Title: Do you know your blood type? Post by: Sark79 on May 21, 2006, 02:30:06 AM The other day, a man stopped me with a clipboard. Normally I have several excuses ready to make my escape. They usually go along the lines of " sorry, I have to catch a plane, bus, taxi, train, meet someone for lunch, have an appointment at the bank, optician, dentist, Psychiatrist, I have left my tap running I have to get home, I have to fix the front door". My most recent excuse was " I have to fill a vase with water". This one confused me more than the person I said it to.
Anyway, about a month ago, I was on the other side of the clipboard and had to interview people in Glasgow City centre. To be honest they probably knew more about the subject than I did because I hadn't been to a class all year. For the first time I realised how hard it is for people doing this all the time. Out of every 20 people, only one actually acknowledged my existence. The rest just walked past and fed me a stupid line such as " I am too busy... I need to go and meet my secretary...I am having an affair". This one made me smile and was added to my own list for future reference should I need it. Ok, back to the guy with the clipboard. He was doing research about general knowledge for a college project. For the first time in ages, I actually willingly stopped for him There were forty questions. Some of them were things like - What is the capital city of Egypt?, Who were the four members of the Beatles?, Where is Nigeria?. These were ok. However when it came to answering the questions about myself, I found this alot harder. Some of these were - What colour are your eyes?, What time of the day were you born?, What was your first word?, What was your first school teacher called?. Out of this section of twenty questions, I only got six correct. I managed to get my date of birth and my name. I thought these two were trick questions and I stood there for a minute pondering the answer. The guy must of thought I was a simpleton. :D. However the question that really left me puzzled was " what is your blood group ? ". I had no idea and even now have no idea. I have since asked everyone I know and only a handful Know this detail about themselves. At every time of the day and night we are kept alive by our blood, yet it is something that most of us don't even consider. Do you know your blood group? Title: Re: Do you know your blood type? Title: Re: Do you know your blood type? Post by: Claw75 on May 21, 2006, 02:32:41 AM this raises an interesting point actually Sark. I know my blood group because I give blood twice a year. Was surprised to learn that only 7% of the eligible population give blood regularly. Something to think about!

Just wondered how the person asking the questions knew you only got six right?! Title: Re: Do you know your blood type? Post by: ifm on May 21, 2006, 02:35:24 AM No idea.
I can believe the psychiatrists excuse though :D Title: Re: Do you know your blood type? Post by: Josh on May 21, 2006, 02:39:35 AM I am AB negative, the rarest I think.
I'd give blood, but I am shit scared of needles. Title: Re: Do you know your blood type? Post by: Sark79 on May 21, 2006, 02:42:21 AM Yea I go to the diabetic clinic often and get blood taken. Most of the time I am just saying to myself " please don't faint and look like a wimp......please don't faint.... please don't faint". I am not afraid of needles. But I am afraid of pain. Unlike Jack Bauer, my body bruises. Most of the time when I am trying to make small talk with the nurse , it isn't about my blood type. I usually pick a thing on the wall and focus on it rather than the needle. Unfortunately on the nurses walls in this particular place, there are posters of men in beach clothes. Not my favorite thing to focus strongly on.

Just wondered how the person asking the questions knew you only got six right?! You had to give an honest answer. I knew I didn't know the answers to his questions. I guess I could have just lied and got all of them correct. I will do that next time. Title: Re: Do you know your blood type? Post by: Josh on May 21, 2006, 02:48:22 AM I'm not afraid of pain, which is why i don't understand my fear of needles.
I had a tattoo done a while back just to try get over my fear of needles. While typing this post I just lost £200, on a hand, I hate you all. I also hate the twat that called my preflop raise with jack 7 off, and beat my ace, king suited. Title: Re: Do you know your blood type? Post by: Robert HM on May 21, 2006, 09:38:36 AM O -ve, apparently called baby blood because any baby can receive it in an emergency, regardless of its actual blood type.
I hate needles but I do give blood, but not as often as I should, it's not the needles really it's the pain, I am allergic to pain, it brings me out in a scream. When I was a kid I had asthma and was allergic to various things which set it off, I was prescribed a series of injections to help combat it, during summer I had 18 weekly injections and the same the following year, I dreaded each of those 36 injections, it did no good and the following year I was told I grew out of it anyway! Title: Re: Do you know your blood type? Post by: londonpokergirl on May 21, 2006, 09:56:17 AM I only found out my blood group when I was in hospital giving birth to Declan
other than that wouldn't have known. Title: Re: Do you know your blood type? My father claims to be AB+, which is the rarest kind (slightly rarer than the negative variety?). O neg can be received by anybody, but AB+ can only be used for other AB+ patients! Title: Re: Do you know your blood type? Post by: Josh on May 21, 2006, 01:35:53 PM People with AB+ or neg can't remember which I am, but it's the rare one, are buggered, 'cause like you say, we can only receive blood off each other
Title: Re: Do you know your blood type? Post by: littlemissC on May 21, 2006, 01:45:51 PM A negative.found out when i was pregnant with my first child.both my children are A+ so i had to have injections to stop my body rejecting further babies.
Title: Re: Do you know your blood type? Post by: bolt pp on May 21, 2006, 01:46:36 PM It dos'nt matter to me i'm never letting anyone have any of my blood!!!
you see if you carry a donar card you have less chance of recieving heroic life saving measures from ambulence personel and doctors due to a secret goverment directive. they let you kick it and give your organs to someone on an nhs waiting list. the goverment statistics show one less person died on an nhs waiting list and one extra person died in an unrelated accident which over a long period of time is an eminently favorable statistic for the goverment. Title: Re: Do you know your blood type? Post by: I, Zimbra on May 21, 2006, 01:47:21 PM I had a chart somewhere that explains it all :D
O- can go to anyone, I know that much - you always see that in medical dramas like ER. I think AB- can go to AB+, but AB+ can only go to other AB+s... Title: Re: Do you know your blood type? Post by: b4matt on May 21, 2006, 01:48:19 PM I'm a bit embarassed to not know my type. I give blood regularly, haven't been for probably 2 years tho just realised 8)... i'm going this week now. wd sark
Title: Re: Do you know your blood type? Post by: Poppet7 on May 21, 2006, 01:55:52 PM Resus A negative... or something like that. The only thing I know about that blood type is that when I give birth to a baby I'll have to have a lot more injections than the 'average' woman. Which is great because I have a phobia of needles/injections. I'm very proud I managed to have my BCG and Mumps injections a few years ago, even though I did go green and faint, but I havent had the tetanus/polio thingy and refused to have an Op I desperately needed, so they just gassed me instead! :)
I feel really terrible about it, but I don't give blood. I won't give blood to find out what is wrong with me, let alone to give it willingly. Title: Re: Do you know your blood type? Post by: steeley68 on May 21, 2006, 01:57:53 PM Is there a B+ - as in Be positive? I think that's what I am. That's how I remember, it's my motto.

Title: Re: Do you know your blood type? Post by: happybhoy on May 22, 2006, 01:40:43 PM I'm ashamed to admit that the first time I gave blood it was for purely selfish reasons, a mate was having an 18th birthday party and few of us we're a bit skint and figured that if by having a pint of blood taken would mean that we would only have to buy 7/8th as much of a cargo as usual. I did go back later to give a 'positive karma' pint but alarmingly it came back as a different blood type as the first one.

I give every 6 months and it's the only decent thing I give back to the world. I won't give to charity until I'm debt free (that will be never) but they can have all my blood! and organs come to that if I die. |
