Title: Computer help please
Post by: Poppet7 on May 26, 2006, 11:35:31 PM
My internet used to be really quick but now it takes ages. I can't access hotmail via msn, the laptop is constantly making a noise (the fan), when I type it doesn't appear on the screen straight away, when I try and click it'll take a while and it's the same with scrolling. It's like the computer freezes every 3 seconds for 2 seconds then goes again. I can tell it's this long by looking at this smiley  ;goodvevil;

Anyone have any suggestions/advice?

Thank you x

You've got a virus/spyware/malware infection.

or you need to clean your fan...

how long have you had it ?

Sounds like the hard drive could be on the way out, may have bad sectors.

Other thoughts include problems with spyware or viruses compromising the machine.

or you need to clean your fan...

I'd say not - fan is running because it's getting hot as the CPU is running all the time which is why the computer is slow.

LOL at Bongo... he obviously knows how much time I spend onl the laptop!

I've had it a year, it was second hand off of my dads mate and it's been perfect up until a week or so ago.

You said spyware/viruses... what is the best way to get rid?

Flushy - I felt underneath the laptop and it's warm but I have noticed it to get boiling sometimes as well as the sides of the laptop by the keys.

Remove everything that it warns you about, it creates a save point so don't worry about what it removes.
My lappy gets very hot, in fact every one i've ever owned has (5 now)

Hmm, download adaware and also run your anti virus scanner.

Adaware won't detect all the nasties (i'd guess it picks up <50%).

Anyways what Antivirus program do you run? Is it up to date? When was the last time you ran a scan?

No viruses mate, your firewall just detected the scan (which at least means it's working).
The link is 100% good, it is one of the very best scanners out there.

That surprises me i always thought it was the best adware scanner?

I meant anti virus not firewall.
I can promise that the link has no viruses.

Bit out of date now but here's an article:

http://windowssecrets.com/comp/050127/#story1

GIANT was bought by MS and is now MS Defender or whatever they call it.

Best advice is to use more than one for scans.

Interesting, i have 3 different scanners:
microsoft
spybot
adaware
If i run them in that order adaware still seems to find something the others missed.
What do you think the best one is?

Title: Re: Computer help please
Post by: Bongo on May 27, 2006, 12:46:08 AM
TBH they all seem to find something the others haven't picked up, which is why I wouldn't rely on only one.

SpySweeper has also been handy in the past removing an infection on a clients machine that wouldn't budge any other way (even manually!).
