Thanks Jim. AOL only support Netgear products. I have AOL and I use a Belkin router, because I believe Belkin products/service are better than Netgear. What this means is that I speak to Belkin when I have problems with my router, but if you have a Netgear router, AOL can diagnose the problem(s) too. Title: Re: Wireless Router?. Post by: The_nun on June 24, 2006, 02:34:20 PM I have AOL and have used a Linksys for the last 1 1/2 yrs at least...AOL don't "support" this product but I just get my assistance from Links ..only needed it twice in all that time though..
Title: Re: Wireless Router?. Post by: Ginger on June 24, 2006, 02:39:16 PM As long as it's an ADSL router, you'll be able to use any one that you want. Linksys IMO are the easiest to set up but stay clear from the WAG354G, it's having major issues. Also if you know little about what you are doing, avoid D-Link... they're a complete pain.

So what sort of gear should i be looking at and what kind of prices? Also would Ebay ok to get these items? Title: Re: Wireless Router?. Post by: Nem on June 24, 2006, 02:46:31 PM Also would Ebay ok to get these items? If they have good feedback, then yes. If your PC/Laptop isn't Wireless Enabled, you'll need to buy a wireless card. Title: Re: Wireless Router?. Title: Re: Wireless Router?. Post by: Bainn on June 24, 2006, 03:30:29 PM Dewi, are you sure about requiring a PCI slot? A PCI slot is an internal expansion slot that is white in colour, are you mistaking the abbreviations for a PCMIA slot? That is an expansion port designed for laptops.
I know of no such USB to PCI adapter being for sale anywhere. If oyur Desktop has USB ports, why not get a USB network adapter, take the PCI one back to the shop and swap? I am assuming your setting up a WIRELESS router and network, so make sure you get a wireless USB dongle/adapter, of course if your going to use a wired connection, then get the USB network adapter. Side note, if you are going wireless, what rating is the network? G or sometimes 54G is fast, but technically you will need a G/54G wireless adapter which will only achieve full speed when plugged into a USB2/HI-Speed USB port, basically any machine built in the last couple of years sholud have this newer faster USB. You can used older B/11B type wireless adapter on a G/54G but it is a pain. Title: Re: Wireless Router?. Post by: Dewi_cool on June 24, 2006, 04:13:13 PM Bainn,

Post by: Bainn on June 24, 2006, 06:31:42 PM Sorry for late reply Dewi but been playing and building/setting up a pc for someone at same time.
You can get a LAN card to fit into a PCMIA slot, this normally refers to a WIRED connection to the router, ie, a cable plugs into back of router then into the LAN card. However, you can also get a WIRLESS LAN card to slap into a PCMIA slot, this connects to the router with no wires what so ever via the medium of radio waves. They are two distinct and seperate LAN cards. I'm still not quite clear as to whether you are setting up a WIRED or WIRELESS network, or what exactly you mean by already having a "dongle" in your possesion. Title: Re: Wireless Router?. Just check to make sure it is wireless first though, "wireless enabled" does not necessarily mean it actually is believe it or not. Go onto the makers website and check the model. I had this with my toshiba and again with the samsung i use now, both were supposedly wireless (even have stickers on them and the software preinstalled) but neither are. |
