title: SCUM SCUM SCUM!!
Post by: mjrevie on May 15, 2006, 04:11:39 PM
Some scum just cleaned out my bank account out to the tune of a grand!!!!!

Total Scum. Add to this the only time I have used it in the last week was at Tie rack and the Odeon, it just shows you that banks know nothing when it comes to tackling fraud and these new chips and pins are about as good as a kick in the gonads.

Sorry for the rant!!!!

SCUM!!

know how you feel mate - happened to me a while back. I posted on the thread below (about half way down page 11) to try and warn people to contact their bank to arrange extra security.

Cheers Matt. Seems your a bit more vigilant than most. It was actually the bank that contacted me cause they said there had been weird activity. I would say totally emptying the account qualifies as weird behaviour. 5 weeks is a pain in the ass of a long time to wait, especially when your a soap dodging student who needs to be down the pub on a Tuesday night!!!

living in the jungle you need to be extra extra vigilant - its a dog eat dog world out there, gotta make sure monkey doesnt get involved in eating equation!!

My bank did offer me a temporary interest free overdraft to cover the money that went missing from my account whilst they conducted their fraud enquiry. After the 5 weeks when i got my money they withdrew the facility at no cost to myself. If you talk to your bank and they are certain that you are not at fault they will probably do the same for you (even if you are a soap dodging student ;))

p.s. what is a soap dodging student doing shopping at Tie-Rack??

I really should check my bank account on a daily basis, but seeing my overdraft going up and up and up and nearly hitting it's limit is enough to send me over the edge.

Saying that I just checked it and found out that some cheeky sod has taken payment for something twice!!

Sometimes I wish I didn't have a bank account and that I stored my money under my mattress, at least then I'd have control over it.

The more I hear about these identity thefts and bank accounts being robbed the more I panic - I really don't know what I would do if this happened to me.

The soap dodging student had to buy his soap dodging supervisor (hey if you think students are bad, you should see the degenrates that teach us!!!) a tarten bow tie as a thank you for all the times he didnt have time to speak to me about my research project and criticised everything i did!!! Now the cycle will continue as I have been given a student to supervise during the summer, and I cant wait to make his/her life hell (unless she's hot or he likes poker/football). Is this what they mean by the circle of life?

I hardly ever use my debit card.  Hard to avoid when booking flights, hotels, etc online.  But in stores I will always try to use cash.

Hope you get your money back

I'm the same Trace - ignorance is bliss as far as I'm concerned most of time. I normally find out I'm out of cash when the machine is rude to me!

what i want to know is how they got away with using your account. surely you need you security numbers from the back of the card? is it the companies you bought something rom that have stolen the details? im interested to know about this.

cheers

There are several ways mad, if someone double swipes your card (copies the info from the chip) they can then with use of a dodgy shop assistant then use it there.
Not all places ask for the CVV number either and some places still use the old machines that copy the details onto paper (a slider thingy).

There's been a spate of these frauds in recent weeks, they just busted a skmming fraud at our local petrol station and there was a similar one near where I work in aldershot... get 40 quids worth of petrol and next day someone withdraws £1k from an ATM in mumbai!  :(

I dont know yet fully what happened but they got the money out of an ATM machine which means they must have made a copy of my card because my card hasnt left my sight in weeks. Pal who works for RBS thinks they will have skimmed my card a few weeks ago and it was sort of coincidence it happened last night. God knows how they got though and god knows how they got my pin number either.

What they have done is put a skimming device in the chip and pin terminal and taken all of your details (pin included) and then made up a blank plastic card with all your details on. Hopefully you are covered with your bank's insurance.

Same sort of thing happened to me a few years ago when I was married. My card was swallowed by a cash machine. Didnt think nothing of it until I was rudely awoken one morning by the ex wife, throwing a bank statement at me and asking who I was setting up house with! The scumbags had fixed the machine so that it looked like the machine had kept the cards. They then went on a 48 hour spending spree buying £3000 worth of electrical goods.

Took two weeks for the bank to return the money to my account, and I had two weeks of the ex wife constantly accusing me of setting up another home somewhere else!
