This weekend im going to buy myself an ipod but im not sure what each one does and how many songs they hold.

I dont want a really really expensive one because i wouldnt need it, so i have decided its 1 from 2.

I like the look of the ipod nano they come in 2 or 4 gb or there is the cheaper and more basic looking ipod shuffle in 1gb or 512mg.

What i want to know is how many songs will each mg/gb hold and what does the nano do that the shuffle doesnt?

The shuffle will hold approx 250 songs for the 1G and 125 songs for the 512mb

The Nano will hold approx 500 songs for the 2g & 1000 songs for the 4g

Shuffle does not have a screen so you dont know whats playing where the Nano has a colour screen which you can also store photos on and has built in games

My 4GB nano box claims 1000 tunes but I have 99 (9.5 hours) on mine and that's using 530MB. The battery seems to run out pretty quick but I have nothing to compare it to, it might be really good for all I know.

get the nano mate. I have a shuffle and it's ok but wish i had got the nano.

I only have 40 songs on my shuffle and I like the fact it is so basic.  I was mugged last week and the bloke saw the shuffle and aologised for wasting my time.

If your willing to look beyond ipod there are a lot of much better alternatives out there. Yeah the ipod looks great, but if money is an issue, you'd like your mp3 player to last more than a year and hold more than 500-1000 songs, then go for something else. There are lots out there.

Between me, my girlfriend and my pals who have got Ipods, we have never seen an ipod battery last more than 18 months, and its impossible to change them without sending it back to apple and they charge you a fortune for it. So much that they dont fix your ipod, they just send you a new one!!

tbh you need an ipod, if you go for another brand people just look at you funny!

Its tiny

It has a screen

It takes two AAA batteries which last 16 hours (or you can use rechargables)

Its easy to use for a computer dinosaur (drag and drop your music from "My music")

But the sad thing is your right. People do look at you strange if you dont have an ipod, even if the software is way easier to use in your non-apple mp3 player, you can hold 5x the amount of songs their ipod can hold, it can double up as a storage device and it lasts longer than a year.

it really depends on the quality of the audio track. if the audio track is of a very high quality then the file size will be a lot larger than if it was of mono radio quality. song length also has a big impact. if you are putting on albums by iron maiden, pink floyd and the such like then their tracks could extend well above 8 minutes each whereas S Club struggle above 3 minutes

I have a 20gig Ipod wheel, had it for about 2 years now and never had a problem apart from i reboot.
I play it through the car stereo and the home stereo, it is the nuts!!
Though i recently got a sony ericsson W800i mobile and that plays songs and also sounds great, radio too.

I have a Sony MP3 player. It's silver unlike Claw's pink one. I asked for the pink, but they were all out.

It is my 5th MP3 player. I got one it broke within a day. I took it back and got a replacement. That broke 2 days later.

I then switched brand to PHILIPS.  I had two of them and they both broke within a week. 

Each time I took them into the store, the engineer ( 16 year old newly left school engineer )  said  "ehh no idea mate it is broken". I had already told him that and was considering asking for a consultancy fee.

I then switched to my old faithful   SONY.  They never let me down and I love their products. 18 months on and it is still belting out my favorite tunes.

H bhoys n ghirls I bought one of these babies yesterday (cos it looked cool) and thought it would be handy when playing those longggggggggggg live poker games.. anyway its a brilliant bit of kit and i was real pleased with it EXCEPT it just didnt go loud enough... My daughter HEATHER HAS AN IPOD WHICH PLAYS MUCH LOUDER AND ALTHOUGH I lOVED THE SOUND QUALITY i DIDNT LIKE THE MAXIMUM VOLUME WHICH WAS LOUD BUT ERR JUST NOT LOUD ENOUGH.. ANYWAY I found out from sony that the volume on the Europe models is limited and after a bit of investigating i found out how to unlock the volume wooooohoooo. NOW we can play u2 in the way it was meant to be heard.. hehe anyway if you have one or know a mate who has one here is how to do it

information on unlocking the volume to your NW-A1000 and NW-A3000. Enjoy.

Press HOLD to put the player in hold mode.
Hold down LINK and press in order UP, DOWN, OPTION, UP, DOWN, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, LEFT, PLAY/PAUSE, OPTION.
Press HOLD to turn hold off. You will now be in test mode.
Press RIGHT to display menu items
Press UP/DOWN until you get to “OTHERS”
Press RIGHT to display next menu.
Press UP/DOWN until you get to “SP SET”
Press PLAY/PAUSE, “ON/OFF” is displayed.
Press OPTION, “ON/OFF” will be selected.
Press PLAY/PAUSE and it will be entered.
Exit play mode by pressing and holding BACK for more than a few seconds, release, and then turn the player off.

It makes your sony mp3 player MUCH better

to echo what the stallyon says, your battery life will depend on what bit rate your mp3 tracks are at. This also affects how many songs you can "fit" onto your mp3 player.

64kbps (kilobytes per second) - Listenable, but quite compressed. 1 album approx 20meg

128Kbps - Very acceptable quality for mp3. obviously about 40meg per album

384kbps - I believe the top bit rate for mp3's - 1 album = 120meg, I play these thru some pretty decent hi-fi equipment and can barely tell the difference with original cds, except at really loud volumes.

Ah I see, all mine are 128kbps which must be the default setting. It seems fine to me.

Dont waste your money on an Ipod, I think the Creative products are better value and better pieces of kit.

You can go to a place like the carphone warehouse and they will install a car kit (similar to a mobile phone one), where you can 'plug in' you iPod. £99 I think.

I went for the ATMT Storm on Amazon (just over £100, the cheapest 20Gb Mp3 player I've ever seen), got it in January, holds all my CDs, no problems :)

Or you can buy a cassette that goes into your stereo and plugs into your ipod (cost £15)

the "iDock" from Bose...Where you plug the ipod into a unit in whichever room you fancy, replaces the need for a stereo...fantastic sound and portable

But he has a mini disc car stereo. ;)

Much better to have the FM transmitter, you mount the holder and just drop the ipod into it and press play.

Two things, they dont like old car stereo's don't offer great reception - when I say old I mean 3 years +, some are better then others.

You can get alternatives for about a £5 importated from Japan on ebay - there is a cheap model (about  £10) that you could select your own band frequency - sitting behind/beside someone in traffic stealing radio 1's signal and subjecting everyone to Robert Johnsons greatest recordings or jeff Waynes War of The Worlds is a favourite pastime of a close personal friend of mine :)

I have a Sony Erricson phone 750i with a 256mb memory stick - holds approx 50 songs. I only ever listen to the first 6 though, cause by that time, I'm at my work. The added bonus is not having two lumps in my pockets...erm

I'm going to upgrade to the 810i - 512mb card, loads more songs and photos.

Had one for a while (probably near 2 years), very good indeed.
Love my gadjets!!
