Title: 3 card Irish
Post by: TightEnd on March 14, 2005, 08:55:28 AM
I am planning to play in an "Irish" tournament later in the week.

Beyond the basics, never having played it before, I would appreciate any advice/input on strategy/nuances that anyone could give!

Thanks in advance

Well I am the last person from whom to seek advice on playing any sort of poker, never mind "Irish", but as a curiosity, where is this tourney being played? I have only ever played Irish, or heard of it being played, in ring games.

3 card?

20 Irish (3 card) at Grosvenor Luton on Thursday. I assume Pot Limit

Props to the staff there for an interesting innovation to coincide with St Patricks day

(By the way the Monday night 50 shootout's now regularly with 40-50 runners have become established and popular)

(especially if you should win one beating the most successful Luton player this year heads up on the way ;))

You did WHAT? (cue chirp......).

And yes, great thinking by the Luton Management.

Is Irish like Hold'em, but you get three cards and have to fold one of them preflop?

irish follows the same rules as hold 'em, but each player starts with 3 (or more) cards.

the discarding happens after the flop, so that each player remaining in the hand has only two cards (as per hold 'em).

No. Aggression pays at 3 card Irish. Got to be more careful at 4 / 5 card but 3 card's not that different to HE.

Keep your draws then get hyper aggro, semi bluff everything and then bink when someone calls.

Seems to work at cash anyway.

Re-Potting is always good as well.  Especially against the table nit.

If there's a big made hand out there be careful unless you've got the nuts draw.

Plays similar to omaha in a way. You can bet bare aces and get them through but you've still got the draw if someone catches you out.

Always keep a set because you've got the same outs as a flush anyway.

If you suspect an overset (unlikely at 3 card) keep a draw. Nobody's going to pass anyway so just get coolered.

Don't overplay AA. It's likely to get muffed.

The more starting cards the better your final hand needs to be obviously. For example be very cautious with the arse end of a straight on the flop when playing 4 / 5 card.

In 4 / 5 card keeping Kx which has made top pair and a flush draw is better than keeping AA.

Personally I just bet the same as HE. Pot is over rated and often more expensive than people realise. Pot often leaves you over committed when you really didn't need to be.

Have fun!!
