Title: Online Poker Playing Environment
Post by: HarlemShuffle on May 16, 2006, 01:17:43 PM
I’m trying to improve my online playing environment the best I can.

What setup do you find best for playing online? Do you like to be sitting at your computer desk, locked away in a room with no distractions? Lying on your sofa with the TV on? Do you have a dedicated spot or do you move around the house with your laptop? Do you use laptop monitor, dual monitor, TV, etc. etc?

Do you have any tips to think about to make things better or tips on things to avoid?

Post pictures of your setup if you like.

Cheers,

HS

Horses for courses, what works for one person may not for another. Some play better one table at a time, some play better with 5 or 6.

The best thing to do is experiment yourself and find with what you are most comfortable with.

I play in my living room whilst sat on the sofa. I have a monitor hooked upto my laptop both on the coffee table infront of me, i have a wireless mouse so i can sit back whilst i try and play 2 or 3 MTT's at a time. If i'm playing 1 i tend to find that i'm more easily distracted to surfing on the internet on the laptop whilst i play the table on the monitor. I will always have the tv on or my itunes playing just for some background noise even though i wont be watching or listening properly.

I'm now using a tablet PC - I can't multitable easily on it - but find multitabling doesn't suit me. I much prefer using the stylus direct on the screen, but my prediction was uncannilly accurate - showing off with wireless connection &  a significant losing session was had in the pub......

I never thought of using a wireless mouse. That's a good idea. Should be able to plug my laptop into the TV and control it using wireless mouse from the sofa. I'll give that a go.

I never thought of using a tablet either. I do like to multi-table so it probably wouldn't work for me. Thanks for the info.

Any other tips or tricks, good or bad?

I sit in my reclining chair with a 17 inch WUXGA notebook and the TV on in the background.

Make sure both cats have been fed and watered before sitting down to play a tournament!!

It all depends on what you play, with me its MTT's so i have to be prepared to be infront of the screen for 5 or so hours. Make sure you have everything within reach to avoid having to leave watching the screen once the tournaments have begun incase you miss any vital information which may help later. Always take notes if anything happens so you have information on your opponents should you ever meet them again in cyberspace.

Though like i said in my first post, what works for one may not work for others - you need to experiment and find out what environment makes you the most profit.

For me it depends on what i'm playing.

If i'm playing in a big multi i'll try to watch a film during the early stages.

if i'm playing several stts or cash games i turn everything of and try to concertrate as attentitivly as possible.

If i'm playing in the big cash game then i'm usually divided between telling the niegbours that are complaining about the music to go away and going to the kitchen for a refill ;)

Time For Post number 2 I think.

This was my poker environment in the summer...Kfc/mcdonalds/burger king on one side of keyboard. Assorted sweets and bottle of coke on other side of keyboard. Do NOT do this i put on about 2 stone in 2 months.

I find that Itunes on background a few websites to surf and only 2 tables at one time max (you dont want to super tilt with 5 tables open :|) and i'm a happy poker player. I think as long as whatever you do is putting you in pleasant mood, its the right environment. Grumpy poker players become impatient and losing poker players.
