Title: MONTE CARLO - THE FINAL
Post by: tikay on March 19, 2005, 02:06:56 PM

Afternoon to you all from a grey & dreary Monte Carlo.

The big Final starts in 2 hours, & before then, blonde will try & set the scene for you.

Stay tuned, as they say.....(ever wondered who "they" are?).

What was the result of the 1060 last night ?

Title: Re: MONTE CARLO - THE FINAL
Post by: tikay on March 19, 2005, 02:11:59 PM

Hi Mike (luckyblind).

I was kinda hoping nobody would ask that question. Feel awful, really awful, truth to tell, & have taken FAR too many tabs. Hard work is a great anaesthetic, so gotta keep busy! But thanks for asking.

Title: Re: MONTE CARLO - THE FINAL
Post by: tikay on March 19, 2005, 02:14:18 PM

I will sort the result of the 1,000 for you soon as poss Mike. I am sorry we "gave up" before it finished , but there were 2 guys heads-up, & I did not have a clue who they were. And I was wrecked. And Mrs C was "tired & emotional", & I did not wanna let her walk to the taxi rank alone. Ever the gent. Ever the perv.

The Finalists - where are they from?

Well, we have two French guys, one who resides in Paris, the other who has escaped & now lives in Marbella. Two Americans, one from LA, the other from the home of Boeing, Seattle. A Russian from Moscow, a Dutchman, a Brit, and the mandatory Scandie.

Seating details are next........

Title: Re: MONTE CARLO - THE FINAL
Post by: tikay on March 19, 2005, 03:44:13 PM
Seat 1, Romain Feriolo, 475,000 chips.

Seat 2, Abdulaziz Abdullaziz, 181,000 chips

Seat 3, Ben Grundy, 90,500 chips

Seat 4, Kevin Seeger, 364,500 chips

Seat 5, Mikhail Ustinov, 68,300 chips

Seat 6, Brandon Schaeffer, 488,500 chips

Seat 7, Rob Hollink, 384,000 chips

Seat 8, Alexander Stevic, 57,500 chips

Average stack is about 250,000. So we have three Billy Low-Stacks, two Bertie Big Stacks, & three who are neither one nor the other.

Romain, Abdulaziz & Kevin do not appear to have any meaningful "live" experience.

Brandon & Alexander have both won an EPT already this season, Alexander in Barcelona, & Brandon in Deauville.

Ben Grundy plays a lot online, & a fair bit of cash, but he does not have much of a track record in bricks & mortar tournament poker. Wherever he finishes today, it will be far & away his biggest ever win. Ben has his own blog, "milkybarkids poker blog".

Mikhail does not speak much English, & I don't speak much Russian, so I cant tell you much about him I'm afraid. The Pokerstars "factsheet" (thank you Brad!) suggests he won a tourney in Moscow last year, but I cant corroborate that.

And finally, Mr Hollink. Rob has easily the most experience of big time tourney poker amongst these guys, & is very well known throughout Europe. But it would surprise many to know that if he finishes 4th or better today, it will be his biggest everv payday in tournament poker. Rob plays a lot of online Sit'N'Gos, too, & makes a small fortune by concentrating his online activities to just these. A real tough competitor at the table, too.

Next, we will see whom the movers & shakers of the poker world think will win today.

But before we do that, just a word to let you know that it is now 5pm, the scheduled start time, and there is no sign of the thing starting yet. Nobody is sat down at the Final table, & we have not begun the "fanfare" & intros. So whilst I may be waffling away here, you are not missing anything.

So who thinks who will win?

The overwhelming fave seems to be Rob Hollinck. He's the pick of Rumit, Isobelle Mercier, Mathilde, El Blondie, Pete Singleton, Bushy, Richard Gryko, Simon Nowab, & Martin de Knijff.

Simon Aces Trumper plumps for Kevin Seeger, as does Willie Tann.

Mel Lofthouse & Ariston both go for Brandon Scheaffer.

And Xuyen Bad Girl Pham said "I not know who in Final, so how me tewll u who win?". Bless her.

And if YOU have a fave, or someone you'd like to see win, let us know by posting in this thread. If you are not a registered blonde forum member, registration is easy, takes about 30 seconds, & is free. So register if you wanna interact with the rest of the blondeites.

Nearly ready now. There are three row sof tiered seating on three sides of the brilliantly lit TV table, and every seat is taken.

At the moment the tv "warm up man" is asking the crowd to "practice" cheering. Practice cheering? Only in France.....

I'm a friend of Kevin Seeger's from back in the states.  This is a great coverage.   His nickname is Dude.

Title: Re: MONTE CARLO - THE FINAL
Post by: tikay on March 19, 2005, 04:22:56 PM
Now Thomas Kremser is introducing the players. Abdullaziz Abdullaziz, who I have never heard of before this week, got a huge cheer, but I guess that could be because we are in France, & he's a Parisian.

Title: Re: MONTE CARLO - THE FINAL
Post by: tikay on March 19, 2005, 04:24:39 PM

Hi Stumpy, welcome aboard, & we wish "Dude" well.

Can you comment on his thinking last night when he laid down KK to a small bet on a flop of J-7-3 rainbow. It had us all agog here!

Title: Re: MONTE CARLO - THE FINAL
Post by: tikay on March 19, 2005, 04:26:00 PM

I gather they have "dropped back" the blinds to 3k-6k. Ben said he was delighted!

Great job as always Tikay - my tip is Brandon Schaeffer - the guy's on a hot streak!

Title: Re: MONTE CARLO - THE FINAL
Post by: Stumpy on March 19, 2005, 04:29:24 PM
If Dude laid down that hand it shows that he's playing his best game.  He must have seen something in the other player.  Do you remember how much he raised preflop?

Title: Re: MONTE CARLO - THE FINAL
Post by: tikay on March 19, 2005, 04:29:45 PM
Action began at exactly 5.30 pm.

Thomas announced the blinds will reduce to 3k 6k, running ante 500, 1 hour levels.

a hello, and thank you, from the American states for your coverage. so that hand went down as reported: Kevin laid down pocket K's to a pot-sized bet after the raggedy flop? guess he thought he ran into rockets? or just really wanted to make the final table with a workable stack? who knows?

i've watched his online play and he has game. let's hope cards come his way today. thx again!

I think after catching that lucky break with KQh vs AK, I bet Dude needed a breath.  He's good enough to win this thing.  Don't count him out.

Since you asked Tikay, I'm tipping Ben to win. This is based on nothing more than the fact than he's got a history of winning stuff from unlikely situations. He once beat me at StreetFighter (legendary 90's computer game) playing the game from behind a curtain, through which he couldn't see the screen. If anyone can pull it off, it's him...

MAN OVERBOARD!

Two of the short stacks clashed.

Alexander Stevic moved in with JJ, & Russian Mikhail Ustinov took him on with QQ.

Flop bought the J to send poor Mikhail tumbling out.

Mikhail Ustinov picks up 59,500 for exiting in 8th place.

Thanks Easycure.

I chatted with Scott today - he is a lovely fella, & we cant wait to see him here in Europe again soon.

Brad? That's Brad "Otis" Willis, the official PokerStars chronicler of events. Yes, he has been SO helpful to blonde, & we are very grateful to him. We gather information as a team, then use it independently. Perfect.

The skank debate? I think it's awful to call Shana such a thing, but I suppose it's not meant seriously. But I genuinely never knew what the expression meant. I wish I'd never asked now.

And laying down those pocket Kings? WOW!

Thanks Easycure. I cant wait to get home & get to bed, I've felt really dreadful the whole week, and I dont feel any better even now. And I must have over 100 e-Mails that I need to start replying to!

Poor Julian has been looking after me good as gold though, he's been a great friend to me. Anyways, back to the action......

Abdullaziz has some weird headphones on, & is jigging to the music.

Brandon has large, quite expensive headphones, & he's jigging around happily too.

And Rob has what seems to be a regular i-pod & earpieces. He aint doing no jigging though. He has a sort of laconic, laid back, seen it all before look about him. Occassionally, he raises an eyebrow at one of the young guns as if to say "you wanna mess with me, boy?". He has great table presence & image. In fact, when he curls his lip & scowls, he reminds me of Marlon Brando as The Godfather.

You are not missing much folks, it's a bit "flat" at the moment. We have to remember that these fellas are playing for a helluva lot of money.

But it will loosen up soon, for sure.

It varies Stumpy. Vienna & Deauville were quite quick, Copenhagen took hours & hours but was thrill a minute stuff.

Warming up now though!

Romain & Alex clash, Alex moves in, Romain says "lets do it baby".

Romain is ahead with A-T, & it looks like curtains for Alex with his KQ.

But this is poker, & the flop comes an amazing A (see ya Alex baby?) K (I'm not dead yet Romain) K (whahoo!).

AKK!

Romain catches his second pair on the river, but Alex doubles through.

Dude Seeger has been laying down to the re-raise.  How does his stack look?

Title: Re: MONTE CARLO - THE FINAL
Post by: tikay on March 19, 2005, 06:21:20 PM

His stack looks just great!

I think the blinds have just gone to 5k-10k, running ante 1k, meaning a cost of 21k per round just to sit still. I need to confirm that though.

Rob now trying to make his mark on this table. He R'd 30k & waited for Romains reaction. Romain gave him a wry look. Rob gave him a grade one scowl. Romain passed.

I think Rob is gonna try & dominate now, but these young guns dont do fear, dont do respect, and dont do suck-up. Then again, that wont bother Rob - he dont subscribe to any of them either......

How are the chip stacks?

Title: Re: MONTE CARLO - THE FINAL
Post by: tikay on March 19, 2005, 06:34:22 PM

WOW, now we've got REAL poker.......

Romain has been trying to dominate, but young Brandon, the Deauville winner, is looking more & more like a quality act.

We just had a monster pot of 450k, which Romain bet every strreet, & Brandon called every street.

Board was A K 6 T T.

When Romain bet 130k on the nd, it looked like he did not want a call, & Brandon seemed to know exactly where he stood with his raggedy kickered A & called pretty much instantly.

Brandon showed A-4. Romain showed 8-7.

GREAT call Brandon!

Abdullaziz put up a great show, but in his exit hand, he was a shade unlucky to try & run a bluff when his oppo had a hand. Abdullaziz had K-6, Romain was not bluffing THIS time, he had 88, hit his set on the flop, & filled up on the end!

Luca Pagano just wandered past - he looks immaculate in a black suit, white shirt, & gold tie, very posh. Kevin O'Connell, our fashion policeman, said he thinks Luca has been for a job interview. I could not help but notice that Luca has huge feet - his shoes are like canoes. Centuries of grape treading in the Pagano family line I guess....

Just seen the Aces again, but this one was a real cliffhanger. Alex had AA, Romain had Q-T, Alex was all-in.

Flop came A high, but ALL hearts, Alex not got a heart in his hand. So Alex got top set, Romain has a heart, so he's on the flush draw.

Blank blank sees a relieved Alex survive........

We start the Heads-Up battle like this:

Brandon Scheaffer, 1,120,000 chips.

Rob Hollink, 1,094,000 chips.

It's 350k to the runner-up, & 635k to the winner. (That's in Euros).

atleast they aint playing for lira

Maybe Junior, but I don't think Rob will wanna chop. I think he will fancy himself to outplay Brandon.

It's really almost impossible to concentrate on this Update now. I am SURROUNDED by Scandies playing "online" on their laptops - dozens & dozens of them, & they are cackling away like cackling things.

No idea Ironside - I saw Daniel Larsson & Gus Hansen sat next to each other last night, each with laptop, each playing 3 or 4 tables at a time. It was not $1-$2 either.....And YES, they WERE on different sites.

pretty obvious where Hanson was playing..............

dr tom thought gus was playing on one of the $2 tv tables on poker night live

but he wasnt sure but the guys user name was gus hansen but
according to our man on the spot tikay gus was still in the main event here

so question is does gus hansen play $2 only SnG to get on TV?

Actually, no - he was NOT playing there.

And as for Larsson, it would not befair to say where he was playing........

Well Hanson isn't likely to play under his own name on any site other than his own eh?
Not a good advertisement really.......

They have bought out the winners money, & its in an open briefcase. The money is all in crisp, new, 100 Euro notes - & there are too many to close the briefcase lid......

Not much Carlo. It seems to me that Rob is working on a coup to trap Brandon, trying to get him teed up as it were. Brandon is no fool, & he's a lovely guy, but you have to think Rob oughta be too good for Brandon.

Post by: tikay on March 19, 2005, 10:01:46 PM
Rob just tried to spring the trap with 2 pair, but Brandon was not playing ball. Even so, a 240k pot goes Rob's way.

Title: Re: MONTE CARLO - THE FINAL
Post by: tikay on March 19, 2005, 10:06:32 PM

The heads-up battle seems to be slowly moving in Rob's favour, but I cant get a feel for their relative chip stacks.

The crowd watching from the stands has not reduced at all, & includes Greg Raymer, Willie Tann (& Mrs Tann), & Rolf Slotboom. By the way, at the "Welcome Cocktail Party" earlier in the week, Greg Raymer was called up on to the stage by his sponsors PokerStars to deliver a little speech. He looked the bizz in a well-cut black suit & white shirt, but the open toed sandals betrayed his nationality.....

Hi Rolandinho, I've been doing these Live Updates all week & thought nobody was ever gonna ask that question....

But now you've asked.....The TV programme - "Poker 425" - first airs at 11pm this Wednesday, and is repeated every night, same time, same place. We shall be recording it on Wednesday afternoon. And we are hoping to take a film crew to Dublin for the Irish Open, so maybe we'll get some nice stuff there, too, for the following week's show.

We have just had our first all-in of the heads-up battle. The chips had been gradually moving in Brandon's direction, when suddenly, Brandon, for the very first time, says "all-in". Rob called in a trice. Flop was TT3. Brandon had 3-4 (two pair), Rob had T-8 (top set).

As soon as the cards were on their back, Brandon realised he'd walked into a trap, & left his seat, walking away from the table in disgust.

Rob had his man on the ropes now, & two hands later, set Brandon all-in.

And the winner olf the EPT/PokerStars Grand Final is......

Title: Re: MONTE CARLO - THE FINAL
Post by: tikay on March 19, 2005, 10:33:42 PM
Rob Hollink

Title: Re: MONTE CARLO - THE FINAL
Post by: tikay on March 19, 2005, 10:36:42 PM

So, this time the old guard prevailed. He was the selection of many, & his guile got him through in the end. It really seemed to be that Rob was setting Brandon up from some way out, & sprung the trap twice in the last 3 hands, each time with 2 pair.

But well done to both of them.

Just spoke to Simon Trumper, who told me he had shared a table with Rob last week in Vienna. Rob had told him that he was having the worst run of "form" in his poker career.

And I have been joined by Willike Tann, who says Rob said exactly the same thing to him.

Even better, Rob told Simon Trumper that Simon had said "dont worry, it will change soon". Too right it did!

So thats nearly it from tikay for tonight.

I shall be updating our News Page tomorrrow, for the first time in 3 days - sorrry about that, but I am sure you all understand.

And thank you to all the blondeites. We have increased our Forum Membership significantly & broken all records for site traffic to blonde this week, thanks to you guys.

Apologies to all the peeps to whom I owe e-mails & letters, I hope to start catching up tomorrow.

We will be in Dublin next week, when hopefully my flu/bronchitis will have passed, & I will be playing again. But we WILL be doing Live Updates again next week, whatever happens.

We've been overwhelmed by the nice things you guys have said, so it lookslike we are stuck with each other, eh?
