Title: Security Software Post by: snoopy1239 on July 06, 2006, 06:44:34 PM I used to use Norton, but I find it a right pain in the bummy.
Can anyone reccommend any good alternatives? Title: Re: Security Software Post by: Claw75 on July 06, 2006, 06:51:11 PM this thread might help Snoops:

To be perfectly honest though the best security you can have is a decent router and common sense. Do not download anything from the internet when offered it, do not open email attachments if you have not asked for them and use a router, I seriously doubt anyone following that advice would ever get a virus, and the router will protect you from worms and random hack attacks. Zonealarm personal firewall does an ok job as a firewall its not great but if you want one use it. Spybot Search and Destroy is free and kills spyware and popup crap ( google it - its free ). Title: Re: Security Software Post by: Bongo on July 06, 2006, 07:48:08 PM I'd grab NOD32 for antivirus, good price and great product.
Firewall wise I'd say you want a software firewall aswell as a the protection offered by a router (if you have one). The software firewall will provide you some protection against anything malicious trying to get out (a router won't) and will protect you from things inside your router - e.g. housemate or family member's PC getting a worm. I currently use the free version of Zonealarm but plan on trying out Ghostwall when I get some time - I've had several good reports about it. Spyware wise you probably want to use several products as they all seem to offer varying things and none of them are perfect. The last time I saw figures from any sort of test on this most of the products missed most of the malware (with Giant Antispyware (now bought out by MS) being the only one sorting over 50% (63%). Spybot got 33%. Title: Re: Security Software Post by: tikay on July 06, 2006, 08:27:21 PM I'd grab NOD32 for antivirus, good price and great product. Spyware remover :- Spyware Doctor, Ewido, Spybot, Adaware Pro se 1.06. Firewall :- Sygate, Mcafee. The latest version of Zone Alarm free firewall has some compatibility issues with Adaware and Spybot. It won't be great when they disable it. Very true. I un-installed my Mcafee firewall and tried Zone Alarm instead. But the compatibility issues were doing my head in. I also tried Ghostwall - but it was just too complicated and it also never prompt me to accept outgoing connections ::) Does anyone know of another decent firewall software? Title: Re: Security Software Post by: ifm on July 06, 2006, 11:58:59 PM I am using ghostwall at the mo', i'll let you guys know what i think after a bit of time (not even sure that it's working!!, it is supposed to be very discreet though :D).
I had to get something else as Zonealarm went tits up on me after the latest upgrade, i couldn't undo the upgrade. Anti virus i run Avast alongside AVG, overkill? Title: Re: Security Software Post by: ifm on July 07, 2006, 04:43:40 AM Just ran my puter thru some online scanners/probers and it passed with flying colours!!
In fact some of the tests couldn't even take place because ghostwall wouldn't allow then to obtain the IP address. impressed so far, especially as it doesn't even appear to do anything and it uses a tiny, tiny amount of system memory. Title: Re: Security Software Post by: Graham C on July 07, 2006, 08:55:54 AM For a firewall, I uss Sygate Personal Firewall but I'm not sure you can get it for free anymore. I'll have a look.
edit: It's not, they got bought out by Symantic and it's no longer available. ZA seems to be the freebie of choice at the moment. Title: Re: Security Software Post by: snoopy1239 on July 07, 2006, 07:48:29 PM Hi
Thanks for the advice I decided to give NOD32 a bash. I already have adaware, so I don't really need much else for spyware and whatnot, I just wanted something to replace the increasingly annoying Norton I was using. Anyhow, I've downloaded the free trial, and installed the software onto my hard drive. I'm not particularly computer savvy, so is there anything else I need to do, or is it all up and running now? Title: Re: Security Software Post by: Bongo on July 07, 2006, 08:10:35 PM Make sure it downloads the latest virus definitions (and carries on doing so).
I'm not sure how the trial works but AV without the latest updates is pretty useless. After it's installed you can pretty much leave it be, it will just sit there, update itself and do it's job. I already have adaware, so I don't really need much else for spyware and whatnot, You should also install spyware doctor, as adaware hardly finds anything - apart from the microgaming malware that all others fail to find ;) Title: Re: Security Software Post by: Bongo on July 08, 2006, 12:46:59 AM Is it still the case that it finds all microgaming sites as malware?
It used to find ladbrokes on mine, which I thought was odd. My research found out that some company had used some software to autoinstall their casino software, which was microgaming software onto PCs without asking permission etc So in that case it was erroneously finding them as malware ;) Title: Re: Security Software Post by: I, Zimbra on July 08, 2006, 01:31:20 AM I have my Adaware set to 'ignore' the Microgaming "malware".
