I personally don't think he was. I liked Ryu the best.

My friend and I were discussing this today. He claimed Guile was technically the best character and Pro-Gamers would agree on this.  I made a £20 bet that he wasn't recognised as the strongest character.

I had a look round on a few Google sites earlier . It looks like my mate may be right. 

It has been 10 years since I last played this game, but I can't recall Guile being the best character.

I played this all the time on the SNES when it came out. I was usually Guile myself. btw, Ken was slightly better than Ryu despite being a wee bit camp.

Yep I'm a Guile fan - always used to use him.  Only because I found his moves a lot easier to get to grips with - everything seemed to flow a lot nicer with Guile.

Guile was recognised as the best, but i always like playing as Ken or Ryu.


How were they different? Were they not identical in every way?

I hated playing as Chung-Li, Dhalsim, Zangief or Blanka.  They were the worst characters by a mile.

Ken's Dragon Punch went out to the side more, he also did 2 rolls on one of his throws where as Ryu did one. The damage difference was zero though, it was just character traits.

On later games Ryu has better fireball abilities and Ken had better Dragon Punches.

Dunno half the names you are referring to - give me Kuma or Panda from Tekken every day of the week. Us animals giving you humans a good slapping - oh hour after hour of fun and joy to be had there!!!  :D

Dhalsim and Zangief were awesome in the right hands, f'ing found them both hilariosus characters.
Blanka and E-honda were brilliant if you played on a sega and used an auto pad.. infact blanka was pretty unbeatable if you just left shock on.
Oh and Ryu and ken were pants, Akuma was far better as he combined both their best moves, and he looked cool.

I just typed Street Fighter 2 into Amazon.  I am tempted to buy one of the Ryu plug and play street fighter games.

Guile was a weak character because his moves took too long to pull off.

Ryu, Ken, and Chun Li were way ahead of the other characters.

Ryu was never better than Ken, the slanted dragon punch being the reason.

No1 could beat the E  Honda underarm  repeated punch( ending in a huge blast punch)    It was boring but it beat them all, everntually.  Even the sonic boom.
All u had to do was continiously hit the punch button very fast and very hard and he would always own the rest.

I used to believe this till someone showed me where Blanka's weak spot was. (Left of his head if I remember correctly.)

Against a skilled opponent, Blanka is little more than a sitting duck when he does his shock.

Backflip or jump over, then reverse fireball.
Or using akuma, jump up and fireball down at an angle

I saw it today for £7.99 for the PS2.  I was tempted.  However I feel if I buy it, then that will be more hours of my life wasted.  It was a combination of all the different street fighter games on one disk.

Chun Li was by far the best Street Fighter character. not only was her mid-air acrobatics an awesome display of sheer technical skillbut she was oriental in a short skirt

Guile was easy to get on a sonic boom/ sonic kick roll, you just had to duck/back (down and left) to charge both moves and then decide which one to employ at the last minute - i.e. if the enemy stayed away, sonic boom them - or if they jumped toward you, sonic kick them.

I suspect that's why he was popular.

Vega was really strong when the computer controlled him. I always found him harder to beat than Sagat or M Bison.

Anyone remember that if E Honda stood there doing the slap-attack thing that Balrog could never reach him?

Yup even on level 7 Balrog couldn't outjump it!

I've just read that on the ORIGINAL SFII Ken didn't have the santing dragon punch - it only came in after Super SFII.

Meaning Ken and Ryu were identical (except for one throw) in the original game.

The punch came in the Street Fighter '92 champion edition :D  ;tk;

has anyone got pictures of these characters as a bit of nostalgia, ahh those were the days
