we have tried a some systems that don't work so at least mclaren can rule them out without 'experimenting' in friendlies.

I for one am absolutely gutted that we played like that and got knocked out by an inferior team.

McLaren is such a negative coach i fear another 8 years of the same kind of thing.

ha ha ha didnt you see englands performance in the world cup?

Not much really! He peaked after his 7th game when we beat zie Germans 5-1 on thier own soil and 67 games later with no major tournament, Im sure we can all point our fingers at the ice man and say "Have you actually bought the English National game forward. Sadly I believe not.

I suppose having faith in Owen Hargreaves can be classed as a positive. He looked absolutley brilliant yesterday. I like to see an under fire player proving our ruthless media wrong. Well done Owen.

I agree, Portugal offered nothing yesterday. To be fair, we didn't offer to much either until Rooney went off. Funny how when England are faced with a crisis such as that, tactics go out the window and the boys rallyed together and realy gave it a go. Makes you wonder what Sven actully did as England Coach.

Apart from pocket £25 million not alot, although you cant blame him for missing the penalties. 50K a week and cant score from 12 yards. You dont mind if they are good penalties and the keeper makes a good save but that was just fuc**ng Embarrasing

i dont care what anyone says. outwith robson and ramsay sven is the best manager england have ever had.   3 tournys 3 quater finals.   except the lose to N.Ireland he only lost one competitive game as mamanger against Brazil. the other 2 were penaltys.

a bit nieve at times  but he done a great job and has left and probably the right time  and not over stayed his welcome...

england will be better in years to come for his rein...

altho appointing mclaren is a joke.   sven has stedied the ship tightened the defence and shown england and helped the players relise they can win things... now they need a new guy who will be a little more attackin. to build on what sven has done   and i dont think mclaren is that man at all.

Time will tell with Mclaren ... BUT he is now England manager and as such should have the support of every Englishman .... I wish him LUCK and the ability to play players in positions that they know and are comfortable with, and hope he instills a desire to kill games off and attack teams in the second half of a football match.

I think the Scotts get more of a buzz when we under-achieve instead of when they actually win games (Which doesn't happen very often!) The reality of the matter is that we've been in these major tournaments where as Scotland hav'nt and the SPL Has to be one of the most boring and predictable leagues in the world.
And what happened in Aberdeen, where an 8 yr old kid was punched in the face by a fully grown man, because he was wearing an england shirt!! Sick!

But none of this really matters, because we all know deep down, England are a better footballing nation than Scotland, managers aside, and always will be..

i aint gonna disagree with anything u say...

full grown man shouldnt punch boy....    was it one of us on here no.

are england better than scotland yes
will they always be.  who knows how can you predict the future.?

I think the rivalry between Scotland & England is great. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Scotts.  If either of us lose, we can't wait to bring each other down which is a healthy banter situation. Im sure if it were the other way round, I would be the first to get on the wind up case. Sometimes people take football politics way to seriously (The incident with the kid for example). Thats just unneccessary but shows what our society is like today.
To sum our performances up as an englishman : We wer'nt good enough, simple as that. Tactics were wrong, players didn't perform to thier full potential and hot headed incidents such as the rooney situation cost us big time! But..... Theres always next time!!! (Seems like thats all we seem to say though! :-( )

Not a bad track record if you ask me. What is it, lost 5 out of 40? Don't think a new manager is gonna help a great deal, new players maybe.

I said this a while ago.

Sven won Serie A with Lazio, he cant have done that without knowing what he was doing!

His record with England is excellent.

The problem i am sure came about given that he wanted nothing more than to get out of the job! Hard for someone to do thier job well when they are not motivated!

Flushy answer me one question honestly,

Would you have picked the squad he did, used the formations he did and played Beckham forever?

Every serious fan, manager and pundit alike wouldn't have.

No, thats probably why i am not an international manager :D

Like i say, what was his motivation to do well? The press hate him, the fans hate him, the FA hate him!

He picked and played a safe team, so as not to upset anyone and just hoped to get through the group.

I don't think Sven did a bad job but i don't think he did a great one either. Really he got england to 3 quarter finals, which for the first two tournaments was maybe about commensurate with england's true ranking status. Although had Rooney not been injured against portugal in euro 2004, we would have had an excellent chance of winning it.

In this tournament we had the players to go better but realistically we didn't perform as we can. Sven has to carry part of the blame for that. There's lots of debate amongst armchair managers about his tactics here and there and whether he could have done better, but one thing that stands out as a very bad decision was his choice to bring three strikers, two of them carrying injuries, and a kid with no top level experience.

Rooney made an almost miraculous recovery from his injury, one that has kept many other players out for longer. Despite this miracle, once Owen had succumbed we were left paperthin up front with zero options but the joker up sven's sleeve, which he failed to use.

Sven didn't wring the best out of a group of excellent players so has to carry the can a little for that.

My verdict on sven overall....did an ok job, handled things professionally, made some tactical errors and was slightly negative in his approach at times. I liked the guy though, thought he dealt with the inevitable tabloid crap that was thrown his way well, manage to fit in a couple of affairs to keep everyone entertained and kept a smile on his face the whole time. I wish him all the best.

Either that or they bribed a few referees.

No, he only spent £171million on players, so it would have been hard not to win the league.

6 teams spent over £100m that year.
