Title: What would you do?
Post by: divingduck on June 28, 2006, 07:08:23 PM
Its deep in the WSOP main event ,  theres 55 left in, youre guaranteed 145k but after the next elimination that goes up to 173k. You havent played a single hand in well over an hour and had your stack blinded down from 660k to just over 500k.Then UTG you get dealt  Jh Js , it looks like a monster and figuring on making good use of your tight image decide to raise to 90k (blinds 10k/20k with 2k ante). Everyone folds quickly around to the BB (Tim Phan) who flat calls. A day earlier you've seen him call from the BB a massive all-in raise with A7 and lose to AK.

Flop comes  8c 8d 2h

Phan checks....

There is 206k in the pot ...whats your next move?

I bet big again.

Reading this is giving me a feeling of horrible dread. I'm getting the feeling that this was your exit hand and he called you with something like 86 and now he's slow playing you. Tell me it's not so!

classic horrible siuation

you check, he moves in on the river and you have no idea what to do, you bet and he comes over the top and you have no idea what to do.

In these situations i am usually thinking 'what can he call with on that flop?'
if he has 99,77,10 10, i think he raises to findout where hes at
QQ, KK i think he raises with the fear of an ace falling (probably raise pre flop so i doubt he has either of these)
A8, 22, 88 i think he traps you

you have a tight image so he suspects a big pocket pair and he is trying to trap you with one of the last 3 hands, i check now and hope for a cheap showdown and would probably fold to a huge bet on the end.

Love to know what happened, i suspect you are going to say he had 33 for some reason.

for me it depends on what the average chip stack is and how much the guy has left. You now have 260k left....not a lot really. I would be tempted to risk it and move all in. you have table image on your side which means rather a lot ...(to me anyways).

Then again, this is exactl;y the sort of hand I always fly out of the tourney with.

I would check.

Now he would put me on something like A-K as opposed to a pp. Therefore, if he has it he may bet less on the next round because he may fear you folding to his allin given the time of the tournament etc. If he doesn't have it he is likely to bluff.  So it would seem that by checking and calling his river bet you lose less when you are behind and win more when you are ahead.

this all depends on how many chips he's got left though.
If he too is down to around 200k, and wants to get paid, he might aswell move all in...there would be value to call anyways.

Dying to find out how this hand ended though.

OK, heres what really happened, he checked the flop to me....I thought for a good while and considered what hands he could have flat called pre flop with. I dismissed AA KK QQ & AK as he would undoubtedly have re-raised from the earlier play I had witnessed. The flat call indicated to me either a small pair or a weakish Ace, or possibly something like KQ sooted. Looking at the board I could see only 3 hands that had me beat....A8 , 88 and 22 so with over 200k already in the pot I didnt want to give him any value to call a flop bet with over cards or hit a set with a smaller pair. Also I realised that a weak bet would give him an opportunity to put me all-in and face a horrble decision ( he had about 2 million chips). Its hard to describe the pressure in these situations and merely thinking straight requires immense effort. However for the reasons described above I decided to push all-in and pray he hadn't hit. Well he called immediately and flipped up A8 , the turn was a 3 and river came a 9 and I was out. The guy that finished 54th was out about half a nanosecond after me picking up an extra 28k....maybe I should have pondered a little while longer.  ;D

thats pretty sweet.

but doesn't anyone think when loose aggressive players check on a flop like 884 or 559 it spells trouble? normally they'd bet out on these sorta flops because it's less likely you've hit?
just a thought..

Maybe so, but the point is that with under cards on the turn and river, which ever way I played it after the flop he was always going to put me all in at some stage and no way would I have folded. I knew before going all-in there was a risk he'd hit the board hard, but no way was I going to give him a cheap turn card if he'd missed.

you made the right play.
If you already know that you're going to go all-in one way or the other it's best to be the aggressor in a situation like this.
