The way I see it is if it's important they will have my mobile number or the nous to leave a message on my home phone. I hardly ever answer withheld numbers nowadays, if after I have said hello they dont speak back immediately, I hang up. I'm contemplating putting a block on withheld numbers on my home number, all of my famliy know how to get around the block if they need to speak to me. Cold calling bugs the sh*t outta me. They just get a list of Orange numbers and then call each one, asking the person if they're coming to the end of their contract and offering them a deal. There's no pre-checking to see if you are of any use to them. I even kept getting phoned up by the company that I was actually signed up with, asking if I was nearing the end of my contract.

Eventually I got quite annoyed that they kept ringing me dispite the fact i had informed them several times I had no idea who they were looking for. So when they next rang and asked me the usual set of questions I told them he'd moved to Madrid. They thanked me and never rang again :D
The TPS does seem to work quite well, the volume of calls significantly reduced after we registered. What if her company made money from sending employees round to ring your doorbell? What if there were many companies in this business? What if you had to keep answering the door to these people? 'I'm not interested, thank you' doesn't really cut it for me after the umpteenth time it's happened. You can't take your frustration out on the companies themselves - the foot soldiers have to bear the brunt. Maybe one day, after every employee has quit from the abuse they get from customers, we'll be pestered no more. If you register with the TPS and tell any company that does phone that you have done so and to remove any contact details they have for you, then they are legally required to stop. However if you are still receiving such calls (or it is not possible to ask the company to stop sending these types of messages - eg text messages) you can complain directly to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). They are the government body responsible for enforcing the regulations. Their website is www.ico.gov.uk (http://www.ico.gov.uk) or phone helpline on 01625 545745. This was paraphrased from the TPS website, it only really applies when it is the same company repeatedly ringing (as opposed to several companies independently doing so), but the only way to stop them is to go through with a complaint at the end.
