I've been in the gambling business all my working life and have seen, and felt, the damage that a gambling addiction can do, it is not pretty. Although addictions are very powerful, they can be beaten. Your piece is full of good advice to get the compulsive gambler on the road to recovery. On a related issue (compulsive gambling), I recently saw the film "In America", which contains a truly amazing scene about gambling and its effects on a family. It's just one scene in the movie, but I found it really hard to watch... I was curled up in a ball on my sofa watching through my fingers, if you see what I mean - just desperately hoping it would all work out. For those people that don't know the film I mean, it stars Samantha Morton, and is about a young family who move from Ireland to New York in the early eighties to start a new life. The set up for the scene in question is so simple: the family is having a day out at the fair, and the father is trying to win an E.T. doll for his daughter. Somehow the simplicity adds to the power of it, and the acting from all involved is just spot on. Highly recommended. I used to be totally hooked on slot machines in my younger days, it was a total nightmare. It started when i was 13/14 and got a job working in a small hotel waitressing/washing up etc. I started off just working at weekends for a few hours for pocket money. Over time I worked more and more hours till I was literally living there over the weekend. The problem was that my mother had no idea I was working so many hours so I had to get "rid" of the evidence. So after the bar was shut I would sit there and feed all my wages into the slot machine. This led to an obsession to earn more money to feed my habit. That went on for years and even though I knew I could never beat the machine I still couldnt stop. The day I found out I was pregnant with my oldest boy I stopped....just like that. Poker is my addiction now but we all know thats not gambling ;goodvevil; Title: Re: It's Nice To Be In Control Post by: londonpokergirl on May 19, 2006, 07:09:50 PM Excellent article.
I think most people know when they have an addiction, but its the facing up to facts when it becomes a problem that is when the problems can start. Thankfully I'm a sit on the bench person. I love poker and hate poker so at any point could give it up. But at the mement I enjoy it, so why give up doing something thats enjoyable and profitable. I'm quite lucky I don't have an addictive personality, but i'm sure theres 1000's out there that have. If you need a shoulder or a willing ear to listen let me know.... I've known for many years, that I have an addictive personality. When I was younger, it showed in my foolish Drug & Drink problems, consequently relationships suffered, I was on a downward spiral, but help from some close friends helped me turn it around. As Tighty says Help is the Key to any sort of addiction. Title: Re: It's Nice To Be In Control Post by: bhoywonder on May 20, 2006, 02:00:55 AM great piece
