He was one of the most interesting people to talk to off the subject of poker, while at the same time almost saturated in the game, the stories, lore and study of it. A stickler for the rules, I was surprised to find he had a hugely varied lot of interests and a sharp sense of humour off the table - when I poached him to my home game two years ago, he also unfailingly brought us some kind of cake, which endeared him to me immensely.
An eloquent writer with a healthy dose of eccentricity, I am saddened to hear that he did not recover from his recent illness. He must have had one of the most enjoyably varied careers of anyone I know - included is his having written many early Batman episodes. Great. It is a shame he will no longer be gracing the Gutshot with his newspaper-reading presence, or the many publications for which he wrote. |
