Title: Now it's Poker Card Room Spam by Text!
Post by: tikay on May 19, 2006, 04:17:59 PM
I just got this on my Moby.....

"Dear tikay, text POKER to (xxxxx) for your FREE Party Poker Mobile Game and start playing on the move. To stop msgs txt NO to (xxxxx)......."

I never gave Party Poker my Moby number, how they get that? They pay someone to pass on Moby numbers?

And presumably, I have to pay for the Text to them asking them not to text me?

yes you'd have to pay for receiving the text. even sending them a text to say STOP will trigger umpteen more texts to say they've received it, ou've been removed and numerous other promotional texts from other companies. the best way of stopping this is to get in touch with your network provider and asking them to block your number from these promotional texts and to also phone the company in question (using a landline phone) and asking them to remove you from their database.

they get the numbers from a variety of sources and these sources then sell on your personal info to other companies

But it said "Dear tikay", it's tough to make a connection between the name "tikay" & the name my 'phone is registered in - "A J Kendall". So they never got it from my service provider.

no they wouldnt get it from your service provider....no service provider would ever sell your info on. chances are you entered your mobile phone details to a site when you registered with that name and they have sold it on or is sending you the text messages

The writing IS a bit small for me, I'll admit. Maybe it was a misread.

I just got the exact same text from party. I haven't played there for years, which makes it all the more strange. Its a disgrace if i've been charged

I got spammed earlier on my laptop.  I sent the details to Ironside because when I opened it, I got a virus. I had to delete my hotmail link and reconnect it because it kept freezing after I had opened the email. I ran my virus checker and it came up with an add-on that kept popping up on the screen.

I don't like spammers, but I also felt abit bad burning the person. They are just doing a job at the end of the day. If it hadn't given me a virus then I would have just deleted it and thought nothing more of it. But I didn't want any Blondes getting the same virus I had.  It is better to share rather than risk others having the same problems later.

He should have thought of that before he covertly spammed you Sark. I apologise for what happened. It's not like it was a mistake! I expect better from blonde Members. Much better.

I am just trying to decide how to handle this Ian, it's tricky, but suffice to say, I'm furious about it.

Really guys. I feel the member in question was trying to help me. The way it was attempted wasn't the best. I wasn't really sure he was a Blonde member because it came to my own email address rather than my Blonde PM. That's generally how I know if a Blonde member is contacting me or its from another person. Because it came to my email, I assumed it was a spammer.  I wasn't too sure of the name of the person concerned.

To be honest it was purely the fact that I got a virus that annoyed me. I emailed Ironside to ask if everyone coming onto the forum can see our email address if they are not hidden. I always thought it was only Blondes that could see them.  I have now hidden my address.

I do feel bad about this. If i had known this was a Blonde member, I would have treated this differently. I would have deleted it and not thought anymore of it. I am not in the habit of burning people and telling tales.  It is unfortunate how it has turned out.  I am positive the person in question didn't deliberately send me a virus. It was accidental.  He was trying to help me I feel. But my loyalties obviously rest with the Blonde forum and Blonde site.

Because the link that was sent was in BLUE , I clicked it. Had it been Red, Yellow or Orange, then I probably wouldn't have clicked it at all.

You have done nothing wrong Sark. The virus is one thing, the "behind our backs", covert spam from a blonde Member is another. And, it appears, you are not the only one.

Watch this space.

watching patiently.....

I get quite a few emails from blondes about poker etc, and I feel as though if someone is spamming/sending viral content, we have a strong right to know, but naturally your judgement is trusted

It's a serious matter, & it's best not to act in haste in these things. I will put up a Post about it later today though, for sure.
