Title: Running Antes Post by: TightEnd on August 02, 2005, 02:02:58 PM Played the 1k at the Vic last night, about which the less said the better
However running antes were introduced at the 150-300 level (ie the fourth level) at 25 pp per hand which doubled to 50 pp per hand at 300-600 and so on Who has a lot of experience of playing in tournaments with running antes? how much should I adjust my play to allow for them? what should I know for next time? Title: Re: Running Antes Post by: Ironside on August 02, 2005, 02:56:30 PM running antes allow a better structure and stops the middle and end stage become a total crap shoot
it also gives everyone a reason to be in the pot as the blinds are now worth stealing dont know why but i seem to get better results with a running ante than i do without Title: Re: Running Antes Post by: Junior Senior on August 02, 2005, 03:07:13 PM i hate them!
a similar thread was started about this a while ago. they make pinching too much part of the game - i like to keep it honest! Title: Re: Running Antes Post by: Ironside on August 02, 2005, 03:09:54 PM i cannot get a steal passed in any game i play so disagree i think without the running ante you need to better at stealing
Title: Re: Running Antes Post by: Karabiner on August 02, 2005, 03:10:58 PM Seems to suit J4o specialists !
;) Title: Re: Running Antes Post by: TightEnd on August 02, 2005, 03:13:36 PM luckily the old fella won't see that post for a while sir!!!
ironside, it's got to suit the perennial stealers hasn't it? I can't get a steal through for toffee and I want to when there are antes in play......... Title: Re: Running Antes Post by: Ironside on August 02, 2005, 03:36:43 PM nah i just wait for big hands and look to get doulbed up as the stealers dont like to lay down with so much money in pot

The best place to practice playing with running Ante's is Stars. I'm with Ironside on this one - I think they make for a better game as it slows down the tournament reaching crap shoot status via a constant doubling of blinds. Its a pity more casino events don't have them, although I guess much of this is a fear of the hassle that they'd potentially create in a self-dealt event! Sheriff [rant] PS: I notice once again that the festival has the ridiculous payout structure where finishing 10th-18th in a 170 runner event gets results in you losing your tournament fee. Does anyone here actually like this idea? What's the point in having a prize structure where half those making the money don't actually win anything? [/rant] Title: Re: Running Antes Post by: Ironside on August 02, 2005, 04:16:07 PM the problem is they have used last years pay out structure where it was ony 750 + 75 to enter so the 1000 meant you won a little dont think the thought of that before annoucing the event thus the players have made a deal on 2nd day to solve the problem
Title: Re: Running Antes Post by: Gamblor21 on August 02, 2005, 04:42:56 PM i like running ante competitions, i think it induces more action with the extra money in the pot... when it gets late in a comp if you don't play for a couple of rounds it can really damage your stack! Also it is brilliant for the aggressive players as you can increase your chips without even getting a hand, always one of my favourites ;)
have to admit i really think that the prize structure in competitions has to be altered... there just too top heavy, in alot of these events its an acheivement to make the final by itself, yet you can make the final and hardly make a penny! An example was the 100 comps at newcastle in the recent festival (really good even tho i never got a sniff of a final, cash was ok tho ;)) for coming 10th you got 380, now anyone who made 180 would've been doing brilliant as a top up at least was nearly mandatory! The winner of this one was scheduled to pick up around 8000, there was a multi way deal i think tho involving around seven. Surely they should split the prize money more evenly, this would stop all the deals happening as the jump would be far less. 5000 for example would'nt have been a bad prize for the investment of a 100, now i think this has been touched upon before in another thread and some sort of new structure has to be implemented, across all of the casinos even tho the big top prizes look good for drawing people in! When these competitions get to the final they are more often than not a bit of a crapshoot, a change is needed or deals will continue being made as they make sense... now i think some of this has made sense tho i've probably babbled on a bit, english was'nt my best subject at school... come to think of it, not sure what was really! Drama and maths the 2 key assets for budding poker players... wish i'd done phsycology now at Alevel instead of Economics, tho i here Game theory helps! I best go do some reading! Cheers Ian Title: Re: Running Antes Post by: patman on August 02, 2005, 05:04:26 PM dont mind running antes as it does make you concentrate and play slightly more and not just wait for the crazy end game
