Title: Tricky Question
Post by: Rod Paradise on July 04, 2006, 04:20:02 PM
In London Spurs and Arsenal could do it, as could Chelsea and West Ham. Both
Manchester City and United could also do it. Everton and Rangers could do
it, but not Liverpool or Celtic. The only British clubs that could do it
this season are Man United (who would probably prefer not to) and Arsenal
(who have gone closest so far and are desperate to do it). It would take
Everton and City the longest of the clubs named to do it.

There is only one other British club that could do it. Who are they and what
is it?

BTW I don't think Arsenal coould do IT this year - but it's arguable.....

I'm sure I've heard this before but I can't for the life of me remember what it is.  I think it's not what you think it is if you know what I mean.

It is absolutely genuine Kev. No wind up at all.

Not relevant in this case.

Bigger clue - What Can Liverpool and Celtic NOT get that the other teams have?

Is it Blackburn?

If it is I know the answer I think.

What are Arsenal desperate to do?

It can't be winning anything as the other teams are in with a shout too, except in Europe, but Arsenal aren't anymore desperate to win any European Cup than any other side.

I guess more importantly, what are Arsenal dying to do that Man U would rather not do?

Just thinking out aloud.

I meant the answer might be to win a various selection of trophies, one of which is now obsolete, hence why Celtic and Liverpool can't make the full collection.  Does that make sense? I'm confusing myself!

I've emailed this to a couple of mates.  Here's the first guess back:

Newcastle and win the UEFA Cup (after getting kicked out of the Champions League)?

Title: Re: Tricky Question

and here's another mate's guess:

Too many "coulds" in thsi riddle to make much sense but as you asked - how about Hearts and win a European final (note I didn't say the European Cup) for the first time?

I think this takes care of Man Ud who could end up winning the EUFA cup final (a trophy they have never won) by being knocked out of the European Cup.

Everton and City aren't in Europe so will have to wait at least a year and all the other teams are in Europe and could all conceivably win a European trophy they have never previously won apart from Liverpool who as everybody knows have won 5 European cups and 3 EUFA cups! Only problem I can't remember if Celtic have won the EUFA cup (I don't think they have) so I''m not sure why they can't do it - although they were in the Cup winners Cup final recently although why that should be relevant god only knows..

Oh hell, as they are in the EUFA Cup, I'll go for Gretna instead...

Of course there mioght be some Welsh or Northern Ireland team I haven't thought of...

Jeez, this is worse than work...

He was SO close. Then he headed the wrong way.....

Another clue, in fact one of the 2 answers required..... Aberdeen are the only other British team who can do IT - they are in the same boat as Everton & Man City in that they would take longest to possibly do it.

(I'll pm you the answer if you want - or post it up tomorrow if everyone wants it).

Win the European Cup PLUS another European trophy.

Liverpool and Celtc can't as they have already.

Man U can but it would mean winning the Uefa Cup which they don't want to do as it would mean an early CL exit.

Arsenal can by winning the Champions League which they almost did last year.

Aberdeen have won the CWC and so could do it by winning the Champions League a few years from now.

They are the only British teams that could possibly win all 3 European cup competitions at some point in their history.

Due to the Cup-Winners Cup now out of the equation no-one else can possibly do this.

It would take Everton and Manchester city longer to do this because The Cup - Winners cup is the only European trophy that they have won so-far.

  Am I close?

Is the Super Cup the one that is played annually pre-season between Aberdeen and Loch Lomand institute for the Blind XI?

I heard it went to extra time a penalties last year and that Aberdeen were only victorious because there were people in the crowd who starting ringing tiny bells so that the Loch Lomond team couldn't locate the ball on the penalty spot.............

Pretty much bang on.

Everton & Man City would take longest because they've only won one, and they aren't in Europe this season.
