Title: World Cup Heaven and Hell
Post by: Triple X on May 30, 2006, 12:16:46 AM
watching this at the moment on ITV

2 things come out of it.

1.  How many World Cup mistakes did Peter Shilton make?

- against Poland in 74 he let the ball slip under his body
- against Argentina in 86 he got outjumped by an argentinian midget.
- against germany in 90 he was slow to react to parker's deflection, was too old for the penalties and (though they didnt show it) was an embarrasement in the 3rd/4th place play-off

Now i only caught the end of Shilton's career but was he all he was cracked up to be coz he got over 100 caps yet i never rated him.

2.  I forgot that against Holland in 1994, before the Koeman 'foul' on Platt they themselves had an absolute fair goal wrongly ruled out for offside - yet all this country has done is blame the ref for not sending off koeman!! And we still had to win!!

Shilton was an excellent goalkeeper for a long time, one of if not the best in the world for several years IMO.

He was selected for England for the last few years when he was clearly past his best but there was no obvious heir apparent at the time as I recall. He would have had many more England caps except for playing alternate internationals with Ray Clemence (who I didn't rate as highly) for a few seasons.

At the very end of his career he was truly awful, he had lost all his spring.
